Aspartame Side Effects
The components of aspartame can lead to a number of health problems, as you have read. Side effects can occur gradually, can be immediate, or can be acute reactions. According to Lendon Smith, M.D. there is an enormous population suffering from side effects associated with aspartame, yet have no idea why drugs, supplements and herbs don’t relieve their symptoms. Then, there are users who don’t ‘appear’ to suffer immediate reactions at all. Even these individuals are susceptible to the long-term damage caused by excitatory amino acids, phenylalanine, methanol, and DKP.

Adverse reactions and side effects of aspartame include:

Eye
blindness in one or both eyes
decreased vision and/or other eye problems such as: blurring, bright flashes, squiggly lines, tunnel vision, decreased night vision
pain in one or both eyes
decreased tears
trouble with contact lenses
bulging eyes

Ear
tinnitus - ringing or buzzing sound
severe intolerance of noise
marked hearing impairment

Neurologic
epileptic seizures
headaches, migraines and some severe
dizziness, unsteadiness, both
confusion, memory loss, both
severe drowsiness and sleepiness
paresthesia or numbness of the limbs
severe slurring of speech
severe hyperactivity and restless legs
atypical facial pain
severe tremors

Psychological/Psychiatric
severe depression
irritability
aggression
anxiety
personality changes
insomnia
phobias

Chest
palpitations, tachycardia
shortness of breath
recent high blood pressure

Gastrointestinal
nausea
diarrhea, sometimes with blood in stools
abdominal pain
pain when swallowing

Skin and Allergies
itching without a rash
lip and mouth reactions
hives
aggravated respiratory allergies such as asthma

Endocrine and Metabolic
loss of control of diabetes
menstrual changes
marked thinning or loss of hair
marked weight loss
gradual weight gain
aggravated low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
severe PMS

Other
frequency of voiding and burning during urination
excessive thirst, fluid retention, leg swelling, and bloating
increased susceptibility to infection

Additional Symptoms of Aspartame Toxicity include the most critical symptoms of all
death
irreversible brain damage
birth defects, including mental retardation
peptic ulcers
aspartame addiction and increased craving for sweets
hyperactivity in children
severe depression
aggressive behavior
suicidal tendencies

Aspartame may trigger, mimic, or cause the following illnesses:
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Epstein-Barr
Post-Polio Syndrome
Lyme Disease
Grave’s Disease
Meniere’s Disease
Alzheimer’s Disease
ALS
Epilepsy
Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
EMS
Hypothyroidism
Mercury sensitivity from Amalgam fillings
Fibromyalgia
Lupus
non-Hodgkins
Lymphoma
Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)

These are not allergies or sensitivities, but diseases and disease syndromes. Aspartame poisoning is commonly misdiagnosed because aspartame symptoms mock textbook ‘disease’ symptoms, such as Grave’s Disease.

NO. actually I don't. Not all harley people drink and smoke LOL I finally got hubby to give up diet coke and his weight has started coming down. All I had to do was type info from the can into search and let him read it. He stopped cold turkey. They say cancer cannot live without phenylalanines and aspartame is made up of 50% of phens. He was drinking 3 3 litter bottles a day. His dad when he was alive was a preacher and hubby saw too many people die awful deaths from cancer. Now it is just water and lots of it. He says he feels better now. I drank reg. pepsi and I decided to go cold turkey with him. It was hard but was so worth it. I have shed 20lbs and I feel great. Good luck to you whatever you decide to do.

I have acute broncitus(?) and I couldn't smoke even if I wanted too. My lungs are too sensitive. I can hardly be around smokers without getting ill.

I can't drink diet sodas. I tried it years ago and started feeling sick and couldn't figure out why. Finally I realized that I started feeling bad after I started drinking diet soda. Stopped drinking it and started feeling better. I tried it again a couple of years ago. I think it Pepsi One I tried drinking, started getting sick again. Stopped drinking it and started feeling better.
I just stay away from Aspartame so I don't start feeling bad again.

I know it can make you sick-some people more so than others. When I was in my twentys (long ago) I tried a diet drink and I had awful stomach cramps. My doctor said it was the pop. I just wanted to let people see whats in that stuff. I would of never tried it if I had known what I do now.

There are a lot of good diet sodas that contain no aspartame! Hansens Sodas, Shasta, Diet Rite etc etc just to name a few.

I confess that I am a Diet Coke addict. I don't drink or smoke, so I guess I can have one addiction. The only thing that would make me stop is if it started to bother my tummy... and with all my tummy aches, it's possible someday. But in the meantime... :D

Hate to burst your bubble but diet coke is even worst than diet pepsi. If I was forced to choose one it would be diet pepsi. The diet coke containts the same stuff (chemicals) that they use to embalm people. Hey look at it this way-when you die you will be well preserved at least LOL

Snopes says all the reports on aspartame are FALSE.

http://www.snopes.com/toxins/aspartame.asp

Now THATS good info:

Origins:

Is Aspartame Safe? (FDA):
To date, FDA has not determined any consistent pattern of symptoms that can be attributed to the use of aspartame, nor is the agency aware of any recent studies that clearly show safety problems.

Aspartame and the Internet (The Lancet): Our research revealed over 6000 web sites that mention aspartame, with many hundreds alleging aspartame to be the cause of multiple sclerosis, lupus erythematosis, Gulf War Syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, brain tumours, and diabetes mellitus, among many others. Virtually all of the information offered is anecdotal, from anonymous sources and is scientifically implausible.

ACSH Debunks Internet Health Hoax (American Council on Science and Health): Health scare artists have found a whole new medium for terrorizing the public — the Internet. Individuals in search of accurate health information may literally become caught in the Web, where health hoaxes and urban medical myths run rampant. The health scare messages are always the same — whatever it is, it will make you sick.

Beware The E-Mail Hoax: The Evils Of Nutrasweet (Aspartame) (Dr. Dean Edell): A highly inaccurate "chain letter" is being circulated via e-mail warning the reader of the health dangers of aspartame (Nutrasweet) diet drinks.
There is so much scientific untruth in it, it’s scary. Be careful, because others know how to manipulate you by this. Just because something is beyond your comprehension doesn’t mean it is scientific.

FDA Statement on Aspartame (FDA): Analysis of the National Cancer Institute's public data base on cancer incidence in the United States — the SEER Program — does not support an association between the use of aspartame and increased incidence of brain tumors.

Study Reaffirms Safety of Aspartame (MIT News): Even daily large doses of the high-intensity sweetener aspartame, also known as NutraSweet, had no adverse effect on study subjects' health and well-being, a visiting scientist at MIT reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition last week.
"We conclude that aspartame is safe for the general population," said Paul A. Spiers, visiting scientist in the Clinical Research Center (CRC).

A Web of Deceit (TIME magazine): A widely disseminated e-mail by a "Nancy Markle" links aspartame to Alzheimer's, birth defects, brain cancer, diabetes, Gulf War syndrome, lupus, multiple sclerosis and seizures. Right away, the long list warrants skepticism. Just as no single chemical cures everything, none causes everything.

Sure we all know the FDA would never steer us wrong. Right!!!!!!!!
