Class Dissection Of Live Dog Outrages Parents, Students
Student: 'It Just Makes Me Sick...'

A biology class lesson in Gunnison, Utah involving the dissection of a live dog has outraged some parents and students, according to a report.
"I thought that it would be just really a good experience if they could see the digestive system in the living animal," Biology teacher Doug Bierregaard said.
Biology teacher Doug Bjerregaard, who is a substitute teacher at Gunnison Valley High School, wanted his students to see how the digestive system of a dog worked.

Bjerregaard made arrangements for his students to be a part of a dissection of a dog that was still alive.
The dog was still alive, but the teacher said it was sedated before the dissection began.
With the students watching, the sedated dog's digestive system was removed.
"It just makes me sick and I don't think this should go on anywhere and nobody's learning from it," student Sierra Sears said.
The teacher said the lesson would allow students to see the organs actually working.
"I thought that it would be just really a good experience if they could see the digestive system in the living animal," Bierregaard said.
The school's principal, Kirk Anderson, said notifications went to parents explaining the dog was going to be euthanized and that the experiment would be done with the dog's organs still functioning.
The teacher is standing by his decision and calls it the ultimate educational experience.
Principal Anderson said he supports the lesson and it will be allowed to continue because the students are learning.
The dog used in the experiment was going to be euthanized despite the class project.

Apparently the parents either did not understand the permission slips or did not read them because some had to sign it. They are at fault too (of course not nearly as much as the teacher) for allowing their children to see that disgusting act.

I saw this on the news last night(we get salt lake channels) and the way I understood it the kids didn't even know about it until the day they did it, so I don't think the parents could have known.
I was so furious when I saw this story, if it happened to my kids the teacher would seriously reget it.

Disgusting! I just took a college Bio and my teacher would not have us euthanise and dissect a frog because he said it was not necessary for our course of study. Some of his other classes do and that is fine with him, but he will not do it if it is not important to our education. If we were nursing students or pre med that would be one thing, but not for a general course of study. HORRENDOUS! Dispicable. Sounds like someone who just enjoys torturing animals to me. I WOULD NEVER ALLOW MY SON TO TAKE PART IN DISSECTING A DOG IN SCHOOL. NOT DEAD EVEN. There is no need for it. You can learn about the inside of an animal from a book or video and even online. Dissections do not need to take place for school children.

It did not say they signed a permission slip, but they apparently did not read their childrens letters that get sent home or they did not care.

We did a fresh stillborne calf in our HS Biology class but to do something like this would be blatently against the law even if it weren't against school policy. He should be punished.

I am totally repulsed!!! I know there is no way my son would have sat through that. He would have raised a huge stink. I can't imagine what this teacher was thinking nor can I imagine the kids in his class not saying something, certainly this was discussed in class by the teacher before the day of the dissection. I am just sickened over this. Jeffery Dalmer (sp?) started out with road kill!!!

Oh I didn't see that in the article, sorry. :o I was just going by what I heard on the news last night, it didn't sound like the parents or kids new about it.

That's okay :) Sorry if I sounded like a jerk, it just peed me off that the parents didn't pay more attention as well.

Medical students studying (expired) cadavers is one thing because they are studying advanced medicine in order to properly care for human patients.
High school students, however, are learning basic anatomy.
In my h.s. biology we dissected dead crawfish, worms, sharks, and the like...all dead.
In my college biology class we dissected a dead cat for an entire semester, every Friday.
Those h.s. kids do NOT need to see how a dog's
digestive system works in 'real life action.'
Excuse me, if it was removed from the sedated dog,
and no longer attached to the vital organs
blood is not circulating,
digestive juices are not being secreted,
bowels parastalysis is not longer functioning
because this dog is no longer alive.
What were the main objectives and goals listed
for this particular assignment?
One sick-o substitute teacher + one sick-o principal = a crock of stool.
(Ya'll know exactly what I mean here.)
What did the substitute teacher feel they would find
in the small intestine and large intestine of this now dead dog?
My answer (without even looking - duh) would be
a crock of stool.
Why not just go to the boys' restroom and assess what is in
each of the toilets?
The superintendent & school board need to fire 2 sick-o people.

Did ya'll look at the picture of that substitute teacher?
He just plain looks like a nut.
If this was such the 'ultimate learning experience,' according
to the substitute teacher....why not bring in a larger animal
for more viewing purposes?
A cow,
a horse,
an elephant.
Of course, I am only replying 'tongue in cheek' here.
(Don't really mean it!!!!)
Any way you look at it the results are a 'crock of stool!'

Dog's vivisection a hard lesson for schoolgirls
Reuters News Service
SALT LAKE CITY - A Utah high school expressed regret Thursday for the vivisection of a stray dog as part of a biology lesson.
Some parents and students complained after a substitute biology teacher at Gunnison Valley High School took eight girls, ages 16 and 17, to a local veterinary clinic Tuesday to watch abdominal dissection on a dog under general anesthetic. The lesson was aimed at teaching about the digestive system.
"It just makes me sick and I don't think this should go on anywhere and nobody is learning from it," student Sierra Sears told a TV station.
"This shouldn't happen again. Our schools will not participate in this again," said Donald Hill, assistant superintendent of the South Sanpete School District. "We don't condone this."
However, veterinarian Tom Anderson said the incident, reported in local television and newspapers, had been blown out of proportion.
"It was about a three-minute procedure involving abdominal surgery. It was done under general anesthetic. It was an aggressive and abandoned dog. It was not fit to be adopted," Anderson said. The dog was put to sleep after the procedure.
The school said permission had been obtained from parents and that two students had opted out of the visit.

No problem you didn't sound like a jerk :) Maybe I misunderstood the news story. And I agree that the parents should have been paying more attention. The whole thing is just disgusting.
