Yep, I've gotta say, I'd be completely ripped about this, too. Who care's if he can't sit still for the whole thing...most Kindergartners can't anyway. That's out-and-out discrimination and completely wrong.

That really bites!!!!!!! Why call everyone and tell them to cancel, when all of you can give him a graduation party, with the trophy and all. It would still turn out to be for his graduation. Just giving you an idea. (((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((( you and your son))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

sounds to me like a lawsuit in the making. That is pure discrimination if you ask me.

I agree with Valena, give him his own party and celebrate his success yourself.

Contact news stations, as well as the school board. If your son met all the requirement to graduate with his class, then it is against the Americans with Disabilities act to exclude him from the ceremonies. The must make accomodations for him. You should be able to find graduation stuff around somewhere, and the school should me made to move heaven and earth to get him one. I am also the parent of a special needs student, and you can bet I would raise cain in order to ensure my son's inclusion. Go get 'em Mom!

Thats ridiculous, is your son not a student anymore because he's special needs?? Poor thing has a right to take part in the parties and ceremonies too! Keep fighting until they let him take part. Their excuses are ridiculous in my opinion.

Are there other special needs parents you can get together?

Sounds like you need to change schools.

Dosen't he attend public school? There was a huge write up about the K graduation of special needs kids in it and it listed every public school in OKC.

You should really get in touch with the groups that I sent you info on, as you could really use some advocacy.

i have no idea but i will be finding out tomorrow. I plan to spend the day with dallas at school tomorrow so I can talk to the parents when they come to pick up their children.

This is discrimination against your child BIGTIME, call the news, call the american disability activists, call a lawyer, that is SO not fair that your child not be allowed to graduate with his classmates, he did the work, he passed...why isnt he included? Please PLMK me your address and I will send a congradulations card for graduating or something cute like that, he deserves the recognition.

P.S I was a peer tutor in high school, two children from my class to gradute were special needs and THEY were included in the ceremony, that is bull hockey!

I e-mailed Sandy Garrett (state superintendent) about your post. If you PM me I will hook you up with her. Shes my BIL's neighbor, so we are friendly lol. Shes appalled that this would happen and wants some information from you so she can help.

Ohh boy, they have no idea what they have done. The school has messed up royally and I am mad about it for you and right along with you. You don't go messing around with a child of a fellow BBS family member....NO NO NO!

Catrina, if you don't mind, send me the email address of the principal if you can get it, or the school address. I would love to write them a little letter telling them what I think of this. I am sure that many others here would do the same thing.

When is the graduation set for? There may not be time enough to send snail mail, so I was thinking that an email address of the principal or better yet, the school board would be faster.

Bless your heart, I feel terrible about this. How dare they mess with your beautiful little guy. I can't believe that they would attempt to deny him a graduation. He has earned it! Maybe it is a good thing that he will be going to another school next year, after pulling this, they don't deserve to have him in their school anyway!

Hugs to you and your beautiful little boy.

Andrea

This also sounds like an ACLU fight. If they are concerned about his ability to sit still why not have mom on the other side of the stage to gather their kids up. Someone needs to make a noise that can't be stopped.

This is totally wrong and I do believe, against the law as a discriminatory act by the school system.

My nephew has CP, is in a wc and just loved by everyone at school. He is 19, but will be in school until he is 21. He had the official graduation ceremony from h.s. last June and I was a proud Aunt to be able to attend. (My son, another nephew, and this young man, all 3 cousins graduated from different h.s. in 2004.)
They went by homeroom classes and his class went first. We were very, very proud.
It does not matter that my nephew was not the #1 in his entire graduating class.

He met his school goals for graduation, and we all cheered as loud as ever.

Sending you warm hugs, dear.

Kick Butt At Kindergarten!

Your sweet son deserves this recognition also.

I wanted to add that at the other nephew's graduation,
one of the kids in the special classes (I don't recall what her medical diagnosis was)
had written a beautiful poem about the school & all the friends graduating.

She was unable to read it, but was on stage when it was read
by her teacher.
That was very moving.

I'm really angry at your school with the graduation issue.

Hey, I am from Moore! glad to see some okie neighbors!

Call Brad Edwards, I bet he will be in your corner! This wouldnt happen to be Bryant Elementary would it? My little brother (he is now 12)went there, and I could start a whole forum on the mess that they call a school. Good for you for standing up for your child. Sometimes it seems that there arent enough parents willing to stand up and fight for their kids.

I pity the principal.

Tuesday as in tomorrow! They can go to a store and pick up the needed trophy and cap and gown and you should not have to pay.

My goodness, this is the 21st century they need to catch up. I remember in the early 1970s we had a blind girl, Lynn, in school. She used a seeing stick and carried a brail typewriter. The teachers had to use a translator in order to grade her papers. Some learned how to read braile and she walked with the rest of the class. This was a public grade school a she went on to public high school.

I also was a volunteer at the school pre-K program and we had many disabled and handicapped children. One was on a gurney type bed and some in wheel chairs, some walkers, some arm brace crutches, etc. The one thing that ws great about this was that the children learned that some kids have problems or challenges but still are just like those that dont. We liked to celebrate our differences and build on our similarities. Ceremonies were for all to participate in because each child had earned and deserved it. We also wanted them to feel that they belonged, because they did belong.

I would also check out where they chose to transfer him and check out the other school. If it is better fine. If not or the travel time is too long or harsh, you need to fight that too.

Keep us posted and I hope he is allowed to recieve his well earned recognition.

Me :p

I'm glad your son gets to graduate, but it's a shame they had to p*ss you (and everyone else on BBS) off! That school would have a lot of angry emails, and an angry mob of BBSers that could make the trip!

What was bad about not letting your son graduate is it is teaching other children that it is ok to discrimanate because you are different. They say it starts in the home, well in OK it starts in School. I hope that you do contact someone that can change this for future kids. No other parent should have to go thru what you went thru. It is unfair. Have fun tomorrow

I'm really glad to hear he gets to graduate. I myself have a special needs child and she attends a special school (public) for kids such as herself and what frustrates me is they don't have picture day for this school only out of all the schools in this city. They do do a yearbook every year with digital cam photos of the kids in B&W but it's not the same. Thankfully they've decided to integrate the children with the regular public schools for this upcoming fall so then she can be a part of a normal school. The education system really needs to change!!

I'm so glad your son and you get to participate in the graduation. We didn't have anything like this when I graduated kindergarten so that has to be exciting for him and you! That's really too bad that the teacher wasn't all that nice when it was the school that was discriminating against your son and many others. Can't wait to see the pictures!!! :D

I'm so glad your son gets to graduate with the class as well. I can't believe they made such a big deal about it. Whatever happened to "No child left behind." Dallas deserves all the recognition if not more as the other kids, as he had to work harder to get it. I'm so glad you fought to get this for him, but sad that you even had to. Give him a big hug for us and tell him how proud we all are of him. (((((((((((((Dallas)))))))))))))))))
