Found out today at the dentist all 4 of my wisdom teeth have to be pulled. I'm slated for April 11, 3 weeks from today. Have never had a tooth pulled and I have to admit I am a little scared. BTW I am 42 year old adult and most people get them pulled in their teen years.

I feel bad about this news but hope it will improve my mouth pain that I have been in for about a week. I thought it was a cavity. But no my worst fear teeth having to be pulled. Just don't know if I can wait another 3 weeks. But I'm gonna bite the bullet and have it done mind you.

Any words of wisdom (pardon the pun)?

I just had my last two pulled a while back (I am 34)

If it makes you feel any better... I had 27 teeth pulled at once and I was still a big wuss when it was time to pull my last two wisdom teeth lol

My dentist gives out valuim to take the day of and the day before the appt... that was a big help :D

I too have had all but one tooth pulled (I have one wisdom tooth hiding) The worse of it is having the shots in the upper part of your mouth. It literally feels like someone is jabbing something up into your head but KNOWING what to expect is alot better. Nobody told me so I about freaked when it happened (valium, vicadin and all  ) but yes, its well worth getting them removed and you wont have the pain in your mouth anymore.
Congrats on keeping such great teeth for so long! Dont be afraid, everything should go just fine! Just remember, no smoking or sucking on straws and stuff afterwards (it can pull the blood clots out, nasty sounding I know lol) Good luck, and let us know how it goes!

I have had two of my wisdom teeth pulled kidzpca, they were done on the same day. Honestly, the pulling of them was not bad at all. I didn't feel anything that I can remember anyway. The bad part though is when you start to get the feeling back. Be prepared with something to take for pain, hopefully your dentist will give you a prescription.

This will sound silly, but honestly, it worked very well for me. Make yourself a gallon of tea to drink. I like sweet tea, but it can be unsweetened if you like it that way. Leave it out so that it is room temperature. Room temp is very important because if it is cold, your mouth will hurt worse, if it is hot or warm, it will make you will bleed more. Every 30 minutes or so, get you small cup of it, put some in your mouth and gently swish, then swallow it. The herbs in the tea help promote healing.

Good luck to you.

i had all 4 pulled in one session. one of my wisdoms broke in my mouth months before i did anything to take care of it. they had to put me out, because they were impacted. i think that's what the denist told me. that was at least 5 years ago.
here's a few pieces of advice:
1.when you're under, you can't control yourself. i woke up singing david bowie's 'young americans' with my mouth full. the dentist should help you stay safe when you're out.
2.never watch a horror movie after the appointment. i saw 'hannibal' a couple of hours after, thinking i was tough. i'll never do that again. if you're going to watch a movie, either watch something you already know or one that's not too violent or scary.
3.you'll need to drink. i drank carnation instant breakfast for the first day, along with water.
4.if you can, take a couple days off. give yourself time to recover.

you'll be fine. i'll be rooting for you.....wait.

I hate to jump in on someone else's post but I want to thank everyone for their advice. Both of my boys had braces taken off their teeth last year and now their wisdom teeth need pulled to keep them from shifting their teeth. I'm dreading it for them but maybe with all the helpful hints people are giving things may go easier for them and for you to kidzpca. Good luck with yours!:)

I had my wisdom teeth pulled out in two different sessions, after they numb you with the needle and then give you the gas it's no big deal. I hope you find the same pain free experience that I had.

They never game me any gas. They numbed the area then gave me a shot and pulled the teeth... that was it!

To be honest I really thought that I would be in pain when the numbness wore off, but I really wasn't. They gave me a script for lortab, but I never took them because tylenol worked just fine......

But don't tell DH that, because I stayed in our room for 2 days while he took care of everything LOL

The worst thing of the entire thing was the waiting time before having it done.

My mom years ago had to have hers pulled in the emergency room. They had gotten infected and the infection had dangerously spread throughout her body! If it's recommended, do it. Things are never as bad as your imagination.

Good luck! ;)

The thought of it is probably more painful. I had all of mine pulled on my
30th birthday. Got shots and gas. Worst thing was "proper me" saying that the gas feeling reminded of me of highschool. I remember the dentist and his helper look at each other when I said that. I didn't swell and had very little pain afterwards. Good luck!:)

Tea will help stop bleeding. If you are bleeding alot take a tea bag and bite down on like it was gauze. You can do this if you ever cut your self too.

Gosh, I guess I'm really lucky. I had my top 2 pulled about a year ago at age 44. It was done in the dentist's office with just a local. One tore through my gum, so I ended up with 2 stitches. I walked home afterwards and had very minor pain. Didn't even need to take Tylenol. I did have some bleeding problems due to my medication, but that was minor too. The holes closed in about 2 weeks.

I had all four of mine pulled at the same time and I was older than you are. I went to an oral surgeon and it was in his office, not a hospital. My dentist recommended him.

It was a breeze really. They put me out. They called me in and sat me in the chair. I talked to the dentist while he got ready and the next thing I knew his nurse was telling me it was over and I could get up now.

My hubby drove me there and home. When I got home I slept the sedative off and took just two aspirin. Never did get the prescription for pain filled since I had no pain to speak of.

Follow the dentist's instructions about food and drink and you should be fine. Soft foods and no straws. You do not want to get a dry socket. I heard they hurt bad.

It took awhile for the holes to fill in but they did. AND my teeth DID shift. My dentist told me they would't but my bite is different. I am use to it now. No big deal.

