Several years back I went on a 800-1200 cal low fat diet and it took me two years but I lost 114 lbs. I did this with the help of a dr. who gave me diet pills, I have low thyroid but I went faithfully to have the testing done and get myself on the right dosage. The doctor herself was overweight (though not as much as I had been) I had finally gotten down to my recommended weight and then all of a sudden nothing worked it was right after I had been to see her so I thought something was wrong with the diet pills, same prescription. I tried hard but eventually gained all of that weight back and more. Yesterday I went to a different dr. who works where the other dr. used to (I have been going to her but she is too far away and I had no ride) and so he had my old records. I went there because I was so tired and weak and so he ran a few tests and I mentioned my thyroid and handed him the bottle with my prescription on it. He could not believe I was on such a low dose. I told him no I had always been on a high dose. He went back through the records my former dr. had steadily cut my thyroid medicine from the time I had lost all the weight and had not told me. He looked at the records just before she cut my meds and said I was doing just fine on the old dosage the same one I had been on while losing the weight but the minute I lost it all she cut my thyroid meds, thats why I have steadily gained all the weight back. The only reason I can think of that she would do this would be jealousy and that is crazy but it is just as crazy as a dr. cutting that particular drug for no reason and then on top of that not telling me. Right now I am so angry anyone who knows how hard it is to lose weight anyway but it is doubly hard for someone with low thyroid problems.

Did you not read the prescription bottle and notice the dose was wrong? I ALWAYS look at it when I get a new bottle.

I agree!
I have been taking thyroid medicine for 20 yrs & always check the dosage. The dr & I always discuss how the dosage is going for me & how I've been feeling on it. I go every 6-12 months for blood test.
How could she steadily cut the dosage down & you not know? You usually have to get a new prescription every time the dosage is changed?
She had changed it from mg. to mcg and I asked her about it and she said it was the same dosage just a different way of writing it so I did not think too much about it, like I said she was my dr. and I trusted her especially since she had stressed to me over and over how important it was to keep a check on it. Plus the pharmacy gave me generic when they would be out of the name brand script but since it was the same thing I did not think too much about it, so it was no big deal to get a different colored pill, I just glanced at it to notice most of the time if it was the correct med not dosage. I had no reason to think anyone would do this to me or anyone else. She even suggested we check my thyroid again to make sure that my meds did not need increasing. But she had steadily been decreasing it. As it was I was already bothered to insanity I am not a details person (once had a test that said this was a weak point of mine) so for two years I had read every label kept up with every bite I put in my mouth counting calories and fat gm so I just never thought I would have to worry about my meds, thats what I was paying her for. Perhaps I should have paid more attention but i really did not think it was neccessary.

Is this person still practicing medicine? I would try to get copies of all my medical record and prescriptions from the pharmacist and have her reported to the medical board.
What she did is definately unethical.

I could probably get my records from the clinic she was at, until yesterday I would have said she was a wonderful dr., right now I am in shock. She always said I was one of her favorite patients. Not only am I now back to where my weight is a real health factor causing me health problems but I am so fatigued I can hardly do anything. Anyone who does not know what a low thyroid prolbems causes is weight gain, slow metabolism thus weight gain and no energy, fatigue also causes weight gain, depression, basically it affects your whole body.

I am sorry to hear about your troubles. I agree it is unethical and you should get your records look them over with your new dr. and then perhaps ask your old dr to explain her reasoning. At any rate keep your head up (((((mesue))))
