Study Title: “Neurobiological Studies of Stress and Depression”
New York State Psychiatric Institute IRB#4344

Study Summary: This is a brain imaging research study of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with and without depression. Eligible participants receive two brain positron emission tomography (PET) scans on one day which assess the amounts of two proteins of the brain’s serotonin system in various brain regions. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan is also obtained, and there are interviews and rating scales that are part of the study. Participants also receive a test of the stress system known as the low dose dexamethasone test. Treatment is offered to participants in the study.

Who is Eligible? Individuals who:
• Are between 18 and 65 years of age
• Have PTSD with or without clinical depression
• Are otherwise medically healthy
• Are not currently on an antidepressant medication
• Do not have current alcohol or substance use disorder

Procedures for Determination of Eligibility
• Interested individuals should call the study coordinator, Brendan Carroll, at 212 543-5902
• for a phone screen interview
• If there are no obvious reasons in the phone interview why someone would be ineligible, the study coordinator will invite the individual in for an in-person diagnostic interview by a psychologist
• If eligible by the psychologist’s interview, the individual will meet with a psychiatrist to:
o clarify any information related to diagnosis
o hear about the details of the study, including risks, and review the consent form
o sign the consent form if deciding to participate
o provide a medical history, have a physical exam, and have blood and urine tests sent for medical screening tests and urine drug test

Procedures of the Study
• A PET scan day which includes two PET scans, one in the morning and one in the afternoon
• A low dose dexamethasone test which involves two blood tests and taking one dose of a synthetic stress hormone the night before the second blood test
• An MRI scan
• Interviews and rating scales

Compensation for time and inconvenience for the PET scans, MRI scan, and interviews/ratings is $350

No Cost Treatment is Offered for Participants in the Study
• Up to 6 months of no cost outpatient treatment visits with one of the study psychiatrists, or
• Up to 8 weeks of no cost inpatient treatment at the New York State Psychiatric Institute

Interested individuals should call the study coordinator, Brendan Carroll, at 212 543-5902

Job location is Columbia Medical Center

Compensation: $350 and free treatment