I concur with most everyone here. I have all 4 pulled and it really was not bad at all. A little disomfort and bleeding, but nothing at all severe. It sure was nice to have my mouth be less crowded afterward. Wish I had done it years ago!!

Good luck!

I had all of mine pulled at one session, and I HATE the dentist! Actually the waiting and leading up to it made me think it was going to be horrible!! But actually it was remarkably not as bad as I thought. The pain after, for me anyways, was managable. Plus once it was over I was relieved. I was 35, by the way, when I had mine out.

Good luck and well wishes to you :)

I was 17 when I had all mine done, they were all impacted. I remember they gave me an iv drip so I didn't feel anything :)) Was pretty happy until everything wore off. Then I wasn't so happy. My grandmother went with me---I'm 5'4 and she was no even 5'....and she tried to carry me out hehehe. You'll be fine and be glad when the mouth pain is done.

My mom had this done years ago, and was very nervous. She wanted to be asleep for the procedure. She called 1800dentist, and they found her a dentist that would put her to sleep for it.
Ive never had it done, I only have one that came through all the way, Im 28 and i hope the rest never come through.

I had two wisdom teeth removed during major reconstructive jaw surgery when I was 17. It was an 8 hour surgery to fix an overbite, so the oral surgeron felt it would be best to just take the wisdom teeth out while in there. haha Needlessly to say, I was pretty out of it. I did have four permanent teeth removed at 12 to make room for braces. I was given gas and the numbing medicine for that, so it wasn't bad at all. Now my brother had his wisdom teeth and ate McDonalds later that evening. It varies by the person and his/her tolerance to pain.

I had all 4 pulled at once and Im also a baby..Thats why I had them knock me out..The only thing they do use an IV for that and I hate needles too lol..But only 1 wisdom tooth was up and the other 3 where impacted so GAS ME lol.. He had them out really quick...Got some pain pills..Alot of bleeding afterwards.DONT spit the blood out.My dentist called me later that night and I told him It was still bleeding and he said if you spit it out it will not allow the blood to clot. I stuck a tea bag in my mouth and that helped stop the bleeding.Best of luck to you.You will be ok.:)

None of the wisdom teeth are impacted. All are straight and should come out ok. Also heard from a co-worker that most upper wisdom teeth have no root to speak of and almost just fall out when pulled correctly. It is the bottom ones that will likely cause more problems.

Today I changed the appointment to next Wednesday March 28. I figure the sooner this can be done the better.

Still plan on all four to be done but will make sure that if necessary that it be broken up to two visits. Dentist says one on each side needs to be removed but both the dentist and I agree that both on each side need to go.

I generally don't drink from straws and don't smoke so hopefully this will help prevent dry socket.

I'm starting to look forward to getting this done and yes I Can't stand to go to the dentist. Bad experience when I was 16 but still go...I have been prescribed a mild sedative for the night before and just before the procedure. I suppose I should perhaps ask for an antibiotic if not offered after all is said and done. Huh?

I wouldn't think that you would need an antibiotic unless there is already an infection (and normally they won't pull them if there is unless an emergency) but you can always ask. My dentist gave me a script of penicillin to start taking a week before the appt, but thats because I previously had an infection and he wanted to make sure that it was completely gone.

One of the roots of my bottom tooth was hooked under my jawbone, but still came out ok. I felt a lot of pressure when they pulled that one. They will be able to tell if there might be a problem like that by looking at the x-rays.

Really theres nothing that no one can say or do to help ease the anxiety of going (lord knows I tried LOL) but I hope all goes well!

It isn't that bad .. I had mine done when I was 17, but they are out .. I wasn't put to sleep and it wasn't a horrible experience for me.

If your teeth are showing, it will probably be easier to pull. If they are impacted, that is when it can get tricky.

Anyway, good luck and try not to sweat it .. it will all be over soon.

I worked for an oral surgeon so if you have any questions or need anything, let me know. Was with him four years and I was part of the team assisting in surgeries, calling in prescriptions, doing post op checks, etc. We had front and back (billing computer-front surgery/etc-back) and I was in the back. Are you having a general?

I had mine surgically removed, all four were impacted. I had it done at 10 AM and by 6 PM, I was eating soup. I wasn't in a great deal of pain, just uncomfortable. I slept a lot the first two days. Just take things easy, only word of caution, don't drink from a straw for a while or you will get a dry socket

No general. Only local with the mild sedative that I take the night before and the hour prior to the procedure. This guy also specializes in dentures and some reconstructive but refers to more experienced specialists when necessary. He states that all four are in straight and should come out good with little or no trouble. I even looked at the x-rays. I'm just a little nervous since I have never had any teeth pulled. (except a partial tooth that I busted in half at a local chinese buffet on a piece of clam shell that I didn't notice while eating.)

I had all 4 pulled this past July...No biggie--I did not even have stitches put in. Kind of nice being off work for a few days---enjoyed getting lots of sleep. I was 31 years old.

Done today at about 1pm he was done by 2pm.

All came out alright. Didn't even feel the top ones being done. But did feel a tug with the bottom two.

All had to be stitched shut but go back next week to have the stitches removed.

For now I have only been able to eat pudding, soup at hand soup and Tea.

Had one pulled a while back..wasn't bad at all. A few shots and presto..tooth was gone and so was the pain. Didn't have much discomfort after either..a few advil is all it took. The worst part of it all was the waiting room right before I had it done! Good Luck..You will be fine!
