We have 7 eucalyptus trees in the back yard, about 100' tall. They really scare me when the Santa Ana's are blowing, I've watched a few huge branches break off. Been looking around to find someone to cut them down before they fall down on the house but I'm afraid it's out of the question now. We live in Southern California. We have a golden eagle hanging out in the tallest one! UPS hunk (gotta love those HIB's) pointed him out to me last wednesday evening, and he's been coming back every night (the eagle and the ups hunk)! This guy is huge, wingspan is around 7 feet! I can't describe how beautiful he is, he's just too pretty for words. Late at night when the neighborhood is asleep I go out and watch him through binoculars, he kind of glows at night, and as soon as I walk out in the yard I can feel his presence, he is watching everything, his head turns from side to side and I know he's watching me. We have chickens next door and I think they may have attracted him, also, we live in a very strange area, industrial steel mills but a couple of blocks of houses in the middle and they have 'industrial waste' ponds that are really quite pretty and full of fish. I read that they are relocating the golden eagles from the Channel Islands as they are killing all the native fox and I suspect that he came from there and is looking for a home. It's too late in the season for him to be migrating. I've taken alot of pics but my camera is not that good and all you can see is his outline in the pics. I haven't been able to spot whether he is tagged. I love having him in my yard, but I am concerned about a couple of things. I read that eagles are very susceptible to pollution, and we certainly have plenty of that here. I'm also worried that some idiot will shoot him down to save his chickens or for a trophy. Is there some agency I should call or someone I should report his presence to? I don't think this is a good place for the big guy (or girl? I just don't know) and I would much rather see him flying around up at Big Bear than taking his chances here. I'm certainly honored that he chose my back yard to hang out in, but I am very concerned for his safety.

the UPS guy has a 7 foot wingspan??!! WOW! LOL - really, how cool to have a beautiful bird like that around. Isn't is illegal to shoot them? (Although that never seems to stop anyone)

Guess I didn't phrase that quite right! I read that it's a $10,000 fine to be in possession of a feather or any body part of an eagle, but we do have a few idiots in the neighborhood and that wouldn't stop them. The word doesn't seem to be out yet about the new arrival, and the kids and I are keeping it quiet so someone doesn't get the bright idea to take him down, but he's pretty obvious when he flies in or out of the trees, so it's just a matter of time.

WOW how lucky you are. I am not sure about who to call but I sure do understand your concerns. Are you married? If not maybe you and the UPS Dude can form a "plan" together...hehe...good luck with the eagle and the UPS Dude...lol.

Too funny! Although my ups guy is a hottie, we have not made any plans, dang it, I've tried! Perhaps I could invite him over for dinner and a night of eagle viewing!

i would call your local game warden office. or state wildlife resource office. look in the blue pages of your phone book. i would think it would be there. but they can tell you what to do /not to do. and they can maybe warn ppl around about harming the bird. they will know what to do. just tell them you are concerned and watned to report it being there.
you are very lucky!!
this summer we heard some owls outside of our house, but we never got to see htem. dh said they must be big bc of the sound they were making. he hears them in the woods while hunting, but never any here at our house!

Thank you, ladybugbhb, I will call them. I think I already know in the back of my mind that is the right thing to do, but I am just so afraid of anyone disturbing him. We had a barn owl a couple years ago, hoot hoot hoot! We are at the base of the San Bernardino mountains and with the huge trees we have we seem to attract the wildlife. It's just so fantastic to have an eagle in my yard that I don't want anything to change!

I am so jealous of you 'big bird'. What an awesome site that must be to see in your own yard. A few years ago there was a nesting pair in Greensboro at one of the lakes. If you drove to the lake sometimes you could see them flying. Magnificent bird :)

I don't see him now, I think he's gone for the day, but I did hear him awhile ago, he said 'kee kee kee' in a really high pitched tone. I looked and couldn't spot him, but I definitely heard him. My old Chow dog is pretty much deaf in one ear and can't hear out of the other, but even his ears perked up. This is so exciting. I so hope he comes back tonight but I am so worried that someone will screw with him. In the back of my head, a tape is playing, 'see if the eagle can be relocted for his safety', yet sitting outside watching an eagle at 3 am is pretty darn wonderful too! He's just so darned spectacular that I hesitate to take the chance and make a call and possibly lose him. Woe is me!

Made the calls, I was told to just enjoy him unless someone starts messing with him. You can bet your sweet bippee that the kids and I will be looking out for him.I was kind of hoping that the humane society or someone would come out and relocate him to a safer place. But no, I guues we are stuck with an eagle!
