UUUGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!

For the past 3-5 days my McAffee Virus scan has been popping up these messages that "923.exe" and other numbers with the extension .exe have been trying to access the internet. Well McAffee has been blocking them & I was thinking "what the heck is going on". I thought some of the kids games were trying to update.

Well today since I had a little time I went in & started looking. I got into the windows folder & found a folder called "Prefetch"- It was FULL of all these .exe programs that have been trying to access the internet !!!!

I have no idea where it came from , but if anyone finds it in their computer -- DUMP THE FOLDER !!!!

So it's safe to delete everything that's stored in the prefetch folder? If so I'm going to do that now.

google searched and found this..
You might well wonder about files that appear seemingly without reason, especially when they're directly related to executable programs on your disk. Such files could be part of some scheme to run malicious code instead of those trusted programs, but don't worry, they're not. The Prefetch folder is used by Windows XP to speed the boot process. Windows XP records information about each program that launches at boot and uses that information to boot faster the next time. Because multiple files might have the same name, it appends a "hash" of the file's location. That's the odd string of numbers and letters between the filename and the .pf extension.

This folder may accumulate useless junk, especially if you change your configuration a lot. There's no harm in emptying it. Simply delete all the files in that folder; Windows will rebuild it as needed.

So this is not really where the trojans are coming from? Is this just honest program activity? If windows just rebuilds it why delete it to start with? Thanks for the help.

that would be correct, you need to search your computer for the original location of the trojan files that you are finding in prefetch.

There really is no point in deleting... they aren't the source of viruses and they just come right back... it won't hurt, but it is completely unnecessary.

So how can we search for trojans? Please advise.

The only program that picked up trojans on my computer so far is the Yahoo anti spy. It comes with the yahoo search bar. AVG, Avast,spy-bot and Ad-aware never picked it up. I ran the anti spy and it was one of the first things it picked up.

I think I misread what you posted. I thought you were having trouble removing trojans.

I use spybot, adaware, avg, and I have the yahoo anti spy. I also use: http://www.spywareguide.com/txt_onlinescan.html . It picks up a bunch of the activeX crap that messes up puters. You might give it a go through also, if you don't use that one.

Careful though, it does pick up stuff that is labeled bad, like wild tangent and kazaa. I use both of those for specific programs, and deleting me got me in trouble, but it gives you the choice of if you want to remove something or not.

I want to know first if I have any infecting my machine. I do have McAfee VirusScan installed, but I am not sure if this detects those or not.

You might want to run the Yahoo anti spy. Surprisingly that's the only program that picked up trojans on my computer.
