I think his greatest achievement was his ability to reach out to so many people. That he was more human than popes of the past. He spoke several languages and he travelled so much that he wasn't just a leader sitting in Rome. People felt at ease with him and not in awe.

Well I think they felt both. At ease and also in awe. One young priest was telling about how he decided to join the priesthood. He was a working man and had done many jobs but when he went to see the pope and he was just standing on the street like everyone else when the popemobile came around the pope looked into his eyes and he was transformed. Right then he decided to become a priest. Yes, he may have been thinking about it but seeing the pope and having the pope look into his eyes did something to his soul. Now that is powerful.
