My family (hubby, me and the kids) adopted a soldier through a program that I fould here on BBS.
We already sent our first package to him (I wanted him to receive it by Christmas).
We received an e-mail today to tell us that our soldier was killed by a roadside bomb outside of Al Habbaniyah, Iraq.
Our package will probably be returned to us. We were given the name of another soldier that we can send it to (adopt).
The soldier was only 27 years old.
This is soo sad :(

My daughter and I both had the same soldier as you, and I am wondering do they give one soldier to a lot of people. My daughter had signed up separately from me. Now we were given a new soldier, Timothy.

I am so sorry to hear this. They are such brave young men and women over there.
This past weekend in Las Vegas they held a rally for the families of the service men and women. The families are really struggling to make ends meet. It was to help all of them thru the holidays. And a memorial service for the local soldiers who gave their lives in this war.

How tragic. I looked at his picture and he looks like he was such a sweetheart, he reminds me of one of my little brother's. The picture of his wife and his mother together at the funeral just brought me to tears. He has three little boys too. This is just terrible.

As I sit here and read this my eyes are filled with tears. What a sacrifice our nation is taking. We have family members and friends fighting in the Gulf. My grandson's mom is there, she is 24 years. They live 1500 miles from me. She was shipped last month. Leaving him with the other grandparents.
I feel great sorrow for you and his immediate family. I will keep all of you in my prayers.

i am so sorry & my prayers are with you and his family-
my dd has several friends that are going into different branches of the service & iI feel so frightened for them-one of them joined the national guard-did some training at camp shelby & now is in california for something else before he goes to iraq--
my dd is 17 and i don't know how this sounds but she really does not comprehend why I constantly ask about him/them-and how god forbid something couls happen
once more i am so sorry for you & his family

I got the same email this AM. A few people were given the same soldier--that initial soldier is actually the contact person, who will pass your package or letter along to the actual soldier you are adopting. Here's what the initial email says:
"We have found
that using a Point of Contact for the initial mailing is often a preferred
method, as the platoon contact can make sure the soldier is still on active
duty overseas, and knows when they are scheduled to return home."..."When the platoon contact receives your letter/package, they will pass it on
to your soldier, who signed up with them to be a part of the program."
It's so tragic--what a wake up call for me. I know what war is, but to have it slap you in the face that way. I pray for them all every day.

Thanks. I wondered how that worked. Still, it's so sad that more people keep getting killed over there.
