Some schools are suspending students who walk out, but not here in the People's Republic of Montgomery County, Md. They're going to earn school credit for skipping school* and protesting enforcement of our immigration laws (via WaPo): http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/04/07/AR2006040701828.html

The Montgomery County schools' decision to grant students community service credit for attending Monday's immigration rights protest is raising concern among some parents as well as activists who say officials should focus on education, not political advocacy.
Montgomery is the only Washington area school system offering students credit for taking part in the event, to be held on the Mall -- a decision Superintendent Jerry D. Weast said is consistent with how the system has operated.

"This is nothing new,'' schools spokesman Brian K. Edwards said about the decision. "Advocacy is allowed."

But in the superheated atmosphere surrounding the immigration debate, the decision is drawing sharp criticism from many quarters. Yesterday, school system offices were flooded with angry phone calls as word of its action circulated among conservative radio hosts.

In a memo sent to Board of Education members, Weast said that "callers were abusive to school system staff, using derogatory ethnic comments in expressing their views." He added, "This is not the first time the national debate on immigration policy has engendered harsh commentary for the school system and staff as a target for political purposes."

Edwards said students will receive service learning hours for participating in the rally as long as they do so under the supervision of a community group that has been approved by the school system.

Student participation in the event is being organized by CASA of Maryland Inc., a Silver Spring-based group that works with the Latino community. It is CASA's role -- as organizer -- that has some questioning whether the school system is allowing an outside group to push its political agenda on students. "I do understand that CASA offers some worthy services to immigrants and that's noble, but it's a stretch to allow students to protest for a particular side of an issue,'' said parent Melissa Andersen. "I'm taken aback by it. I think it's poor judgment."

CASA of Maryland is a taxpayer-funded, open-borders organization whose leader made headlines in February when he threatened the children of pro-immigration enforcement advocates: http://www.humaneventsonline.com/blog-detail.php?id=12678

An article published yesterday by the Sean Sands of Maryland Community Newspapers Online quoted Casa de Maryland’s Executive Director Gustavo Torres saying “We are going to picket their houses, and the schools of their kids and go to their work. If they are going to do this to us, we are going to respond in the same way, to let people know their neighbors are extremists, that they are anti-immigrant. They are going to hear from us.”

Will the Montgomery schools give credit to schoolkids who participate in counter-rallies held by the Minutemen or other pro-immigration enforcement advocates?

Does it seem to you guys that we are out numbered? On the news it shows all these people supporting it. But if you take notice, and it's hard not to, they are mainly immigrants.

BTW- I am against this!

If they'd all take the day to go get thier papers and become legal, I wouldn't mind a bit.

I read that Mexico's biggest revenue is the money the illegal aliens make here and send back to Mexico!

They're baaack. Illegal alien public relations experts are advising their followers to put aside the Mexican flags and tone down their radicalism, but many reconquistadors and their friends can't help themselves. Hat tip to John A. for the protest photos today from Dallas:

There's no photo, but the Dallas Morning News described this:
http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/latestnews/stories/040906dnmetprotest.1b36165d.html

Although the stars and stripes predominated, some people opted to paint themselves in red, white and green, the colors of the Mexican flag. A girl no older than 6 had her shirt painted: “Hell, no, we won’t go. Mexicans stick together.”

Similar sentiments at the anti-immigration enforcement rally in St. Paul, Minn.:

St. Louis:

The Dallas Morning News also reported that counter-protesters were assaulted and forced to leave under police protection:

Police told counterprotesters that they could protect them only to a point, and offered to escort them out through an underground parking lot. Six people left with police who were carrying shields and wearing helmets and shin pads. “They’re obviously outnumbered here. If they choose to leave, we can arrange that,” said Dallas police Lt. William Humphrey.

Miles Walters, 16, a sophomore at Richardson High School, said he was scared when people started throwing water bottles and hunkered under a building for protection. “I wasn’t expecting it to be this bad,” he said. “Because we take pride in our country they hate us and call us racist.”

More:

A small group of counterprotesters shouted from a parking lot at Ross Avenue and Harwood Street: “USA, USA, You’re gonna go home, you’re gonna go home.”

Said Elijah McGrew, 48: “They are breaking the law and no one should get amnesty. If I break the law, I don’t get amnesty.”

