My son has been diagnosed with reflux (GERD) since he was born basically but none of the meds seem to work. My daughter had it as well but it was different.......as in she was fussy and crying alot where as my son doesn't do that. I was just wondering if anyone has ever had this problem w/a child and is wasn't reflux at all but something else.

How old is he? My daughter had it and took some medication, but hers was due to surgery on her throat,

My nephew had it also and what worked best for him was changing his formular to Neutramageian, he continued taking meds for it, but the drs say that little ones get to a point where the meds dont even help any longer. My nephew is now 18 mths and they have found out that he has many, many food allergies, milk, wheat, any dairy, some others too

he is now 4 1/2 months old and it doesn't seem to be getting much better. We first started with prosobee cause all the other kid had to be on that. The doctor switched him a couple months ago to this stuff called Enfamil A.R. Lipil (for babies who spit up frequently) and it isnt working too great either :( I did try some neutramageian on my own and it was just as bad :( My doctor I know thinks that I am nuts or something because I am always saying it isn't getting better but he isn't just spitting up a little bit but alot more than even may daughter did and by this age she was off meds......my son on the other hand just had his prevaid changed to zantac and still nothing other than he seems to be sleeping a bit better.

see if you can get him tested for allergies, there may be something in the formular that is bothering his tummy. You are NOT nuts and you know your child, I would demand what you feel you need to have done.

I feel for you, I know how it is but I will tell you (even thought you already know) that most babies outgrow this by the time they are 1. Huggs!

Have you tried mixing a little bit of his cereal into his bottles? That might help a little. Both of my younger kids would spit up like crazy and their doctor told me to do put cereal in with their bottles of milk. Just to thicken it a little. It didn't make it all stop but it helped a lot.

Good luck and I hope you can find something that will work for him.

I have gerd/acid reflux. It's when the acid in your stomach backs up into the esophagus and causes heart burn and indegestion. Is that the same problem your baby has? I was given a prescription for Protonix and a list of foods to stay away from. It's very uncomfortable so if that's what your baby has I can only imagine how bad he feels. The poor little guy. :(

my son who is now 9 had SEVERE reflux from the time he was 3 days old. This kid threw up-not spit up, about 30 times a day!!! I did a full oversized load of just his baby clothes everyday. We tried everything. He was on all kinds of different formulas(I breastfed and had to pump and dump while we exprimented). I even had to special order a formula from some place in Chicago, at $45 a can I was kind of glad it didnt work. We tried adding cereal to his bottle...nope it came back up, we did allergy testing..nope it didn't help. I changed my diet 100% and still didn't help. We had to have a test done where he drank milk laced with some meds and they did a sono and watched his stomach empty, everything was fine axcept it confirmed he had reflux. He was on various kind of acid controlers for his first year, they really didn't seem to make a difference. He was also on a med that helped his stomach empty faster, turns out later it was pulled for use in pediatric reflux as it had never been approved for pediatric use and some kids were dieing from it(that freaked me out big time when I heard that on the news). The next step was surgery but we didn't do it as he was still gaining weight at a very good rate, doctor said he over compensated and just ate all the time and was able to mantain a good growth increase each month.

So after all this what did we do?
Put up with it. The doctor thought that once he was up and walking around he would slow down or stop and thats what happpened. when he started walking at a year it really slowed down and by the time he was about 18-20 months it pretty much stopped all together. He still to this day has trouble with reflux but it now shows up as heartburn and we treat it with Pepcid.

I can't belive your doctor is blowing you off. Is your son gaining weight at a healthy rate? He probably thinks you are over reacting to a little spit up  If he doesn't give you any help soon ask to be refered to a pediatric Gastroenterologist, thats what we wound up doing and it was nice not to be blown off.

Good Luck, I know just how you feel.

My sweet granddaughter had it when she was born. She had it so bad she would eat and then out it would come like old faithful at yellowstone. They finally put her on zantac but like you said it helped her sleep better and that was about it. She just didn't complain at all. She was a happy baby and didn't cry or fuss. I was suprised that she had reflux so bad and was so happy. Well she just turned one and it has disappeared completely and she is still a happy kid. Hang in there and it will go away.

oh my goodness you guys are great........at least I am not worried now that little Ethan is going to be doing this everyday of his life. He is gaining weight wonderfully.......right on target for his age :) You know we have been trying to get him into cereals lately but so far he only takes a little bit and sometimes that still comes up :( It just amazes me how he isn't a cranky baby with all that spitting up. We have had to change clothes 4 times so far today and a couple of blankets. He keeps telling me that once he is up and walking it will slow down and now that I have heard it from real parents and grandparents I can believe it.........you guys are a mental life saver for me :)

There is a girl I know and her baby had this bad. I'm not sure if she uses medicine or not but I do know that she puts cereal in his bottle of milk. It is enough to thicken it some but not so thick he can't drink it. I'm not sure but maybe you can buy nipples for the bottles with a little larger hole so the formula with cereal will go through easier.

One thing that cut down on laundry for us was we had our son wear a bib all the time, then I just changed the bib OFTEN( I made a bunch of them that came down a little lower) and we used recieving blankets as burp cloths. Every photo of our son when he was a baby he had those stupid bibs on  but it saved alot of clothes changes.

I want to tell you to try a formula called SMA, and see how he acts with that. It is the closest to mother's milk as you can get. Do you feed him where he is sitting up, so that when you burp him there will be less air in his stomach, and it will hopfully help control the throwing up. I did not have this problem with my kids, this is something new to me, but, I know what acid reflux and gerd is, I have this myself. As for the SMA, my mother gave it to all her 4 children and all of the grandchildren have drank it, it worked out good for us. I am sending you and your son hugs, kisses. Good Luck.

I don't know where you can purchase this but I did find this on it and thought you might like to read up some on it.
http://www.smanutrition.co.uk/products/infantformula.htm
They have like 4 different kinds and even one for babies who bring up alot. May be worth really trying to locate and trying.

SMA Staydown*
What is it?
SMA Staydown is intended for use with babies who suffer from significant reflux or who regularly bring back their feeds. This is extremely common in the early months of life. Most babies grow out of it without longterm effects. If your baby does have this problem you should seek advice from a healthcare professional before changing feeds.

SMA Staydown infant formula
SMA Staydown is a nutritionally complete infant formula that has been thickened with an easily digestible pre-cooked cornstarch in order to help it to settle in the stomach. It provides appropriate reflux management as recommended by key medical bodies and contains important nutrients such as beta-carotene and selenium as well as nucleotides

Sorry didn't realize it was the UK. I have looked online for this formula here in the states and so far haven't found it but did come across this.

http://www.keepkidshealthy.com/infant/baby_formula.html
# Store Brand Formula, like from Albertsons (Baby Basics), Target (Healthy Baby), and Wal-mart (Parent's Choice), are made by Wyeth Nutrition and are based on the old SMA formula. They provide a 'nutritionally complete, sensibly priced formula option' for parents.

They may not market it anymore. If you can't find it or just want to call the manufactor who made it and see what they can tell you. I believe Wyeth is the manufactor.
I hope you can find it though the one sounds like it would be good for your little one.

thank you so much........do you know where I can find the formula SMA? Being as we live in a very rural area there are lots of things that I can't find.Sorry i took so long to get back to you. I have read all of the replies, and visited the webpage that Eyore found. I was thinking about asking the WIC, people here in the states, if they know anything about it and where to find it. I do know that SMA, was hard to find when I was giving it to my own sons. I'll do some calling around next week and come back and let you know what I found out. Sorry, that it is so hard too find.
