LAS VEGAS - A girl was found "safe and well" after authorities released images of her from a videotape that also showed a man performing explicit sex acts on a younger girl.

The girl who was found, who detectives earlier said they believed was 10 to 12 years old, was not sexually abused and "never suffered as a victim at the hands of the perpetrator as the first girl has," Nye County Sheriff's Detective David Boruchowitz said.

The part of the video showing the older girl was shot in Nye County, a rural county near Las Vegas, Boruchowitz said. Details were not disclosed, and no additional information about the identity of the girl or the circumstances of how she came to be on the video was made public.

But Boruchowitz said investigators feared the younger girl was in danger. Sheriff's detectives were also seeking a man whose image was seen on the video.

Boruchowitz earlier characterized a segment of the tape showing the older girl as "some kind of peep show" filmed from a different room. Investigators were examining whether parts of the tape showing the younger girl were filmed with the same video camera, he said.

A 26-year-old Pahrump man, Darren Tuck, surrendered the tape to Nye County sheriff's investigators Sept. 8 after another man reported seeing it, Boruchowitz said. Tuck was later arrested on charges of promoting child pornography and possession of child pornography, both felonies, and released without bail pending an appearance Nov. 26 in Pahrump Justice Court. The top charge carries a possible sentence of up to life in prison.

Tuck told detectives he found the videotape in the desert outside Pahrump more than five months ago. Boruchowitz said investigators don't think Tuck made the tape.

Pahrump is a small town 60 miles west of Las Vegas.

The Associated Press generally does not identify or release photos of suspected victims of sexual abuse but is doing so in this case in the interest of the girl's safe recovery.

I hope they find the girl on the tape and arrest the guy on the tape. I know I shouldn't hate child molestors but I hate how they use children for their sick pleasure. That poor girl I hope they find her alive.

Its OK to HATE people like this! Your GOD will forgive you, for I'm sure "he" hates child molesters as much as "we" do.

I agree with dv8grl your God will forgive you, I'm sorry and God forgive me but I'd like to see all child molesters tortured for eternity. What their victims have to endure for the rest of their lives no court can give them justice.

Sex suspect described as survivalist
By KEN RITTER, Associated Press Writer

LAS VEGAS - The fugitive accused of raping a little girl on videotape was portrayed Monday as a dangerous, knife-wielding survivalist who once vowed never to be taken alive and formerly worked as an animal trainer with Las Vegas illusionists Siegfried & Roy.

The FBI and Las Vegas police pressed a nationwide manhunt for Chester "Chet" Arthur Stiles, 37, who authorities say can be seen molesting a 3-year-old girl in a mysterious video that was recorded four years ago and surfaced last month. "He's a survivalist type who isn't bothered by living without electricity or water, and always carries a fighting-type knife," said Nye County District Attorney Bob Beckett.

Investigators were interviewing people who know Stiles and pursuing hundreds of "very fruitful" leads Monday from across the country, said police Capt. Vincent Cannito, head of the department's youth and family crimes unit. "He does have a very violent past," Cannito said, "and he has a history of narcotics usage, so we do consider him to be a very dangerous individual."

Authorities were seeking Stiles on an unrelated warrant issued last year charging him with fleeing to avoid prosecution on allegations he groped a 6-year-old girl in 2003.

Las Vegas police say Stiles had a string of arrests dating to 1999 on several charges, including assault, battery, resisting a police officer, auto theft, leaving the scene of an accident and contempt of court. He was convicted in 1999 in Las Vegas of carrying a concealed weapon, and in 2001 of conspiracy to commit grand larceny, according to court records. Stiles also pleaded no contest in Houston in 1993 to unlawful carrying of a weapon.

The district attorney said Stiles vowed in the past not to be taken alive by police. Beckett said Stiles has claimed to be a former Navy SEAL and a black belt in karate, and claimed to own several guns, including a rifle, shotgun and pistol. But the district attorney said he could not confirm any of that.

Beckett said he got the information from a Las Vegas lawyer representing a person who knows and fears Stiles. Beckett would not reveal their names.

