Cruise Down on Brooke's Anti-Depressants

Tom rails against drugs, pushes vitamins; plus, news on Renée, Gwyneth & Chris, Angelina & Brad and more ...

May 23, 2005

Has Tom Cruise received a medical degree in his spare time? The megastar is openly questioning the treatment Brooke Shields received for her crippling postpartum depression, a struggle she details in her new memoir, "Down Came the Rain."

Tom, sticking close to Scientology's anti-psychiatry party line, believes Shields, despite experiencing what she has described as suicidal thoughts, should have avoided taking the anti-depressant drug Paxil following the birth of her daughter, Rowan, in 2003.

"These drugs are dangerous. I have actually helped people come off," Cruise proselytizes, er, says, in an interview with Access Hollywood set to air Thursday (via the New York Daily News). "When you talk about postpartum, you can take people today, women, and what you do is you use vitamins."

According to Dr. Tom, "There is a hormonal thing that is going on, scientifically, you can prove that. But when you talk about emotional, chemical imbalances in people, there is no science behind that. You can use vitamins to help a woman through those things."

(And somewhere, a "War of the Worlds" marketing exec smacks his forehead and tries to convince himself that moms really won't comprise too much of the movie's opening weekend audience.)

The actor, who made his film debut in the 1981 Shields clunker "Endless Love," adds, "Here is a woman, and I care about Brooke Shields because I think she is an incredibly talented woman -- you look at, where has her career gone?"

Ouch.

Walk a mile in the shoes of a postpartum depression woman before you throw her Paxil out. I am so sick of listening to stars tell me how to live my life, who to vote for, what cause is important to them, and about their religion. Shut up, read your script and leave me alone. This is the very reason I choose not to line the pockets of stars with my movie dollars anymore. If your activism overshadows your job, I don't want to listen to you anymore. And Hollywood wants to know why movie profits keep going down. People are fed up with the stars thinking their voice, their cause, their religion and their choices are so much more important than everyone elses.

All the Scientologist actors out there. Kirstie Alley got off drugs using it but now she is having a weight problem. Makes me think she never really found out how to control her urges with Scientilogy that therapy would have taught her.

She's from Wichita and she comes here and opens a Scientology place with John Travolta and his wife along with other celebs supporting it. They came here to cut the ribbon and look around.

Now why don't you go to the psychiatry place here where the doctors are doing research on the brain and how the meds are helping people really get well? They are on the cutting edge of it. The Menniger foundation is in Topeka. The were the first to reallly help people with mental and hormonal illnesses to get well.

Half the things stars say they don't even understand, they have a guy that gets paid a lot of money to write up a nice little paragraph and the stars make the dumbest speeches about politics and crap and pretend like they know what the hell they're talking about. Whats next, will they stop the meds you get during labor because they "don't really help" hey lets take vitamins during labor that'll help!

I agree that a lot of these actors/stars should just stick to reading scripts.

I am sure glad I am not the only person who thought he should go soak his head. I swear, UNTIL he gets a uterus, gives birth, has periods, has PMS and does everything a woman does, he needs to keep his mouth SHUT!

I think if yall would take a closer look at scientology (these ppl believe they can cure you of anything by litterally putting a can to your head and turning on a machine) that you would better understand why he says the things he does. It would be wrong of me to say his beliefs are wrong, despite what I feel about them... it just happens to be one of those things that they believe... just like some religions don't believe in doctors or medicine at all... it doesn't make what he said right at all... but it makes understanding why he would say such a thing easier to comprehend.

I understand that it is part of his religious beliefs but I honestly think that he would feel differently if he spent a day or two with me without my anti-depressants. I'll take the drugs over hearing voices and suicidal thoughts any day.

Unfortunately, that's how Scientologists believe. The scary part is, they're out there professing their beliefs to people who REALLY need medication. I hope for his sake he never has to go through any mental problems. These people are dangerous in their belief on this, because they influence so many other people.

