DHs grandpa said he found it under a house that was recently demolished in rural alabama...

Its over 6" long. Made of a heavy cast iron. Looks like a cage of some sort , as you can open it and lock it, it also has the little doo-hickey on top, to hang it from somewhere...?

It is a candle holder, also for incense. I used to have one years ago and gave it away.

thanks! the incense / candle holder were a few guess the family had made. I've never seen anything like it before.

It's a string/twine holder. You put a ball of string in it, feed the end through the hole in the bottom and pull out what you need.

Yes, that's what it is. I remember one hanging in the barn when I was growing up.
