Now if she had mocked some aspect of the Muslim religion there would be rioting in the streets and a call for her head on a pike. Pundits all over the world would be critising her for her "cultural insensitivity".

Why is it acceptable to insult Christianity but no other religion ?

And didn't she become "enlightened" by join the Kabbalah faith ??

LOS ANGELES - Less than 12 hours after Madonna crucified herself on a mirrored cross, the Catholic League expressed its discontent with the concert stunt.

The controversial diva wore a crown of thorns and sang while hanging from a cross during Sunday night's opener of her "Confessions" world tour at The Forum in Inglewood.

"Knock off the Christ-bashing," Catholic League president Bill Donohue said in a statement Monday. "It's just pathetic."

Though Donohue said that Madonna "has been spicing up her act with misappropriated Christian imagery for a long time," he thought that her faith in Kabbalah might inspire new respect for religion.

"I guess you really can't teach an old pop star new tricks," he said. "Poor Madonna keeps trying to shock. But all she succeeds in doing is coming across as a boring bigot."

A message left with Madonna's spokeswoman was not immediately returned.

The "Confessions" tour continues through Sept. 4 with dates throughout North America and Europe.

What was her message? I am as important as Christ? All she does is make a fool out of herself, poor thing.

Gotta love the example she's setting for her kids....

I love her music, but not her actions. If you have to be that controversial to get noticed it's time to give up the jig.

There are 2 things that I have a hard time tolerating, one is anything negative about the USA. The other is anything that mocks Christianity. Anything else is tolerable even if I don't agree with it.

When I see anything mocking Christianity, I suddenly lose interest in it and feel like it's something sickening & repulsive. :( I can be enjoying a program, and when something like that comes up, I have to turn it. To me it's like laughing your butt off at a funny program and all of a sudden they flash a photo on the screen of one of your dead loved ones....it's that shocking and sobering to me.

You would think a woman closing in on 50 would evolve a bit more than she has demonstrated.

The guy from the Catholic League had soem great comments! He's so right. She's just trying so hard to be relevant and failing miserably.

I saw the concert, and the stories on the news were taken out of context.

The backgorund screens were shwoing the Africa children and messages like save the children and help africa

madonna was wearing a very modest outfit, long skirt and long sleeve blouse

the song was very beautiful too

she was not mocking the religion

there were also symbols of all religions that beleive in the 1 true GOD on the screen at the end as to unify Jews, Christians, Muslims

Hello,

I thought you would be interested in the article she posted as to her reasons for the scene. This was on her fanclub site.

"I am very grateful that my show was so well received all over the world. But there seems to be many misinterpretations about my appearance on the cross and I wanted to explain it myself once and for all.
There is a segment in my show where three of my dancers "confess" or share harrowing experiences from their childhood that they ultimately overcame. My 'confession' follows and takes place on a Crucifix that I ultimately come down from. This is not a mocking of the church. It is no different than a person wearing a Cross or 'Taking Up the Cross' as it says in the Bible. My performance is neither anti- Christian, sacrilegious or blasphemous. Rather, it is my plea to the audience to encourage mankind to help one another and to see the world as a unified whole. I believe in my heart that if Jesus were alive today he would be doing the same thing.

My specific intent is to bring attention to the millions of children in Africa who are dying every day, and are living without care, without medicine and without hope. I am asking people to open their hearts and minds to get involved in whatever way they can. The song ends with a quote from the Bible's Book of Matthew 'For I was hungry and you gave me food. I was naked and you gave me clothing. I was sick and you took care of me and God replied, Whatever you did for the least of my brothers...you did it to me'. Please do not pass judgment without seeing my show."
