Well.. I am just beside myself... we got a virus. It's totally disrupted everythign we've known in the computer. We had Norton's but that didn't detect it. We did four seperate searches w/ those free download scans and all showed that we had a virus. It was suggested that we uninstall Norton's and then re-install and update it and that should help, well it didn't. We ended up getting ZoneAlarm and had to uninstall Norton's (again) and this time it didn't go so easy. The computer kept crashing and WOULD NOT uninstall it. My roommate went through and had to manually delete it off. We got ZoneAlarm and SpySweeper installed and after zonealarm was installed we lost our microsoft office programs (excel, word, etc) and when we go to the add/remove programs, those are all gone except for zonealarm now. :( When scanned it shows we have two viruses but it is unable to remove them. I have searched and searched and cannot find them. This is the info it gives us:
Archive
Win32.startpage.oj
C:\_RESTORE/ARCHIVE\FS1121.CAB>AOO77252.CPY

AND

Archive
Win32.startpage.oj
C:\_RESTORE/ARCHIVE\FS1121.CAB>AOO77254.CPY

Zonealarm goes bonkers when I come here. I am unable to sign into some of my accts like Gmail or Ebay or into my cell phone account. And when I post something it takes forever and seems like it goes into limbo for awhile...

I downloaded AdwareAlert last night and had it scan and it shows we have 69 infections... do these just show you have infections UNTIL you buy them and then you are fine?? Why aren't the ones we have catching these if they are there?

Does anyone know what we can do (besides taking it to the comp repair shop and pay out the nose) to get our computer back to normal? I just want to cry right now and throw this computer out the window. :( :(

*sigh* Please... any help... I want the computer that we used to have back.

That is weird bc our Norton's did an update on this virus...maybe you didn't update or didn't in time.

I always use the Symantec site for the free fix it tools. Have you tried them?

Good luck. That really does suck and I am sorry you got this virus =(

If we did this, what would we need to know? Like is there any special steps we need to take?

Stacey, thanks for the suggestion to Symantec. I didn't see the one we have listed their though. :( I thought I saw it there a few days ago, when I was doing a search, but now I can't find it.. *sigh* We run Norton's quite often, so I don't know why it didn't catch it. Apparantly Norton's been known to let viruses slip in and it seems that is what must have happened and then it just went willy nilly on the comp. :( UGH it's just such a mess!

btw what part of Iowa are you in? I am originally from the Iowa City area. :)

go to the panda site, this place will do a free scan and fix any virus it finds. this is an awesome site for computer viruses. i can't remember the web address but do a search on yahoo or where ever and go there, you will need to download a small utility to run the scan, harmless, trust me this site will find and eliminate any virus.

adaware will remove it if its a hijacked page(start page) which is considered a pest/virus adaware should remove it mine does.and I have the free edition if not you can find where it is in the registry and delete it there. go to run then type regedit and then look for find and type it in.this will bring it up and then you should be able to delete it.if not sure how ask someone who knows how. then restart the pc.

Thanks for the suggestion. I am unable to install this though since there is still some Norton Antivirus files on the computer. I am unable to find them and it's not in my add/remove files (nothing is there except the new stuff that was just added, it deleted ALL of them) UGH!

I'm guessing the best thing to do would be to clear the whole system and start from scratch. I'm so sick of this!
