So since it is the time of the year when everyone starts discussing Halloween costumes I thought this was interesting.
My co-worker’s son is planning on being an ARMY soldier for Halloween; but not any ole soldier. He wants to be a wounded ARMY soldier. He did want to be a dead ARMY soldier but he changed his mind.
What do you think?
Would you let your son be a dead/wounded ARMY soldier?

I see nothing wrong with it - It would be great if he went around whining that he had only signed up so he could go to college for free, not to have to fight!!!!

Funny. It's that what they advertise?
And yep, I'd let my kid do that, but only if they wore a sign that said "Killed by Bush." :D

I guess it depends on who's house he is going to. If i had a son in the military, i dont really think i would like it.

Absolutely not but that's just my opinion.

Yeah, or one of Bush's toy soldiers.
Wonder what Bush will dress up as this year? I'm guessing a big prick!

I would never let my child dress up as a dead soldier. Totally tasteless and low class IMO. How would you feel if you were a mom who lost her military son? I would never want to take a chance to hurt someone so deeply that way. I know we have a member on here who lost her Military son, think about her. How would she feel? Do not drag kids into adult opinions on politics. Try teaching then respect.

What does that have to do with anything?
Like I said the child chose the costume. I asked her why and what she thought of it and she told me that she felt it was no different than if he wanted ot dress up like dracula, a zombie, or some other frightening image. He's only 5 he doesn't have an politcal reasoning behind it. He just things ARMY guys are cool and that blood and bleeding things are cool too.
I understand some people's reasons for disagreeing with this choice (he may change his mind again, I don't know) but this just shows what little children think some time.
Her father was active duty in the ARMY. I never asked her what his opinion was.

I remember when I was in 3rd grade my friend Sean was a dead soldier in the Halloween parade and no one had a problem with it. He even wore his daddy's uniform (took forever to get the fake blood out of it too).
I think the main reason people are offended by the costume now is because we are at war.

So you are saying that she prompted his choice? I don't think so all I know is that she condones it.

Now that you said it's a 5 year old, I definitely think it's in poor taste. I have a 7 year old and there's NO way he would dress like that.
Wanted to add:
To me there's a HUGE difference in dressing up like a dead soldier than dressing up alike a zombie or dracula. The last two are fictional. Soldiers are real.

Why does she condone it? doesn't she realize how many parents right now have lost their children over there? Doesn't she see how it will make people feel that have lost a loved one over there? Does she not know that anyone that answers the door to her son just might have recently lost a child over there? She needs to explain to her son that such a costume would make people sad right now.
I could see how a small child might come up with the idea. It could have been at school and the kids were discussing what would be a great scary costume. And of course all around them on the news right now is talking of death due to this war. But it's his mom's responsibility to let him know why that would be in poor taste.
.........spider man you say.....hmmmm....wonder what kind of web he is weaving now.

I don’t know. It struck me as interesting that she was allowing her son to dress in this fashion. If I had a son would I let him dress like that? No. I’d want him to be something cooler, something with more imagination. I’ve not probed deeper into her decision to allow him to choose this costume.
Maybe she feels that since we haven’t had a lot of casualties from Maine it’s not so bad. (That’s just a guess.)

no, not with what is going on now.As a Marine mom and a aunt to a medic in Kuwait front lines....HELL NO! Reason is this, it's hard enought to think about this damn war,our children dying for a war I think is useless (won't even get started, yes I am a Bush basher too ) but to see it at your door as a "costume"....I might..........I'll leave it at that lol

He is only 5 years old. 5 year old children don't look to hurt people in such a way. My son was a soldier that was exposed to chemical agents for Halloween, and at the time we lived at Fort Benning Georgia and honestly no one took offense to it. If the mom feels unsure about it,maybe she can talk to him about it in terms a 5 year old would understand. But irregardless, no one should say anything out of the way to a 5 year old if he still decides to dress that way, because after all he is just a 5 year old.

Anyone see 28 days later? There are dead soldiers in that! Personally, I woulnd't want my child dressing like that. But, from the mentality of the child, for example: My dd was a princess last halloween. She decided half way through halloween that she wanted something scarire. I didn't want to mess up the outfit on the first year. Well, sure enough, I ask her what she wants to be...her answer..."a princess.....a dead princess". She loves dressing up regardless (She is almost 7) so the mentality is that, well, I am killing 2 birds with one stone...I will be a princees and something scary at the same time. Politics and a 7 yr old...come on....if the person was in their teens, I would have a problem with it. But, if someone wants to protest the war, they are totally allowed to.
Sorry, but this is a non issue...this is fantasy..not politics for a 7 yr old.

Irregardless is a word that many mistakenly believe to be correct usage in formal style, when in fact it is used chiefly in nonstandard speech or casual writing. Coined in the United States in the early 20th century, it has met with a blizzard of condemnation for being an improper yoking of irrespective and regardless and for the logical absurdity of combining the negative ir- prefix and -less suffix in a single term. Although one might reasonably argue that it is no different from words with redundant affixes like debone and unravel, it has been considered a blunder for decades and will probably continue to be so.
Per websters....Hm....Not arguing, just find it intrguing how words are created and then become part of the natural language. It doesn't make sense, really, with the prefix....funny when you really think about it.

This is not about politics or the child for that matter, it is about the poor mother/sister/brother/father who opens the door and sees a visual picture of what may have been the last few seconds of a loved ones life. It is about humanity and compassion, and civility. Wanna protest the war that's oone thing, but to insensitivly go around oblivious of the feelings of others is one of the biggest problems in society right now. It's up to the parent, what kind of a person do they want their kids to be? :( :(