However, a spokesman for magicians Siegfried Fischbacher and Roy Horn said Stiles worked as part of an animal training team for Siegfried & Roy for a few months in 2002 at the Mirage hotel-casino in Las Vegas. "He helped taking care of the animals, and he was let go when he didn't show up to work one day," spokesman Dave Kirvin said, adding that Stiles left little impression on the dozens of other animal trainers.

As for whether he served in the Navy, records suggest he lived in 1989 at a Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center in Panama City, Fla. But the Navy and a clerk at a military locator office in St. Louis could not immediately confirm he was in the military.

Tina Allen, a former girlfriend, told ABC's "Good Morning America" on Monday that she initially trusted Stiles around children, including her own grandson. "I know him to be very violent, and he's not going down without a fight," Allen said.

Allen told CNN's "Larry King Live" on Monday night that she worried Stiles might emerge from hiding to harm her and said she would seek the protection of Las Vegas police on Tuesday.

The video came to light last month after a man claimed to have found the tape in the desert. But authorities said the man, Darrin Tuck, 26, had it for as long as five months and showed it to others before turning it in. Beckett said Monday he planned to file pornography charges against Tuck.

Authorities last week took the unusual step of releasing images from the tape and identifying Stiles in an attempt to establish the identity of the victim. With help from the media and the public, sheriff's deputies found the girl, now 7, safe in Las Vegas, where they said the video was made.

The Associated Press is no longer identifying or releasing photos of the girl because she is a suspected victim of sexual abuse. It did so earlier in the interest of her safe recovery.

Fugitive accused of raping child caught
By KEN RITTER, Associated Press Writer
Tue Oct 16, 10:44 AM ET

LAS VEGAS - A fugitive accused in the videotaped molestation of a 3-year-old girl was arrested quietly during a traffic stop, telling the officer, "I'm tired of running," police said.

Chester "Chet" Arthur Stiles, 37, was scheduled for a hearing Wednesday. He was pulled over late Monday in Henderson for not having a license plate and admitted his identity after police said his license looked suspicious, authorities said.

"This is an answer to our prayers, actually," Nye County Sheriff Tony DeMeo said. "He should be off the street. In our opinion, he is a predator."

Stiles had been wanted since Oct. 5 on warrants issued for 21 felony charges in connection with the acts seen on the videotape. The charges include lewdness with a minor, sexual assault and attempted sexual assault, Las Vegas police Capt. Vincent Cannito said.

The videotape, found in the rural Nevada town of Pahrump last month, had prompted an equally intense search for the young girl who appeared in it. Police with little to go on had encouraged news organizations to broadcast her haunting image. When the now-7-year-old was found on Sept. 28, authorities shifted their resources to finding Stiles.

Henderson police Officer Mike Dye said he stopped Stiles at about 7 p.m. on a busy thoroughfare just outside Las Vegas driving a white sedan with no license plates. "He said, 'I'm Chester Stiles, the guy you're looking for,'" Dye said. "He said, 'I'm tired of running.'"

Stiles, who had been portrayed by authorities as a dangerous, knife-wielding survivalist, provided an expired California drivers license with a photo that Dye said looked "suspicious."

"The picture on the license didn't quite match the gentleman in the vehicle," Dye said.

After further questioning, the officer said Stiles revealed his true name. Dye said Stiles cooperated and didn't resist. Dye called for backup and another officer arrived to handcuff Stiles.

Stiles was booked at the Clark County jail. He had not yet hired a lawyer, police said.

Stiles was already wanted on state and federal warrants in a case alleging he groped a 6-year-old girl in 2003. Police had received hundreds of tips on Stiles, who they believed might be dangerous and possibly armed based on earlier arrests.

Elaine Thomas, who said she was an ex-girlfriend of Stiles, called authorities when his picture appeared on the news, she told ABC's "Good Morning America" on Tuesday. His truck had been in her driveway until this past weekend, when authorities picked it up, she said.

She said she never imagined he was capable of the acts on the tape. "As far as I knew, he was interested in older, heavyset women because that was the line of women he dated, up to and including myself," she said. "You don't imagine someone going from dating older, heavyset women to doing something that horrid to a child."

Stiles' previous arrests included charges of assault, battery, resisting a police officer, auto theft, leaving the scene of an accident and contempt of court, authorities said.