Also in the group was Ben Blewusi, who said he came to the U.S. legally from Ghana in 2004. “Illegal immigration is a crime in every country. I believe they are a drain on the economy and don’t pay taxes, and employers take advantage of them and enslave their labor. And as a result it drives down wages for legal migrants and U.S. citizens,” Mr. Blewusi said.

Near City Hall, more than 100 chanting protesters broke off from the main march and headed toward another group of counterprotesters. Police moved in around the counterprotesters, some of whom had hurled plastic water bottles at the large procession.

If you are holding a counter-protest, send your photos and I'll post them.

Meanwhile, keep an eye on what government school officials are doing in your neighborhood.

In Tuscon: http://kvoa.com/Global/story.asp?S=4746419&nav=HMO6HMaY

The superintendent of the Tucson Unified School District is under fire for sending school buses to pick up student following an immigration reform protest.
But Superintendent Roger Pfeuffer defended his decision, saying police asked for the buses because a crowd of students in front of the Federal Building in Tucson was growing, water supplies were low and the temperatures were rising.

Rep. Jonathan Paton, R-Tucson, criticized Pfeuffer in a letter, asking for an explanation of the busing issue.

Paton also wanted to know about a student assembly at Tucson High Magnet School in which Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the United Farm Workers, said, "Republicans hate Latinos."

Paton said he wanted to find out if the assembly was mandatory, and he criticized district officials for allowing "political propaganda."

Pfeuffer said the assembly was not connected with recent walkouts by students protesting for immigration reform and said Huerta's appearance was part of a series of events commemorating Cesar Chavez Day held each year.

Yesterday, I noted my home county's decision to give school credit to students who attend the April 10 illegal alien event in D.C. Here's contact info for the Montgomery County Board of Education: boe-at-fc.mcps.k12.md.us

Also watch your city officials. Some people are acting as if sanctuary extremists like the politicians in San Francisco are something new: http://www.examiner.com/Top_News-a70996~Mayor__City_would_ignore_legislation_if_it_ were_to_pass.html

Mayor Gavin Newsom said Thursday that The City will not comply with any federal legislation that criminalizes efforts to help illegal immigrants.
The mayor also denounced a bipartisan congressional proposal that would beef up border security and allow as many as 12 million illegal immigrants to gain legal status.

Newsom, who has not been afraid to wade into controversial national issues such as gay marriage, appeared with a group of elected officials on the steps of City Hall to support immigrants, “documented as well as undocumented.”Newsom also signed a resolution sponsored by Supervisor Gerardo Sandoval, and passed unanimously by the Board of Supervisors, urging San Francisco law enforcement not to comply with criminal provisions of any new immigration bill.

[b]Kevin from Eckernet attended the illegal immigration rally in Minnesota yesterday and has lots of pics.

http://www.eckernet.com/2006/04/minnesota_immigration_rally_my.html

Here are a couple that stood out: Guatemala's flag hoisted above the US flag

Ecuador's flag flies over the US flag.

It was at this point I think someone realized I wasn't a "friendly" and tried to knock my camera from my hands

It's amazing, isn't it? You have illegal aliens marching in our streets, demanding things they have no right whatsoever to ask for, while they're insulting our nation by flying the flag of the country they left above our flag. The sheer gall of these illegal aliens is just beyond belief.

John Hawkins at Right Wing News has more photos from the Minneapolis demonstration and responds to the Che sign waver in Dallas with some questions for GOP leaders:

So, John McCain, Mike DeWine, Lindsey Graham, Arlen Specter, Sam Brownback, George Bush, & Bill Frist...Can you explain to us again why in the world we'd want to put the sort of person who was carrying this sign on the "path to citizenship?"

Also, could you explain again why we're better off having this person here in a guest worker program than a decent person who respected our laws enough to wait in line to enter this country legally?

Heck, if you're really in a generous mood, you could explain to us why we should believe there will be a security crackdown on illegals later, after the amnesty and guest worker programs are pushed through, when tens of thousands and in some cases, even hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens can gather in our streets, apparently without the slightest fear of being deported?

Shoot national illegal alien day could have turned into Immigration day.
Tons of them all in one spot would have been an easy round up lol ;)
