I am going through our bills, looking at ways to save some money, and I am wondering about our health insurance. Hubby gets it through his work. It is "United Health Care" . We are paying $180 out of each paycheck for the three of us. Does that seem ridiculously high to anyone else? Does anyone have any suggestions for other insurance we might be able to buy privately for a more reasonable price?

Does that include eye dental and prescription? My husband pays 300 a month and we only get doctor and prescription.

Honestly, you may not be able to get private insurance to cover your famil depending on your history. They are very picky and also expensive. I know that some will cancel after paying for an operation or something. Also, you may not realize that his employer is paying part of the premiums so to get comparable coverage, it may be astronomical. And, in my experience, most places have an "open enrollment" period where you can join or drop, but thats the only time. Where I used to work it was during the month of October.
I know some people do not care for United Healthcare but I LOVED it and would really like to have it back.

I think you are getting a bargain compared to what a lot of people pay.

You have to take into account what your copay is and what all is covered under your current plan. I think you are paying an average amount for insurance.

I'm paying over $350 a month just for me......
And that doesn't include vision or dental.

I agree, for two adults and a child, you are getting a good deal... we pay 112 every paycheck for the two of us and that is actually mostly on me... employees usually get it at a lower price than they do for spouse and children. Or around here they do.

I have United health and my d/h pays 35.00 a week for a family. Our copay is 15.00 for dr. and 50 for er visit unless they admitt us then no copay, Our meds are differat any where from 10.00 to 25.00 depeding on the meds. This also includes eye (but isn't very good on that). It doesn't includ dentist that is 5 or 10 a week for that. So that is about 180.00 a month for our insurance.

my insurance is paid by my employer but it would cost me $1200.00 a month to have hubby and kids on it and thats just medical, no dental or eye. needless to say I can't afford it. We get hubby's privatly for $285 a month and the kids are on State subsidised health insurance.

You have a bargain. If you tried to get health care coverage privately you would probably pay close to twice that and keep in mind that if you use it, your rates go up. My insurance is also paid by my employer but it would cost me over $500 to pay for it myself. I have a decent prescription plan. If not, I couldn't afford the meds I have to take on a daily basis.
Be grateful that it's that cheap. It could be much, much worse.

My husband's and my policy is 500 dollars a month, with prescription, vision and copays. Thank God we were able to talk his boss into paying half the bill each month!

That's a bargain if it includes vision and dental. My employer pays more than that for my policy and I'm the only one covered.
I too LOVED United when I had through work.

Husband works for the city. $180 every pay day(every2 wks). Includes vision, rx's(5,15,35). Almost every rx is a $35 copay. They only offer 1 ins co. I think that stinks!

My husband works for the city too. He pays I think 35.00 a pay check whick is every week. The city pays the rest. And I can choose from about 6 plans. I am very grateful to have it. Before this 8 years ago he worked for a medical company and was paying close to 400.00 a month for a family plan...He is also in the union and pays union duesof 12.00 a pay check but we get free dental and free vision. So I feel very lucky and very blessed that he got this job and he loves his job too. OH he is a EMW.. Enviromental Maintience worker. He cleans the city parks and makes the baseball fields look nice.....
BTW
I work for the school system here but only work 3 hrs a day as a lunch lady. But any employee who works 4 hrs a day gets free medical for you and family.. So check into your school system.
My gilrfriend husbands has his own plumbing business and was paying so much for insurance she went to work for the schoool system and now they save a bundle on insurance....... Just a bit of info incase it can help any one. Also I have the same days off as my kids .....Now thats a big plus ....

sounds like you have an excellent plan.
My hubbys job offeres insurance for family and it is 395.00 per week and that is with the company paying 40%, we are on state insurance right now so we don't have to worry, but come renewal time you know we will be worried.
Okay as far as other insurances go, we bought private insurance when we moved to OH a few years ago, hubby had no job and we needed to have insurance. We paid 140.00 per week for it, it had no co pays, we paid every dr visit and full for perscription, but in case of an emergency we would be covered. It was a ton of money for nothing.

It includes health and prescription. He pays extra for vision and for dental. Forgot to mention that he is paid every other Friday, so that is an average of $360/month, right? (More if he has 3 paydays in a month). Dang, I was hoping we could figure out a way to save some money. We are about broke and it's rather depressing to get his paycheck and have it not be enough to make even one bill payment when we've got 3 or 4 waiting for money, y'know?

Not all school systems have this good of benifits. I work full time at a school district in Illinois and like I said it would cost me $1200 a month for my family. Right now they pay 100 % of mine but just put a cap on it this year of $360 so next year when rates go up I will have to kick in some myself. :(

At my job singles pay $150 a month and families around $750. That covers only medical, scripts (10, 20 and 50), doctor/specialist visits (15, 20) and hospitalizations/ER. Everything else medical is free although my insurance is starting to get picky on which prescriptions they will pay for.
