Man with AK-47 assault rifle arrested after leaving Dearborn's Hemlock Park
September 12, 2007
DEARBORN - Houssein Zorkot, a 26-year-old Dearborn resident, was arraigned Tuesday in 19th District Court on multiple felony charges, including carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent — a five-year felony.
Zorkot, a third-year medical student at Wayne State University, was allegedly armed with an AK-47 assault rifle and dressed in black clothing with camouflage paint covering his face when he was arrested Saturday in Hemlock Park.
According to police, Zorkot was observed attempting to leave the park in a black SUV after officers had received reports of a man carrying a rifle in the area. He was placed under arrest and is scheduled to undergo a preliminary examination at 9 a.m. Sept. 21 in 19th District Court.
Zorkot has also been charged with one count of possession of a loaded firearm in a motor vehicle and one count of felony firearm. He remains in custody on a $1 million bond (cash, no 10 percent).

It doesn’t look like this was a med school homework assignment. Robert Spencer snarks: “Maybe he was hunting squirrels.” Heh. http://www.jihadwatch.org/archives/018127.php

Zorkot is quite open and vocal about his militant, pro-Hezbollah views. Here’s his website. He’s a kickboxer, weightlifter, and zealous Nasrallah fan boy.

Do you think our consular officials asked him about any of this before approving his visa???
This statement says it all:

Wondering what homeland security officials are doing to track foreign student visa holders, especially Muslim student doctors with a soft spot for jihad? DHS Secretary Michael Chertoff has a new blog with comments. (hat tip - Allah) Why not ask him? http://www.dhs.gov/journal/leadership/
It seems rather clear that a medical student who is loyal to Hezbollah set out to commit terrorist acts against Americans in the days leading up to September 11. How odd that so far, at least, this hasn't become a major news story.

Outrage of the Day
Mon, Sep 17, 2007 at 11:31:33 am PST
Officials in Dearborn deliberately withheld information about Hussein Zorkot, arrested with a loaded AK-47 and camouflage paint—because they were afraid of “stirring anti-Muslim sentiments” and “fanning the flames of terrorism.”
This is bad craziness.
Hussein Zorkot is an open supporter of Hizballah. His web site has jihad music with sounds of explosions, pictures of Hizballah leader Hassan Nasrallah, and an image declaring the “start of my personal jihad,” dated September 8, 2007.
And the government of Dearborn hid this information from the public, at a time when the US was supposed to be on high alert for terrorist incidents, because they don’t trust the people who elected them. And because they’re afraid of stirring up more terrorism.
Really bad craziness.

9-11 anniversary delayed info
September 16, 2007
On Tuesday, a nation honored those whose lives were lost during the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001. But four days prior to the anniversary of the deadly terrorist attacks, a Wayne State medical student had city officials hoping that the event would not be marred by more bloodshed.
Houssein Zorkot, 26, was arrested Sept. 8 after he was observed wielding an AK-47 semi-automatic assault rifle in Hemlock Park, a popular destination for many Dearborn residents.
Zorkot, who is of Lebanese descent, was arraigned Tuesday in 19th District Court — the same day city officials sent out a press release about an event that had happened four days prior, and one day after the Press & Guide had contacted city officials seeking comment.
According to Dearborn Mayor "Jack" O"Reilly, Jr., the release of information about the case was delayed until after Zarkot's arraignment and late in the day that marked the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. City officials feared that announcing the arrest of an armed Arabic man so close to anniversary of the attack would stir anti-Muslim sentiments and fan the flames of terrorism.
"We didn't want this to become more than it is," O'Reilly said. "There are certain things that the media latches onto, and this would have turned into a story about terrorism. That's not the kind of tone we want to set."
Zorkot has not been identified as a terrorist and has yet to be associated with any terrorist group, O'Reilly said. He has been charged with multiple felonies for carrying a dangerous weapon.

And there’s a bigger picture here.
Can you spell politically correct pay-offs?

The dream of American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee- (ADC) Regional Director Imad Hamad for an American-Arab Center for Civil and Human Rights (ACCHR) took on a much more visible form Wednesday.
Well-wishers gathered at the future site of the facility on Chase between Ford Road and Warren Avenue to recognize the many people involved in bringing it to this point — the planners, the backers, the encouragers and those involved who assisted in surmounting paperwork hurdles.
Announced last month, the two-story, 20,000-square-foot facility will be the first of its kind in the world, according to Hamad. He said the $5 million facility is being created in the name of the common good and will be an education and resource center on civil and human rights. Work is expected to start in about two months and it should be completed late next year. “It will complement the many good programs already existing in Dearborn,” Hamad said. “It is to serve the community and emphasize the true American values.”
Former U.S. Congresswoman Mary Rose Okar — president of the national ADC committee — said the work of those at the center will protect the rights of all Americans. “We serve everybody,” Okar said. “When you protect the rights of your own, you protect the rights of everyone.” She said the Dearborn ADC office is the largest regional office for the group in the country.
Mayor Jack O’Reilly was on hand to welcome what he called a new community asset and pledged support for its growth. He joked that the experience of getting the permits and plan approvals through the city’s Department of Building and Safety had taught Hamad a new sense of patience.
Wayne County Chief Executive Robert Ficano welcomed the center “to the most diverse county in America.” Noting that American democracy is just 200 years old and a work in progress, he said the work of the center would help “protect our freedoms, our people and our democracy.”
But a major part of the program was to thank the prime minister and wife of the emir of Qatar who donated $1.5 million to the project.
