I was watching the news and they ran a segment of national news about a 911 operator who "played a joke" on a 911 caller.

According to the 911 tape, a woman called in to have the police called out because her 12 year old daughter was being uncontrollable and violent, so the 911 operator says "so do you want me to come out and shoot her?" there was a LONG pause and the lady says "EXCUSE ME?" .... then he said it was a joke and she went on to tell him it wouldn't be so funny when she called his supervisor. I'd be super PO'd. Maybe not as much if anyone else said it, but a 911 operator is the lifeline for a lot of people and nothing about it is funny.

If I can find the story, I will post it (or if someone else finds it, please share :) )

911 Dispatcher Reprimanded Over Wisecrack
The Associated Press
Wednesday, April 13, 2005; 3:36 PM

WATAUGA, Texas - A 911 dispatcher was reprimanded for responding to a mother's plea for help with an unruly child by saying: "OK. Do you want us to come over to shoot her?"

"I admit what I did. It was stupid, it was inexcusable and I'm sorry," said dispatcher Mike Forbess.

The woman, identified only as Lori in Wednesday's Fort Worth Star-Telegram, said she recently phoned authorities after coming home to find her daughters fighting. She told the dispatcher that her 12-year-old had kicked a hole in the door.

After Forbess' comment, the woman fell silent for about five seconds.

"Are you there?" Forbess asked.

"Excuse me?" the woman asked.

Forbess, a dispatcher for five years at the Watauga Department of Public Safety, told her he was joking and apologized. But the woman was offended, and Forbess immediately told his supervisor what happened.

"This type of response cannot be tolerated, and this letter shall serve as notice that any future unprofessional responses while answering the 911 line will be cause for termination," Police Chief David Van Laar wrote to Forbess.

Watauga is a Fort Worth suburb of about 22,100 residents.

I heard this on the news tonight also. They did not fire the guy, they said it was because he call his supervisor immediatly and told him what he did. He got a written warning and will be fired if anything likes this ever happens again.

I agree that it was very inappropriate, but being the smart mouth I am I probably would of shot back at him with something like "yea would ya" or "no, but can I do it?" Just to tick him off and show him how stupid he sounded!

What I don't get is why do parents end up calling 911 when there kids act like rabid baboons ? Since she wasn't a parent in control of her own problems, she's gotta call and tie up valuable resources to see if she can get someone to come out and fix her problem for her. Maybe the guy has has more than one call, and ya know, he would know how much resources were wasted because a parent can't control thier child (which is that womans problem, not the states, not the police and not the 911 op) Yeah what he said was dumb, but for crying out loud, he was probably reacting to the "sheesh there another parent that wants us to save them from life" phone call.

Think about it for a sec......whiny parent calls and complains to 911 thier kid is acting like a baboon. Well they send cops out. The cops only have 2 options. 1) talk to the kid or 2) take the kid to jail. It's gonna waste resources either way cause the cop will just talk and leave, when he could have been doing something MORE PRODUCTIVE or the parent is gonna have to spend money to get the kid out of jail, which they aren't gonna be happy about and would have been cheaper if they had just learned to handle thier own problems.

Like you said, 911 is a lifeline. That call could have been tieing up the line when someone else needed it more.

Now, all the self rightouse parents out there that wanna flame me cause they call 911 eveytime lil jonny don't clean his room, flame away.

I agree it wasn't the best response but it was kinda funny..lol. Not for the mother in the middle of a crisis. His comment was inappropriate, but not worthy of losing a job (IMO). I bet he'll never do it again. LOL. I imagine this is a great guy and alot of fun, just didn't think before he spoke.

I believe that the mother was wrong for calling 911. This is called parenting. Maybe she should have taken the role of the adult and done something with her children before they were this out of hand.

Ok, so the operator was not correct either, but when I read the article I had to laugh myself. He was at a loss as to what to say and then it just came out.

Did the mother want her child arrested for bad behavior??