He was convicted in 1999 in Las Vegas of carrying a concealed weapon, and in 2001 of conspiracy to commit grand larceny. Police were also looking into an allegation that he had sexually assaulted a young girl in 2001.

Nye County District Attorney Bob Beckett had said he was told Stiles was a "survivalist type" who always carried knife and claimed to have had a Navy SEAL background.

The man who turned in the videotape, Darrin Tuck, 26, remains in custody after appearing Monday in a Pahrump court on a probation violation charge. He is due to appear next Monday on a felony pornography possession charge, his lawyer said.

Tuck told Nye County sheriff's investigators he found the tape beneath a fallen sign in the desert. DeMeo alleged that Tuck kept the video for several months and showed it to other people before turning it over to detectives.

"We're hoping that Stiles cooperates with police and this will illuminate what we've been saying from the beginning," said Tuck's lawyer, Chris Rasmussen. "Mr. Tuck had no involvement with Mr. Stiles."

[Suspect in taped attack arraigned
By KEN RITTER, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 27 minutes ago

LAS VEGAS - The man accused of abusing a 3-year-old girl in an explicit sex videotape was arraigned Wednesday on 23 felony charges that could land him in prison for life.

Chester Arthur Stiles, 37, did not enter pleas during the two-minute hearing in Las Vegas Justice Court.

He waived a reading of the charges and spoke briefly to confirm that he could not afford a lawyer. The charges include 10 counts of lewdness with a child under 14, 11 counts of sexual assault of a child under 14, and one count each of attempted sexual assault with a minor under 14 and use of a minor in producing pornography. Three charges date back to the alleged molestation of a 6-year-old girl in December 2003.

Stiles was arrested Monday during a traffic stop in Henderson, southeast of Las Vegas. He had been the subject of a massive manhunt after authorities released images of him from the video.

Stiles stood wearing blue jail scrubs, his eyes downcast and with unkempt hair over his forehead. He was surrounded by six armed and uniformed court officers.

His fists shackled at his side to a chain belt, Stiles said "No ma'am," when asked if he could afford a lawyer.

Justice of the Peace Deborah Lippis appointed Deputy Public Defender Jeff Banks to represent Stiles.

Outside court, Banks characterized Stiles as "down in the mouth" but said he expected he would fight the charges at future hearings.

"Of course he's going to plead not guilty," Banks told reporters.

Court administrator Chuck Short said Stiles had received death threats, so security was tightened for Stiles and his lawyer.

No bail was set, but Banks said he might seek bail later.

Stiles faces multiple terms of life in prison if convicted.

The U.S. attorney has also unsealed a grand jury indictment of a federal charge of producing child pornography, which could carry a sentence of 15 to 30 years in federal prison. Officials said Stiles will be tried on state charges first.

In the video, Stiles is shown committing a variety of sexual acts on the young girl while addressing her by name and repositioning the camera himself, according to a police report.

The girl's mother chose not to watch the video, but told police that she recognized striped sheets, her daughter's favorite leopard-print dress at the time and the knob-less wooden armoire in an apartment they moved from before the girl's third birthday in September 2003.

"She removed the knobs because (the girl) would put them in her mouth," the report states.

On Tuesday, the mother's lawyer, Jerry Donohue, said the girl, now a 7-year-old second-grader, "clearly has no memory of any molestation, which is good." But he said she has been interviewed by medical professionals and police, and "she knows something's going on around her."

The girl assaulted in the video was found safe Sept. 28 with her mother in Las Vegas after sheriff's detectives in neighboring Nye County circulated her photo to the media and asked for help finding her.

Police are still searching for other possible victims and accomplices.

Nye County Sheriff Tony DeMeo alleged that Tuck kept the video for several months and showed it to other people before turning it over to detectives.

"We're hoping that Stiles cooperates with police and this will illuminate what we've been saying from the beginning," said Tuck's lawyer, Chris Rasmussen. "Mr. Tuck had no involvement with Mr. Stiles."

I'm really glad she doesn't remember because something like that can really mess a child up. I hope he gets the maximum thay can give him and has to serve it all. I wish there was a way to treat pedophiles pschologically where maybe they can find out why they do this and maybe be able to stop. But I really don't think they can or will change.

