KENT, Wash. - A man who placed a lava lamp on a hot stovetop was killed when it exploded and sent a shard of glass into his heart, police said.
Philip Quinn, 24, was found dead in his trailer home Sunday night by his parents.
“Why on earth he was heating a lava lamp on the stove, we don’t know,” Kent Police spokesman Paul Petersen said Monday.
A lava lamp features blobs of wax in liquid that rise and fall in a container when heated by a bulb at the base of the lamp.
After the lamp exploded, Quinn apparently stumbled into his bedroom, where he died Sunday afternoon, authorities said.
Police found no evidence of drug or alcohol use.

I do feel bad for him and his family though. :(

Only 24..... :(
Maybe the lamp wasn't working and he want to try and heat it up to get it to work.

No need to toss out your lava lamp. Just don't be an idiot and put it on the stove to heat.
I don't know if it's sad that he died or if it's kind of a Karma thing, you know... Culling the herd.
I'm sorry, I know that was harsh, but come on... It's a LAMP, not a pot or pan. Now people are going to throw out lava lamps and the makers are going to have to put warnings on the boxes..... Where has common sense gone to?

That is sad but but I'm not going to throw away my lava lamp. I know better than to put it on a hot surface.

Can anyone say Darwin award? Poor guy, I wonder if he just thought he was heating the lamp up, I doubt he had any clue it was a bad thing to do, very sad.

This sounds like the fella that used the lawn mower to trim his bushes...instead of the grass....and received severe injuries. DUH!

Culling the herd? sad comment, this was someone's child, no matter his age, or how stupid it seems to us.

Just a thought, and of course I don't know the family or anything, but what about suicide?
Also I know so really um...intellectually challenged people but I think even THEY know you just don't put a lamp on a HOT stove. He had to turn the stove on for some reason, and who here has a lava lamp IN their kitchen?