I gotta say this and you can flame me if you want.....

When I was 8mo prego my two teens daughters got into a violent fight. The older one bit the younger one so bad she needed stitches. (this was all over a pair of jeans, mind you  ) There was NOTHING I could have done. I tried to pull them out of the closet, but I was (supposed to be) on bed rest. I ended up having to call the police.

I heard the tape, and I DO agree that what she called for was something she could of handeled herself, but just so ya know... sometimes when sisters fight they FIGHT!

It took 3 officers to get them out of the closet. That was the only time anything like that had ever happened... and it never happened again. They lived like the Amish for about 3 months after that.

LOL, I would never be a 911 operator for the world. Yes, sometimes people call for stupid things. My step-son called them cause we wanted him to take out the trash. He told them he wanted to be escorted to his mother's house. I feel sorry for the emergency people and the police who have to put up with this nonsense. We didn't know what the did until he did it. I think his mother told him he could call the police if his father ever kept him from coming to her house. WELL TAKE THE TRASH AND HE WILL TAKE YOU RIGHT TO YOUR MOTHER'S, GEESH. LOL

Luckily the police know this nonsense goes on all the time. When they showed up and found out what was really happening, boy did they chew him out. I think they are getting tired of it. Who wouldn't.

I don't blame parents calling when the kids are trying to kill each other but I think we need a different place to call instead of 911. Maybe big uncle Bill can come over and break it up. :D

sounds like the 911 operator needs a vacation... i personally dont think they get hired if they are an idiot.. but stupid call after stupid call would make a 911 person get pissy....

not saying the lady was stupid.. . im sure at the moment she needed the police... but if her kids r like that she needs more than the police... she needs intervention!

and if she expects the police to come.. well then her kids should be locked up for disturbing the peace!

When I heard the actual 911 tape of this on Good Morning America, I just burst out laughing. It was priceless. Maybe he was just trying to get her to calm down by adding humor to the situation. Yeah, I know it wasn't funny for the mother, but like everyone else said, she needs to parent her own kids, not the police.

OK A FEW WORDS FROM A 9-1-1 DISPATCHER WHO NEEDS A VACATION TOO..

Stupid call, after stupid call does get to you. TRUST ME.. but Technically a crime was being commited it was DOMESTIC ASSAULT. and its a FELONY. doesn't matter what started it, its TECHNICALLY still a crime. HOWEVER, you know as well as i do, if the officers came out and arrested the daughters for it, the mother would have been mad at the officers, even though she called them. things like this are a no win situation for law enforcement. it happens with man/wife all the time, and it happens with mom/daughter, dad/son, siblings, and the such alot too. and like i said its still DOMESTIC ASSAULT and still a crime.

yes parents should be able to control their children, but alot of parents don't try to teach their children respect or manners until its too late, and alot of women who are "small" have some big sons, or daugthers who can just flat out over power them. so in some instances i do completely understand, BUT. DON'T COME UNGLUED WHEN THEY ARE ARRESTED FOR THE CRIME YOU REPORTED.

ok. let me get down, my big ole fat butt is about to crush this soap box of mine and then i'll have to call 911 for an ambulance, lol and i know these medics too well around here. lol

I've got a 911 story for ya... one that actually could have gotten a man killed... a couple months back a guy was driving through Irving (a suburb of Dallas) when another guy w/ road rage started chasing him... so he called 911. Before the Irving police could get to him he crossed the jurisdiction line in to Dallas... so the 911 operator called Dallas 911 to get him the assistance he needed... the Dallas 911 operator said for the man to TURN AROUND AND GO BACK TO IRVING where the crime started so that the Irving police could help him... I mean... what part of going 120 mph on a strange interstate to save the guys life didn't this dumb chick not get? She WOULD NOT call the Dallas police out to assist him... just 'turn around and go back where it started'... well who gives a crap where it started! They never did say whether she lost her job or not... probably wouldn't surprise me if they brushed it under the rug and nothing came of it at all... but I can say this... atleast it was a real emergency!

