So we have a pudgy puppy right now and was wondering what you all thought was the most effective/best weight loss food out there. In store or through the vet, it doesn't matter, just need something effective. TIA :)

Actually, puppies shouldn't need weight loss foods. Just good old exercise. Puppies bones are growing, and need nutrition. What kind of dog, and how much does he weigh? All puppies look cute and porky. It's so you don't get so mad at them when they mess in the hosue. lol

Actually, he isn't a puppy, sorry for the confusion, he is somewhere between 6-7 yrs old and was told by a vet that he needs to lose a few pounds. We adopted him from the shelter and tried the Pedigree weight loss and that didn't seem to do the trick. He's part schnauzer and scottie and about 25 lbs. He has a hard time breathing and being real active especially when it's hot and his owner will not go to the vet's and get the food they recommended eventhough I've been nagging him to do it. men... So I just wanted to get some opinions on what others have used and had good success w/. I definitely don't want him to be starving just so he can lose weight but he desperately needs to lose a few lbs. :) I hope that clears up any confusion.

You are right, pudgy puppies are adorable, although I really think any dog is adorable :) LOL my dog has it down that when she gets in trouble to give me those big puppy eyes and I just melt.. LOL I'm so wrapped around her little paws. ;)

There is a dog food called Fit n' Trim. You might want to try that.

I have had great success with substituting canned green beans with some of their light dry food. I have a fat lab. She eats 2 cups of Science Diet Light twice a day. When dieting, I substitute 1 cup of green beans in place of a cup of the food. It is filling to the dog and won't hurt them. My vet told me about this years ago. Good Luck. Oh, broccoli works great too.

I had my dog on that and the vet said it still had alot of calories in it. My dog should weight 50-60 lbs and she weighs almost 80
The vet put her on Proplan, weight management.
We buy the large breed kind since she's part german shep. She gets 2 cups a day and we feed on in the morning and one at night.

We buy the 37lb bag at Petsmart for about $28 and it last for over two months.
the 20lb are around $19. They also have specials all the time. I have a $5.00 of coupon for the next bag.

My sister's dog had a similar weight problem,
vet kept telling sis to give less food
and more exercise.
Dog weighed 80 pounds.

Somebody told her to have the dog's thyroid checked.
Yup! That was it and the dog is now on thyroid medications
and has dropped 15 pounds quickly.

My vet said proplan is the best, and the greenbean substitute also is a great idea. Not sure about the broccolli, that's kind of gassy..LOL nuttin worse than a gassy doggie. ;)
