.. i had the hardest time deciding between 4 different stocks ranging in price from $17 - $8
.. its so easy to invest nowadays with sites such as sharebuilder (thats what i use) -
i ended up buying 13 shares of advanced micro devices (AMS) this morning for $12.89 a share, it closed today @ $13.30, but with all stocks I know the risk and this is definately a long term investment, which all investments should be.

Congrats on taking the plunge and buying some more stock.
What were the other 3 you were thinking about?

I was thinking about Take Two Interactive (TTWO) they are a video game maker, they make those horrible but profitable Grand Theft Auto & the like.
Also, FLEXTRONICS (FLEX) they are the company behind TESLA MOTORS
and Mitsubishi (MTU) because they are working with FLEX.,.. which is also the reason I bought AMD.

Its so cheap to invest., when you think about the long term. I just had the extra money this time from that contest win. Whenver I get some extra dough, I buy stock.

I would really like to invest in a hearing aid company, the only one I know if is thru PHILLIPS, which shares are way too much for me @ this point. Hearing Aids long term investment is great with all the ipods & cell phones by the time my generation is in there 50s they'll all be deaf & I'll be RICH! lol ! ~

Which plan are you on at Sharebuilder? I went to thier site after reading you post. I use Ameritrade.

I have heard of all of the stocks you mentioned but I don't own any of them.

These are the bigger names in my portfolio right now.
Safeway - SWY
eBay - EBAY
GE- GE

Is your portfolio diversified and have you thought about ETFs?

I'm pretty diversified when it comes to Dhs 401k & IRAs n' such.. i just buy stocks for fun.
I did well a few yrs back with ZOLL Medical, buying @ $32 a share & sold @ $68 a share.
Right now I own both XM & Sirius stock, so I'm still waiting out to hear about the merge n' such., I bought XM when we got XM for the car yrs ago now and i bought Sirius when I heard they were trying to get some kind of live tv gimmick in vehicles, which i thought was great, so I bought stock. Right now you can get Sirius stock for under $4 a share.

I'm not too familiar with AMERITRADE, i like sharebuilder because its only $16 to buy & i think like $16 to sell., I've only sold once & that was the ZOLL . I'm so random when I buy that I'm not on any kind of plan. Plus, when I signed up thru sharebuilder & use the entertainment book code, they give you $35 in a money market acct for free when you make ur first buy/trade.

Congrats on Zoll.
I am also diversified in my 401k and IRAs. I have about 9 choices in my 401k. I wish there were a few more.
I only pay $9.99 per trade (in or out) at Ameritrade.

I'll have to check that out for sure the next time I buy., are you on any kind of plan, or is that just the standard trade rates?

I have been using Ameritrade (now TD Ameritrade) for about 10 years now.
They don't have plans like Sharebuilder. They charge $9.99 per trade no matter how many shares you buy. $9.99 to buy and $9.99 to sell.
They do have special sign ups when you open an account. Right now if you open an account with at least $2000 you get to trade FREE for 45 days.

It's good to invest... but, stocks right now are so iffy. Our 401-K options have taken a real beating. I personally like gauranteed funds, they don't have the potential to earn as much, but, they're safe... at least we have got some interest from them.

Our old accountant has got me to thinking about some kind of bond... I can't remember exactly what they are called, but, they are guaranteed, and more than double in value over like 10 years... which is almost unheard of...something to think about.

Good luck with it !

I've been wanting to invest for years. I have no clue what stocks to follow before I even invest. Any info for a newbie on stock buying and selling? I might go check out Ameritrade.

Just look at what you buy, if there is a product you like, check out how much shares are and just buy what you can afford, even if its 5 shares, its better than no shares.

You can invest in just about any company from casinos to fast food, to automobiles, phone companies anything & everything just about.
Think about the future - what is becoming big now .. thats why i'm into Tesla Motors and think that investing in them or companies that work with them is the best long term investment for me.