I am completly shocked right now.....my rear end is not burning from the flames....hmmm...could I be on to something here ? lol.

IMO, I think parents that do that, unless thier kid is wielding a knife or beating the snot out of them, I think that if the parent calls 911 to have cops come out to the house to reprimand thier child for not listening, I think the parent should get ticket for court. I mean, yeah, if the kid is being dangerouse and you've already gotten popped in the process of setting the lil booger down, go ahead and call them. But if you call them because "oh she's being mouthy and not listening and Im at the end of my rope" then yeah, you need a tickect of lets say....$600.00...now, if parents knew that it would cost them $600.00 everytime they wanted the cops to come and save them from parenthood....trust me, alot of ya'll would be acting like parents and making the kids mind, come heck or high water.....ya know I noticed something.....if a lazy parent knows there is a free resource out there that will straighten out thier little minions, they will use it relentlessly...now if there's a resource to straighten them out...but it cost $600.00....the parent would take lil jonny, sit him down in a chair and REMIND him...Im older than you, you LISTEN to me....and ya know it works as well as calling the cops.....funny how it all works out in the end.

And if the police came and arrested her children, who would be posting bail to get them out? The mother. And if she didn't have the money would she be willing to let her children sit in JD until their case was heard? I highly doubt it.

I do not know the specifics of the case but the Mom said she was uncontrollable and violent. This 911 operator was WRONG and should have been terminated. He told his supervisor only because the woman had stated that she was going to report him. These operators are supposed to be trained professionals. They are adults and should have known better.

In todays age when doctors with the permission of the parents are drugging our children with narcotics like zoloft which is not recommended for those under the age of 18, or prozac, paxil or any of the other drugs given to kids today, proves that this operator should be replaced. Think back of all the cases involving children being violent and killing their parents, grandparents, siblings, schoolmates etc., lots of them were on these drugs.

I am not saying this is the case here but as a trained professional he should have reacted more professionally.

What happens to us if we play a prank calling 911?

Thank you. That is exactly what I was thinking. I called the police one night when we lived near Savannah because some jerk in our neighboring apartment had his base turned up blasting at 11pm at night during the week! It was literally rattling our walls. I called the local police department and they told me to hang up and dial 911. I felt so ridiculous calling 911 for that but what was I supposed to do???

I was watching a tv show about these kind of things one guy got into a motorcycle wreck and a girl called 911 to report it the sheriff answered the phone and told her she shouldnt be making prank calls and making up stories.which she wasnt.and he said a few other things I cant recall that werent called for.anyway a few minutes later someone else called and reported the same accident.he yet told them."we dont have time for calls like these and that someone will get to the scene when they get there." and there was no point in calling the paramedics again cause the call already went out once anyway the guy died from his wounds all because of a sheriff bringing his pis*y attitude to work and not doing his job

That was in CT and he hung up and said too bad he didnt think it was a prank the person didnt die from the lack of emergency personal not being sent he actually died from his injury. They said that the time wasnt an isssue but his attitude was poor and it was a State trooper that took the call and the 3rd time someone called a dispatcher took the phone call.

The trooper was pissy because it is a strip of rd where kids aree always racing and getting into accidents and he was like you shouldnt have been speeding.

I dont approve of what the dispatcher in Tx did but I heard the tape and he was just making a joke maybe a bad joke but sometimes and I know we have ALL done it said something at the wrong time we are all human

My old boss's girlfreind had the police come to her door (last year) they said 911 was called from her house, she said she didn't call....then there was a little voice from behind her said "I did mommy" the cop asked him why he called,he said "because we are out of potato chips" LMAO Luckily we live in a VERY small town and Lonnie (the cop) got a kick out of it.

It would be a worthy 911 call for me if we were out of Lay's Pickle chips lol :D