As I said, despite his beliefs, it doesn't make him right... it just makes understanding WHY he would say such a thing easier... I, too, take antidepressants and I would not be w/out them... but just like any religion, understanding why someone would say something is key before just throwing them to the dogs.

Good Lord! They're actors! It's just another freaking job. I just don't understand why people get so gaga over them and so emotional. I just wish folks would act that enthusiastic about veterans! They are like sports superstars- overpaid and with big mouths and tiny brains. I tell you what-when Tiny Tom gives birth I might listen to his opinion but until then he is simply hired to entertain me. I also usually don't diss other religions but Scientology was invented by a very bad Sci Fi writer.

I tend to agree with their thinking to a certain degree. Not scientologists but the fact that people are being medicated way more than is needed. Instead of teaching people how to deal with things (both physically and mentally doctors would rather throw a pill at it. Partially because the patient wants immediate results and partly because they are pressured to hock pills for the manufacturers. Now that doesn't mean that there are some people out there who really do need the medicines but there are a lot of them out there useing the pills as a crutch so they don't have to deal with stuff. :(

Brooke & Tom's War of the Words
June 3, 2005

Brooke Shields has officially engaged with Tom Cruise in what is fast becoming a celebrity war of the words.

After Cruise criticized Shields' use of antidepressants as "irresponsible" during an interview with Access Hollywood last week, Shields has suggested the leading man keep his opinions to himself. "Tom Cruise's comments are irresponsible and dangerous," Shields said in London last week. "Tom should stick to saving the world from aliens and let women who are experiencing postpartum depression decide what treatment options are best for them."

Shields recently published Down Came the Rain, a personal chronicle of her struggle with depression following the 2003 birth of her daughter, Rowan. The memoir delves into the actress' use of Paxil as a form of treatment for her condition and is meant to inspire other women to seek help. "Don't be ashamed, and don't disregard what you are feeling," Shields writes in the book. "I recovered only because I got help."

The actress has said she is currently in the process of weaning herself from the drug in order to try for a second child with husband Chris Henchy.

However, as a dedicated follower of Scientology, Cruise is of the belief that mind-altering medications of any kind are "dangerous" and that women should treat conditions such as postpartum depression with "vitamins." Hence his stamp of disapproval on Shields' choice to use Paxil and to discuss that choice in her memoir.

"When you talk about postpartum, you can take people today, women, and what you do is you use vitamins. There is a hormonal thing that is going on, scientifically, you can prove that. But when you talk about emotional, chemical imbalances in people, there is no science behind that," the actor told Access Hollywood.

"When someone says [medication] has helped them, it is to cope, it didn't cure anything. There is no science. There is nothing that can cure them whatsoever," Cruise said.

Cruise went on to make a not-so-subtle jab at the former Suddenly Susan star's professional life. "I care about Brooke Shields because I think she is an incredibly talented women, [but] look at where her career has gone."

Ouch. True, Shields' latest pilot, New Car Smell, was recently passed over by Fox, but the actress has been earning positive reviews in the role of Roxie Hart in the London theater production of Chicago.

Meanwhile, as anyone not living under a rock knows by now, Cruise's latest project, Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds, is scheduled to open June 29. Though one would expect Cruise to become increasingly visible as the film's premiere date approaches, it turns out the public may actually see less of the actor than in recent weeks.

Paramount and DreamWorks have cut out the usual promotional press junket in favor of a smaller number of "preselected interview sessions," DreamWorks exec Martin Levy told the New York Times in an article published Thursday. Speculation exists that Cruise's increasing passion for discussing both his religious beliefs and his feelings for new girlfriend Katie Holmes led to the decision to cut back on his promotional appearances.

Meanwhile, there's talk that Paramount is also considering pulling the plug on Mission: Impossible 3 due to the project's swelling budget.

