I came across this on youtube and felt so sorry for the woman. She just had surgery for breast cancer, and will probably lose her house. She seems to be alone (except for neighbors and friends), and this is the last little piece of her life from before she had cancer. I sent her a little bit, along with my best wishes and prayers, and she e-mailed me a very nice note. Perhaps some of you can help this poor woman. Even if you can't send money; a note, prayers, something will help. At least she'll know that somebody cares! I feel that this woman is truly sincere, and I would hate to be in her position. This is one case where it is truly better to be in the position to give than to receive!

Tears came to my eyes when I reached the end of her video. She looks so much like my sister-in-law who has also been battling cancer. I hope she gets the help she needs.

Edit: I also received an e-mail from Wendy, and very quickly after I sent her something. She seems like a wonderful person needing help.

That was a wonderful video and thank you for posting. I am dealing with my mothers breast cancer right now and I know times do get tough. Since mom lives with us now we have done all we can to cut corners ourselves. We are trying to sell our motorcycle, car, and anything else we can. If we get back on our feet so I would certainly love to help save Wendy's house. I have added her to our prayer list at church.

I also have a Mother who is a breast cancer survivor and I emailed Wendy. I believe she is genuine. This is the email she sent me back:

Hi Tami,

I appreciate your email more than you know. But I certainly don't want you to take money away from your own family. God bless you and your husband and your girls and your mother. Please hold on to your money though -- just the thoughts you sent filled my heart.

Wendy

I'm so glad you're all being so nice to her; I should have posted here earlier! Let's try to spread the word! Putting her on your prayer list, or telling your church about her is an excellent idea. If we can get more people to see her video, maybe we really CAN help her save her house.

If you read the notes under the video, 300 people had viewed her video by last week, and she had received $170. If we can multiply the number of people by 10, that might be a good start! And now some of you have sent something, so that must be encouraging. I'm going to try to link other places to her.

I must admit, I was a little sceptical, until the end of the video, where she has neighbors and friends vouche for her. And now, for some reason, I just can't stand to think of her in this situation. (Crystal 19, your mother is lucky to have you there for he!) I'm sure this woman realizes a lot of people are struggling these days, and is grateful for any help or emotional support she can get. I hope she gets everything she needs and beats the cancer!

Breast Cancer Survivor Vows to Save Her Home
06.26.07, 9:33 AM ET

After nine months of chemotherapy, seven weeks of radiation, a lumpectomy, a mastectomy, and removal of her lymph nodes, Wendy Lester thought she had been through the worst of her two breast cancer diagnosis.

But she was wrong.

Instead, faced with insurance co-pays and mounting debts she had accumulated while being out of work almost two years, Lester, a single, 53-year-old South Florida resident, was recently advised by an attorney to let her home fall into foreclosure and declare bankruptcy.

"I just wasn't willing to let breast cancer force me to give up another piece of my life," she commented. "I decided to look for a solution."

What Lester decided to do was mount a multi-faceted campaign to raise the money she needs to save her home. She made a movie and put it on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLPW0S_wUA0), created a direct marketing campaign asking people to donate money to her cause, began contacting New York book publishers to see if they might be interested in a book she is writing about her breast cancer experience, and planned to contact her lenders, SunTrust and Countrywide, to see if they could help. She even applied to be on the TV show Deal or No Deal.

"When you have cancer, you're forced to deal with treatments and issues that turn your life upside down. You have to fight to remember who you really are," Lester says. "It's what Michael Moore's new movie, Sicko, talks about. There are no safety nets for people who become sick."

Lester estimates that she needs to quickly raise about $50,000 to stave off foreclosure and bankruptcy. And she has promised to donate 10% of whatever she raises to Women Beyond Cancer, a non-profit organization serving the emotional, physical, and spiritual needs of women with any type of cancer.

The fact that Lester owes more on her 2/1 home than it's now worth is a mounting problem across the country. Just last week, real estate data firm RealtyTrac announced that home foreclosures in May jumped 90 percent from a year earlier, reflecting a poor spring housing market and foreshadowing even higher levels later in 2007.

Will Lester's plan work? Because her campaign is just beginning, the jury is still out. But for now, she is hoping that people will send $1, $5, $10, $20 or whatever they can afford to Wendy at PO Box 4812, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, 33338, or at PayPal at SaveWendysHouse@aol.com.

Lester has one more operation scheduled for June 29th at Mt. Sinai Hospital on Miami Beach.

"I'm a good and honest person who would help someone else if they needed it," Lester states. "I can only hope and pray that other people feel the same."

What she needs is for some multimillionaire to hear her story and have compassion for her. :( I would guess the majority of people who post here are people who live paycheck to paycheck, and based on posts I've read, often wonder where their own money to keep their head above water is going to come from.

The idea of everyone sending a few dollars is nice, but I'm afraid it just won't be enough. :(

I submitted her, maybe if enough people do it will happen, I know she didn't waste her money, but maybe they will see it, and they will help.

Lasher, you are a saint! I'm so pleased that you and everyone else here is so interested in helping her. I just submitted her story to Michael Moore, because part of the reason she is so in debt is due to her co-pays for her medical treatment, which is what his move, Sicko, is about. But now I will forward the link you gave that shows she's not a scam. Thank you, everyone!

It's just good karma, alot of people have helped me, some who didn't know me that well, I wouldn't have made it without them, just keeping the circle going.

Good karma is where it's at, and you've got it!

I just want you all to know how sweet you are. I posted about this on another board, and you should see how nasty and suspicious the people were. I can understand if they don't trust her (but now, thanks to Lasher, I've posted the 2 news stories to the board), but they were making horrible, sarcastic comments, saying she shouldn't be spending the money on an internet connection, etc.

Anyway, I just want you to know that I dropped her a note at youtube.com and gave her the link to this thread. I don't know if she'll post here, but I thought it might make her feel better to see such a nice group of people!
