I like Reader's Digest. I just put in a 2 yr subscription through a school fundraiser about 3 weeks ago. Then last week I receive a book in the mail "Extrordinary Uses for Ordinary Things". It is from Reader's Digest, no envelope on the outside or inside. Nothing saying why I am getting it, just the book and a couple of little pamphlet type books. So, I think that it must be a free gift for subscribing. Then yesterday I get a bill from Reader's Digest for 31 dollars for the book!!!! Nothing saying when it was ordered or how. I don't think it is possible that I signed up to get this anywhere. I would have remembered since I never ever pay $31 for a book!!

I have already thrown away the box it came in, so what should I do?

If you did not in any way request it then it is yours to keep. If they sent it to you expecting you to keep it and pay for it (which many people fall prey to) and order more without your consent then you are not obligated to pay for it. The next one that comes mark refused on it and drop it in the mail without opening it...........they will get the hint

Call them and explain. Since you did not order it, they are obligated to pay for the return shipping and credit your account. Most of the time, they credit your account and let you keep the item. I wouldn't just ignore the bill, it will eventually end up in collections.

Yes, it will go to collections, I had the same thing happen to me about 2 years ago. My attorney couldn't even get it removed.

If you've ever entered a sweepstakes online, there's a possibility that you agreed to have a book sent on free trial in the process of entering the sweeps. I'd say put the book in a padded envelope and ship it back. Include delivery confirmation so they can't say they didn't get it back.

Those things will go on to collections, and it is certainly not worth having your credit score go down over a $31 book.