Levy admitted that studio executives had expressed concern over Cruise's well-publicized, erratic May 23 appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, during which Cruise bounced around the room, on and off furniture, sank to the floor and repeatedly announced his love for Holmes. (At least we can rule out mind-altering drugs.)

"You can have so much attention on a particular issue that maybe the movie doesn't get as much attention as it might," Levy told the Times of the appearance. "It's the topic of conversation for many reasons."

However, Levy denied that the choice to scrap the press junket had anything to do with Cruise, rather it was made because the movie had already received sufficient promotion.

WRONG---now he is a doctor.

Actors trying to be politicians and now doctors. When will the learn to just keep it to themselves. He looked and acted like he is on something himself on Oprah. Just from the little I saw, I couldn't watch the whole thing. YUCK.

Maybe we should remind Tom that he's not as good an actor as his ex-wife is an actress. He tends to have big budget films but he will never be a Jeremy Irons or Tom Hanks, or Russell Crowe. Those are actors. Tom just does variations on Tom.

Ooooooooooooooooo.......VERY good point!

And, btw, I do NOT care what his religion is, he could worship ants for all I care, BUT he has no business saying what ANY woman should or shouldnt do with her body UNTIL he has a womans body and knows what "she" experiences. To me its the exact same principle that had male doctors patting women on the shoulder and saying "Its all in your head" for the last million years no matter the complaint.

I'm not sure if this was directed at me... but I'll say it again... I was NOT saying what he said was ok... I only said knowing what his beliefs are make it easier to understand why he'd say something so stupid.

Looks like all that "attititude is coming back on him .....

Paramount Dumps Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise has been unceremoniously dumped by his Paramount studio partners for his sofa-jumping antics on TV. Paramount boss Sumner Redstone has ended his company's 14-year relationship with Cruise/Wagner Productions because he no longer wants to be associated with Tom.

Redstone told The Wall Street Journal he believes Cruise's bizarre antics on TV shows like Oprah and Today had a negative effect on the box office take of Paramount's 2005 summer blockbuster 'War Of The Worlds.' He was quoted, "As much as we like him personally, we thought it was wrong to renew his deal... His recent conduct has not been acceptable to Paramount."

I wonder what he would do if his wife got post partem depression after their next baby. I don't want her to get it but until he sees someone he knows go through it and how it really affects them he'll keep talking about something he knows nothing about. It's like when someone has serious depression and someone just tells them to snap out of it. I think people can really be insensitive sometimes.

Two things:
1) If Tom Cruise is such a great actor then why can't he act normal?

2) There is a gay porn magazine called Paree that Tom did some pics for early in his career. He sues people who say he is gay but SO DID LIBERACE!!! and HE won too.

Just another case of a star stating his opinion when they should keep it to themselves. They're all over the television, radio, magazines for heaven's sake.

Ever heard of:

If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all?

Tom and Mel should keep opinions to themselves. I don't feel he's acting at all.
The way he came down on Brooke Shields was humiliating.

I don't think this will actually hurt his career. Basically he found a way to get out of a contract and now he can do his own thing. Just wondering ... if Tom and Mel shut up does that mean Susan Sarandon and George Clooney will crawl back under the rock they keep popping out of? If so I think it's a fair trade. ;)

Gee-Tom Cruise and the Chixie Dicks(sic). Peas-in-a-pod :D Both opened their mouths and shot their careers. Both deserved it, too. I will say, though-Tom's "doctoring" assinine comment was worse.

Since the day he attacked Brooke Shields and all other women who have suffered PPD he has not had one cent of my money for either a movie ticket or a movie purchase or a movie rental or even my eyes on advertising when his movies are being shown on commercial television.

Tom states

"When someone says [medication] has helped them, it is to cope, it didn't cure anything. There is no science. There is nothing that can cure them whatsoever," Cruise said.

And I say "no sh!t Sherlock-INCLUDING vitamins" The medication for things like this are all to "cope", not to cure.

His behavior has become increasingly suggestive of either drugs/alcohol or something. He needs help.