LAS VEGAS — A man who was tracked down after a video of him sexually assaulting a 2-year-old girl was found in the Nevada desert was convicted Tuesday of that attack and another on a 6-year-old.

Chester Arthur Stiles remained sitting, showed no emotion and stared straight ahead as guilty verdicts were read against him for 22 felonies, including sexual assault.

He faces multiple life prison terms at sentencing, which was set for May 8.

"This guy is sick," juror Jeffrey Taube, 34, said later.

Nineteen of the charges stemmed from acts Stiles videotaped of himself with the 2-year-old sometime from April to August 2003. The jury somberly viewed the graphic homemade VHS tape late Friday in a hushed courtroom where the judge excluded the public but allowed five news reporters to remain.

Outside the presence of the jury, Clark County District Court Judge Jennifer Togliatti called the recorded images "clearly child pornography in its most graphic form."

A man gave the tape to authorities in September 2007, five months after he found it hidden in a desert lot about 60 miles west of Las Vegas. That man later pleaded guilty to conspiracy to obstruct a public officer for the delay in turning in the video.

With clear evidence of a sex crime on a toddler but neither the victim nor the abuser identified, investigators released images from the video in a nationwide hunt for both people.

Stiles, 38, of Las Vegas, was arrested in October 2007 after he was identified as the man on the video and a fugitive in a case involving a 6-year-old girl. Prosecutors said he molested the older child in late 2003.

The jury of nine men and three women deliberated about four hours after hearing 16 prosecution witnesses testify over six days.

Stiles' defense lawyers called no witnesses, and Stiles chose not to testify.

The child who was molested when she was 2 is now 8. Her mother testified she has no recollection of the encounter, which occurred when she lived with a friend's family in an apartment in Las Vegas. The friend's mother was Stiles' girlfriend.

Stiles was convicted of 10 counts of lewdness with a child under the age of 14, 11 counts of sexual assault with a minor under 14, and one count of attempted sexual assault with a minor under 14.

Deputy public defender Stacey Roundtree asked jurors to focus on shortcomings in the prosecution evidence and inconsistencies in witness testimony.

"There is no medical evidence of sexual abuse in this case. There is no DNA evidence," Roundtree said during closings. She added that authorities acknowledged that the videotape turned in to authorities was a copy, not an original recording.

"It could have been manipulated," Roundtree insisted.

Three charges stemmed from allegations that Stiles molested the 6-year-old while he and his girlfriend spent two nights as guests at the girl's Las Vegas home in December 2003.

That encounter was not videotaped. But the girl, now 11 and living in Washington state, testified that she awoke before dawn one morning with Stiles kneeling next to her bed and fondling her.

The names of the girls are being withheld because The Associated Press usually does not identify victims of sexual abuse.

Prosecutor Jim Sweetin said the girls were "incapable of resisting or understanding the nature of the conduct."

Clark County District Attorney David Roger said Stiles was never offered a plea deal before trial, which he acknowledged was difficult for witnesses, families and jurors because of the nature of the offenses and the age of the victims.

"It's important for parents to open their eyes widely and be aware there are child predators out there looking for young victims," Roger said.

Roundtree said Stiles was "a man full of sorrow and sometimes anger" as she tried to soften the "inflammatory" way she said he was portrayed by prosecutors.

"Nothing we can say will erase the images of the video you saw last week," she told the jury, but added, "You have no way of knowing what Mr. Stiles meant when he said, 'I'm a monster."'

She referred to a letter in which Stiles recounted his own sexual abuse as a child, apologized for his actions and appeared to acknowledge what was on the videotape.

"What I've done there's no making up for," said one letter Stiles addressed to four former girlfriends. "Somehow being abused made my conscience a smaller voice than it should have been. I'm a monster.

"Please! Please let all guilt die with me. Chester."

Roundtree and Deputy Public Defender Amy Coffee said after the verdict they will appeal the judge's decisions to let prosecutors show the video, air jailhouse telephone recordings and read Stiles' personal letters to the jury.

Stiles also faces federal charges of producing child pornography, which could carry a sentence of 15 to 30 years in federal prison. That trial is set for April 6 in Las Vegas.

In LA they can consider the death penalty for child molestation if the child is under age 12. It is cases like this that make it appropriate.
