Our neighbors right next door are really nice people for the most part. We get along and always have something to talk about etc. My problem is they have this cat that they have declawed. Everyday they bring her outside and leave her tied up. I can see so many things happening to her one of these days. I said something about it and they said "We didn't mean for her to be a outside cat, but she cries to go out." We have 2 cats and the only time they go out is when they are in the carrier. I don't know what I can do about this, but I feel like I'm just standing by watching her get killed. I normally never get into anyone's life but this makes me sick.

I have to argue in their defense that we also have a cat that will go outside come hell or highwater and she will cry for hours to get out. She always comes back in after a bit. She is declawed as well (in the front) and can defend herself better than any cat I have seen. She catches birds even hawkes! FYI before anyone gets onto me, we did NOT declaw her, we got her from someone else who had her declawed, and yes she is fixed. If we do not let her out she WILL find a way to get out! I think she was a stray at some point, or something.
That being said, I don't know if I agree with the fact of tying the cat up outside.

This is so sad. :(
If a dog comes by, this tied up declawed cat is history.
My kid cries to drive my car; doesn't mean I'm going to let him do it.

I agree about the kid thing, but the cat won't just sit there and cry. When anyone opens a door or a window she will run/jump out. Believe you me I had my own issues with it and tried forever to break her of the habit and it did not work. She snuck out the second someone opened a door and she is fast!

I have an outside cat that we rescued, he hates being indoors and normally just sleeps on the porch all day.
I too, would be upset if I saw a cat tied up. Thats just wrong. What are they afraid of, that he / she'll run away? Most cats stay where they are feed, if this cat ran away, it would be for his own good... I would run away from that family, too!
POOR KITTY!
I would call the humane society and see if their are any local laws against tieing (sp?) up cats. I know that in Nashville, Dogs have to have @ least a 12ft chain, and must have shelter, I'm sure their are rules for cats as well.
When I 1st moved here, I was horrified at the conditions some of these people kept their dogs, It made me sick to see these poor dogs ties to porches or kept in 4 ft x 4 ft pens, so I mailed them letters that you can print from http://www.dogsdeservebetter.org/ and a few weeks later one of the guys got rid of his dogs!

Personally, and I know I will get flamed for this, but I had rather see the cat tied up than roaming the neighborhood, getting into peoples stuff, and if a male cat spraying someone elses property. Where I live the idiots let their cats roam all times of the year (yes winter too, and I live in MI) I am always having to chase cats off that are into my stuff, spraying my things, and digging in my garden. I absolutely hate cats for this reason, but since I dont live in the city limits, there is nothing that can be done about it.

I called the humane society. They said while it is stupid to leave a cat tied up, it isn't against the law.
It doesn't really matter now. About 30 minutes ago I was upstairs and heard a terrible noise. It was a dog running the neighborhood, and now the cat is dead. Thanks for listening.

Sorry to hear that. It is good that people like you are concerned with animals welfare. :)

Well the laws suck and now the cat is dead..I am so sorry to hear this. How can the laws be changed?? This story really bothers me and what people will do to their own animals. Did you see the family yet?? Are they even sorry?
It's not rocket science...When your home. let the cat outdoors ... When your not home. then the cat comes indoors. That poor cat..All he wanted was to go outside and romp around. It's really sad.

OMG, that makes me so mad!
My neighbor's cat insists on being outside, too. (Donnagg, I see where you're coming from with the cat jumping outside). My neighbor tries to keep her cat inside, but she runs out so I leave my door open during the day (while she's working) and the cat runs into my place until her mom is home.
I can't imagine leaving a cat tied and clawless. Some people shouldn't be able to own animals.

l have a persian that was declawed and fixed when she was giving to me. I've always been afraid for her to get outside. I just know the dogs would kill her if she got out. She tries to slip out every chance she gets, but luckily we catch her before something else does. I've now had her for over 14 years. I think it's a sad life for a animal to always be kept in the house, but I do it out of fear something will kill her. I would never declaw a cat myself for that reason. Plus when she was giving to me she acted like her paws bothered her allot. Maybe the vet that did it, didn't do a good job. Now there is things that grow back that resemble curled up claws and they get hung in the carpet. :(
Also I wouldn't ever tie a cat up in the yard no matter what. If a dog gets ahold of one he will more than likely shake it so hard it will break it's neck. I've seen dogs grab cats and try to skin them alive. They will grab them with their teeth and put their foot on them and try to pull their hide off. It's a horrible thing to see, but I've seen it happen. Luckily I was there and got the dog to let go of the cat. Even grown men have a hard time getting away from a dog attack, just think what a cat would be put through.

