how often do people have twins that were missed on the ultrasound?
at 16 weeks i had an U/S and was told that i only have one baby. but i am really large for 22 weeks and i feel much more pregnant than i am. i keep having these twin dreams and have had them since the beginning.

We knew at 5 weeks we were having twins. At 16 weeks, the babies are pretty big and the u/s tech would have to be blind not to see another baby.
How are you measuring? When your doc does the fundal height, what are you measuring?
It could just be the way your body is shaped. I'm a bigger girl with a wide body, and it took me until 24 weeks to start showing....while other friends started showing at 15 weeks.

Some women are just larger when it comes to carrying babies. Every woman carries their baby differently.

well i havn't heard anything about fundal height, all my dr has done so far is check for heart beat. right now i'm about the size that i was when i was 7 months last time. also i can't stand or sit upright for extended periods of time otherwise it's extremely painful and i feel like i have 10 lb bowling ball sitting down there.

I belong to a few pregnancy boards, and they say that for first time moms, it takes awhile for things to start...but with subsequent babies, you'll show sooner, feel them move sooner and things like that.
If you're worried, ask your OB. He'll have the results of your u/s, so he can let you know if they are measuring too big and if so why it is.

i was very small when i got pregnant with my daughter, but gained 60 lbs and she was 9lbs 13oz. then with my son, i gained 30 lbs and he was 9lbs 1oz. i guess its different for everyone. everyone i knew thought i was having twins when i was pregnant with my daughter. no one believed it when just one baby came out.... :D

my son was born a month early and weighed 7lbs 10 oz so if i carry this baby full term it will probably be a big baby. i havn't really gained a ton of weight so far, by boobs are twice the size they were though :D

I felt like this with all 3 of my daughters when I was pregnant. It felt like the baby's head was pushing down there towards my 7 month. I couldn't walk much and I hated going shopping. Hey have you found out yet what you are having? When is the baby due? Congrats!

My friend's DIL had her twins premature about 2 months ago. Up until she went into premature labor she was told it was only one. Well SUPRISE! Two came out.

My sister didnt find out she was having twins til she had her ultrasound. The sonographist(sp?) asked her if her doc had ever said anything about 2 babies. She said no...sonographist said "well she should have, cuz you're carrying twins" lemme tell ya, THAT was a surprise! LOL

I didn't find out I was having twins until I was 4 months along. The doctor sent me to have an ultrasound because my blood count was too high. He said it could be one of two things. My baby has spina bifada(sp) or I have a multiple pregnancy.
This was my second pregnancy and I was showing at 3 months. With my first, I started showing at 5 months and that was a single birth. My twins will be 11 next month.

Every woman carries different, and it could also be different every pregnancy too. My sister carried her first all inside, and you could only tell she was pregnant when she wore certain clothes. Otherwise she just looked fat (I'm not trying to sound mean). But with her 2nd, she was all out front.
In my case, I'm always way out there, always asked if it's twins, or if I'm due anytime starting at the 5th month. My biggest was 8-5 and my smallest was 7-5.

With my first one I was very small, someone asked me what I had a week before I had her. With #2,3,4 and5 (yep I have had 5  ) I started showing at 2 1/2 months and by the time I was in my 5th month I looked like I was past due! they checked for twins with each one because I got so big so fast. All mine were fairy small babies too, 6.4, 6.4, 6.4,7.1 and 6.14. each baby I think you carry different. If they didn't show 2 by your last sono or hear another heartbeat chances are you are like me and just popped out really fast.

I think in the "olden" days...surprise twins happened a lot more frequently. Nowadays...with technology being what it is, I think it is rare that someone is surprised by twins.
I agree with the other posters. Each pregnancy is different and subsequent pregnancies tend to show much sooner and seem much bigger than the first pregnancy.
Congratulations!

my last pregnancy was twins, we knew hubby had twins on his side and I knew my exhubby also had twins in his family and since we were distant cousins...well ya get the idea there. My oldest girl Rose we were very sure was a twin, I gained like I was carrying twins. With the twins I actually lost weight, about 50lbs after delivery. I knew at 6 weeks it was twins I went to the doc to do a pg test after having 3 failed tests at home and knowing good and well I was preggo. The nurse said I was not only preggo but very preggo lol; a few mins later I was shooed into the ultrasound room and we saw those babies on the tv. I nearly passed out in shock, my only comment was it better not be 3 lol. For a twin pregnancy it went very smoothly but I'll never do it again I hope.

you and your ex are cousins? i thought twins only had to do with the female's eggs, nothing to do with the male

ya my exhubby and I were 3rd cousins or therabouts. We didn't find out til after we married when his grandparents told us. Noone was upset about it so all was good. As far as twins good the part about them being mostly up to the female is mostly true. In my case my are fraternal and were not concieved at the same time. Tomi was concieved 1st around the 10th of May 2003. and Kata was concieved the weekend of June 13th 2003 lol. Yes we have a date range on both lol. In the case of fraternal twins it's actually common to concieve up to a month apart. One of my friends has twins in her family and decided after I had mine she wanted twins this go around and researched into what would increase her chances of twins...increasing your folic acid intake at least above 1000mcg will increase the chances of multiple ovulations each cycle. Needless to say it's not a multiple pregnancy and she's bummed a bit but she's happy to be preggo.
