For those of you who were following my post about us getting custody of my disabled granddaughter, here's the next installment. I had been trying to work with my son so as to not cause him extreme financial hardship, allowing him to give me only a portion of her SSI benefit. I figured he could give me a little more each month and allow him time to adjust financially. I know the check is all hers, but he is my son. Well, I found out last night that he got his tax refund (over $3,000). It would have been nice if he's gotten some things for her, but that's not the worst part. After all of his whining about how they can't afford to live without that check, I found out he and his girlfriend went out and bought two new cell phones with internet/pic capability at $75.00 a month basic fee. That's $150.00 that should be going for his child that I AM TAKING CARE OF! I've officially had enough. On Tuesday I will be calling SS and reporting the change in her living arrangements and having him removed as payee. If he has trouble with his bills he can take the dang cell phones back. We are preparing to file bankruptcy, now have a disabled child to take care of, and HE'S getting new cell phones. GRRRRRRRRRRR

I totally agree! I hope you get what you deserve! That baby needs you more than he needs her money.

Him being your son should not even be an issue,he is an adult and can fend for himself.Your granddaughter on the other hand is a child with disabilities who can not fend for herself. The SS money was determined by HER needs not your sons and meant for her and her alone. You said you are filing for bankruptcy yourself, therefore you need that money to care for her. I hope you follow through and call to report the change in her living arrangements.
Keep us posted and best of luck to you.

good luck - I am continually amazed as what younger people today think are necessities. I have never had cable tv, I have dial up internet for 9.50 a month, I have had the same furniture for 30 years, and it was 2nd hand or super cheap to begin with. my priority is paying my mortgage and saving to retire , but Iam always giving/ lending money to my younger siblings...who have these things. I know part of the difference is they have kids, but learn to budget...

Him being your son has nothing to do with your granddaughters check. That money is given to take care of her, not enable them to buy "toys" because they think they need it. It is blatently obvious he does not care his daughter as none of the tax money (which I know that he used her to get as much as he did) was given to you to help with her care.
Do what you have to do for your grand child. He will get mad and upset but he brought this on himself.

EMSNurse,
You are an amazing woman! Your granddaughter is very fortunate to have such a loving & caring grandmother.
While I know you love your son, I don't think he should be using her check to get cell phones. That's money that could be used to buy her the things she needs (clothes, shoes, toys & anything else she desires).