My neice has a declawed cat---before she got her---and she won't stay in the house or else she urinates everywhere. This cat has been an outdoor cat for yours and has never been attacked. Why? Because she wasn't tied up for a trapped kill victim. It can roam and climb trees like she had long nails. She does have back nails and they can at least run and climb for protection.
Shame on your neighbors. The least they could have done was supervise when the cat was out and tied up. Be out there. If they didnt' have a fence they sould have had the smarts to know they were just tying her up to die.

I just wanted to show y'all this link.
I was looking for information on if you should let declawed cats outside or not. And everything I found said you shouldn't do that. But none of the sites I read metioned if that meant for all claws removed or just the front ones.
Anyway this site has allot of information and photos to help people really understand declawing.

How aweful!!! I call the ASPC on them

I would never have any of my cats declawed. I worked as a vet tech and I saw what was done. It's a horrible thing and so painful. I know some people do it because they don't want their furniture scratched up. But if you own a cat your furniture is going to get scratched up. The new carpet will be pulled and the list goes on. Some people just want a beautiful cat to keep inside and I don't think they realize the pain they are going to put the cat through by having it declawed. JMHO :)

those people should be charged with animal cruelty, no one in their right mind ties up a declawed cat!!!!!!!!! remove the animals only defence, then tie him up as for bait!!!!!! what a shame!!!
if the yard had been fenced in that would be different,

We have 3 dogs and 1 cat. All are indoor pets. Maxwell (cat) is declawed.....that was done before we got him. I understand people wanting guard dogs, cats to catch mice.....However, I don't understand tying them up and making them sit in one spot all day long. That is just cruel.
Sorry about the cat. I'm sure there's not much you can do about it. If you've already called ASPCA/animal control and they wouldn't come out to investigate.
We are FOREVER catching the dog next door....running the neighborhood. Woman doesn't care about the dog AT ALL. He's an in/out pet. We put him in our backyard until she or her son gets home....this happens about 2 x's a week. It's really sad. We've offered to take him but she won't hear of it. :( :( :(

This will probably irritate some of you. but why is it the owners fault? Their animal was tied up in thier yard where it should be safe from someone elses dog running rampant. I have three cats. One of mine is like houdini and will get out nbo matter what.....all I can do is give her the most comfortable life possible. Its more cruel to lock up a cat that is born to be outside. And claws or not a dog can kill a cat in two seconds.
How come none of you are bashing the dogs owner?? I am sure there is probably a leash law for the dog.

Who knows if the dog was a stray? Yes, the cat was on their property, but how many loose dogs do you know of that respect property lines?
If I let my kid walk alone at night, everyone would be disgusted that a serial killer got a hold of him, but they would also blame me for being irresponsible.
The cat's owner was irresponsible.

I agree with you.
That dog should have been on a leash
I also agree with Quaker_Parrots; I'd rather see an animal tied up or in the house rather that running rampant all over the neighborhood, crapping up peoples property. Worse is seeing an animal in the middle of the street, dead from being run over by a car.

About a month ago, my cat was attacked by stray dogs that came in our yard. My cat wasn't tied up or declawed. He never had a chance against those dogs. I agree that the dogs owner should be liable.

My cat is also an "inside/outside cat that will NOT stay inside the house - HOWEVER I would never tie him up so that he could not ESCAPE a threat. If he was in a kennel/cage/run at least the cat would have had SOME protection from a stray or loose dog. Tied up ... no way to run or hide .... declawed or not ... that was a death sentence. ( Here he would have been at the mercy of dogs, other cats, hawks, falcon and gators. ) We have a cat door into our house and other into the shed for our cat to run and hid as needed.
Both pet owners are at fault.

I see your point there, makes sense. Some people just seem to think you should never let your cat out at all. I wish that was an option for me. I rescued Sissi from her Mother who was a feral stray. Sissi was born outdoors and she has never seemed to lose that wild streak.

Now im sure im going to get bashed for this...but we where not there to see how long a leash the cat was on. so it's not right to say mean things about the owner when we cant see with our own eye's. plus ppl do some time's leave part of the story out..not saying the op did.
my neighbors have 4 cats and every day they bring them out and leash them up to the tree in their yard. they live on the corner. the leash's are long enough for the cat's to move around & they are in the shade. Maybe that cat was all so on a long leash ...but we were not there to see this...so how can you say turn them in..call so & so on them...
i have 2 cats and a dog..i keep my dog on a leash but some time's she get's away from me...am i a bad owner cuz i have a dog that likes to run if she get's the chance? both my cats are declawed and go out every chance they get..can they defend them self's ..yep..they both can bring a rabbit down in no time..so i guess im a bad owner because i let my cat's out with out a leash...my cat's cant even wear collar's because they are known to try and get out of them and end up hanging them self's...i guess i could be a bad owner for that too..
All im trying to say is we didnt see it with our own eye's...so how can you judge the owner with out seeing what really happend.???
