I am a bus driver...but this really blows me away!!!!!

My friend is also a bus driver, who drives for a district that her kids DO NOT attend. Last Tuesday 2/21/06, her kids were getting on the bus, and the bus driver HIT one of her kids...the child was not hurt, but she did call the transportation dept for the district that her children attend. I was so shocked to hear what they had to say to her. NOT knowing that she is a bus driver, they informed her that she had no idea what she was talking about when she told them what the driver did, and didn't do. After they argued with her about the new "S" endorsement on the CDL, (which means that when a bus comes to stop to pick up children, the are to pull the brake, and put the bus in NEUTRAL, buses do not have park, and open their door, the bus driver did not do this) they then asked her how she knew all of this. She then told them that she was a bus driver. They told her that they would have to call her back. They called her back a little bit later and told her that they read the "S" endorsement part of the driving book that you get form the DMV, and that yes she was right. WELL, the very next day Wednesday 2/22/06, a driver from that same district RAN OVER a 5 year old child, as of right now, that child is still alive, but barely And do you know why this driver did this?? because she did not pull her brake and put her bus in neutral AND she did not make sure that all of the students where clear of the bus. THIS makes me sooo mad!!!!

Being a bus driver I have seen things and heard things. BUT this just makes me want to choke the crap right out of someone. NO< I don't have children, and I would be very upset if anything like that had happen to me, and you know what the really crappy part of all of this is...the district wants to blame the children for this....my thought...blame the bus driver who's not paying attention to the children or to what is going on around her bus. Open your eyes...your in charge of a 30 ft vehicle, you have 7 mirrors in front of that bus, what the hell are you doing, and whats more important than making sure all of the children are safely away from the bus????

Ok, Im off of my soap box now...thanks for letting me vent!

 omg! I used to drive a bus and could never imagine hiting a child. I understand that they might run out in front of your vehicle, but if the drivers were suppose to be stopped... how on earth did their vehicles move enough to run over a child! That is just so sad :( It sounds like the drivers in that district need to go back through training... *shakes head*

a few years a go my friends daughter was killed by her bus driver the little girl who was five was standing in front of the bus and the bus driver didnt make sure that the kids had all crossed the road. she took off and severed the childs spine, what was really horrible is that she stopped the bus, got off looked at the child laying there and then got back on her bus and continued her route!! even though there were tons of witnesses it was such a small town she got off with nothing and is driving today! there are rumors that shes hurt other kids but you cant prove it because everyone is friendly with her and are not talking.

That is horriable. The worst. I cannot imagine this happening. I just took 2 of the 3 tests (driving is next! ). I cannot believe people would be this careless! Just like leaving a child on the bus. I hope the children recover, how terriable!

I'm in PA and I noticed that several years ago they put a arm in front of the bus. When the bus stops this red arm swings out and the kids have to walk around it to get across the road. I am assuming this is so the bus driver can see if the kids are gone from in front of the bus. I realize if kids are messing around and not crossing they could stop in front of the bus and be standing close to it and still get hit. But I think it is a good idea.
Do the busses where you guys are at have this?

How horrible and sad that they cannot take responsibility. It is very frightening since most kids around here take a bus. Mine take a bus and this will give me nightmares. But to blame a small child is just not right.

Most of the buses here have the crossing bar, but not all of them....

Well First off I DO NOT like my childrens bus driver! He is a total JERK and does not deserve to be in charge of kids. But what I wanted to tell you is....Our driver makes all of the kids stand on the road in front of the bus and until they all are looking at them he will not allow them to cross the street. So in that aspect he is good but it is only b/c of the kids getting run over our depot made it a rule.

Secondly for anyone who might know the answer....Who is in charge of changing tires on the buses? Is it the drivers responsibility? Or the depots? Our drivers front tires are Bald as a Dave Chappell and I mean if you put a penny in the groove to check the tread it would be MAYBE 2 mm if that. I know that is not safe, But if you call the depot they treat you like crap and DO nothing! But that has to be breaking some kind of law or something isn't it? I think I am going to call the Depot one more time but then I am writing a letter to the editor! I am so sick of this district it is not even funny!

Your bus barn/bus depot is in-charge of that...BUT the driver should be reporting that the tires on his bus are crappy, and he needs new ones...

And, I was also trained to make the kids wait until "I" as the driver wave the children when it is safe.....

Right now, at this moment the child is is critical condition, but she is still alive. How in the world she's alive is beyond me....after hearing about the way it all happened, I just knew that there was noway that she could have survived...but she did.
