Well, I went to a psychiatrist today to tell her that my prozac has pooped out and guess what she told me? I'm depressed!! Well , duh! She did give me a different anti depressant which is what I wanted. I just hope it works.
For 40 years we have lived with the diagnoses of my now deceased mom that she was schizophrenic and in less that 30 min this dr changed her diagnoses from schizophrenia to manic depressive. I am impressed with how intelligent these people are. I just didn't know what to make of that.

I don't really trust the diagnoses of someone that hasn't even talked too a person and yet they know whats wrong with them. My husbands job had a psychologist diagnose my husband as someone who couldn't handle problem solving and he didn't talk to my husband just based his diagnosis on a few questions on a piece of paper. He definitely doesn't know my husband he doesn't like problems of course but he does like finding ways to solve them. He is usually one of the people at work that other people turn too, to solve problems. But that psycologists diagnosis could keep my husband from getting promotions.

I think they are trained to diagnose too fast and too negatively.
I told a psychiatrist my hubby is the first one to get places in traffic. He said oh he drives radically. WELL NO, he knows how to position himself in traffic to get places and not be stopped in traffic tangles. He learned how to drive in LA. You have to know how to get somewhere when you live there. To me that is a positive not a negative.
OH PLEASE!!! He does not get any tickets or cut anyone off. He is a good driver, not an idiot. OK?????

Perhaps they are right. They see the extremes all the time and can spot things faster. Bugle , I wish and pray for you the best.

Not slamming you, but i don't feel that way. i went to one years ago.
And they just want to put you on pills and get you out of the office as quick as possible. I don't feel they really listen either!
My cousin was addicted to pain meds etc and was depressed and was going to a shrink and they put her on 3 more meds and she overdosed 2 weeks ago and died!! Why in the world would you put a addict on more pills:mad:

I know a person who was suffering from anxiety attacks and went to her primary family doctor. She wasn't available but her associate was. This associate looked at her record and stated that she was bipolar ..................... because people from Italian backgrounds are highly prone to being bipolar! She looked at him as if he was nuts and told him that she wouldn't judge all Chinese doctors as idiots just because he was one! Needless to say she changed doctors.

unfortunatly psychiatrists and pyscholgists are the most screwed up people. They are just book smart enough to realize they are screwed up and decided to make money finding out why. As i have friends that are both they all agree with me on this. You will find most on heavy meds themselves and have no clue what is up and really don't care

Have you gotten a second opinion? I seen a Psychiatrist yrs ago and he had me on 5 different meds from anxiety, depression, and bi-polar. I was a freaking zombie for months!! I finally told him I WAS NOT taking all those drugs. We actually had a screaming match in his office...lol
Needless to say, I seen a different one and am now just fine. I am on just one anti depressent a day now and couldnt feel better.

Tell them your insurance has lapsed and see how fast you get well. They are all about the money.
Now this is general but maybe one in a hundred will be on the up and up.IMO

You may be bi-bopolar (manic-depressive) but did you lead to any information that made her believe that you have recently (or even ever) had a manic episode? Also, when one generally thinks of mania, they think of full-blown mania, you know, the "hey I am super human, I can fly kind of stuff, but actually there is a another form or manic depression called Type 2 where the individidual has hypomania (which are just like slight highs from usual depression, it's not a scientific way to describe this, I'm just trying to make it easier to understand) Many people who suffer from type 2 actually look at the hypomania episodes as a relief from the depression, as long as they don't create dangererous behaviour or thoughts. I think if you ask for clarification, and then do some research on your own perhaps it won't be so upsetting even if she IS right. I'm not saying that she is, but I do diagree with some others that say they are just "hokey" or whatever word are used. The incompetence can be found in absolutely any professional. The only think I would make add is to make sure that see are seeing a Board Certified Psychiatrist, not a psychologist and although perfectly competent in other areas, not even a family doctor. I suppose the worst thing you can do is to take advice from internet boardies (including me) check it out yourself. If you need any help finding the right resources, you are welcome to PM me. If money or lack of insurance is an issue, I can probably help you locate some local resources depending on where you live, but help is available in most metro areas. Don't give up. And even if you think the MD is wrong (and yes, a Psychiatrist is an MD), and you are only depressed, the problem doesn't generally just disappear unless you can wiggle your nose from side to side :)

I've gone to some medical docs who I thought were incompentent too so not judging just one type of doc.
One shrink told me to think "happy thoughts" and it would make me better. GAAAA if I could I would you moron. But then I got a good one and you just know they are understanding the problem. He gave me the right meds, talked the talk---and you know it when you hear it---and he was the best.
You need to shop around for medical docs just like any other service you are buying. They are not God and know everything. Some are good and some are really bad. There is no law you have to go with only one when you can chose.

No , this psychiatrist didn't tell me I was manic- depressive. She told me my mother was. She never met my mother. Mother was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 1970. She has been dead for 14 yrs. She lived to be 75. This dr was telling me that they didn't give shock treatments for schizophrenics. She said mom was misdiagnosed. She also said she knew this because her father was a psychiatrist during those years. I just thought she was wrong to even suggest such a thing since she never met my mother. Mother heard people talking to her etc, I have studied all about mental illness and I am sure she wasn't misdiagnosed. I am depressed. I have had that problem since my early twenties. I am very familiar how it works. I want treatment before it gets to the point I can't get out of bed. Oh yes I know about depression. My brother and sister both have anxiety problems. I think all these problems come from my mom. Of course not her fault. Anyway it just made me wonder about this dr and her stunning brilliance that she could diagnose the dead so easily .
