That's an easy one. Get a huge pot. Put the hambone in it with lots of water. Add a bag of split peas. Add some chopped up carrots. A chopped up small onion. Boil for awhile and then simmer for a few hours. Not sure a hambone could fit in a crockpot. The bone needs to be covered in water. I don't like peas but my family adored this especially in the winter when it was cold. A good belly stuffer :D

Also, you could use soup beans (navy beans) actually any kind of beans. Good luck.

I use navy beans instead of the peas.

I also use the ham bone to cook in with my cabbage. Also with rudabega (sp) and also for turnips.

Ham Bones are also great for making lentil soup on.
It's the same principle as the bean and pea soup. I have always found however, that if you sautee the onions first and then add a couple of teaspoons of chicken soup base you'll get a richer flavor
It is always better the day after it's made, and make sure to add lots of black pepper.
F.Y.I Use the same recipe, with black turtle beans, add a chopped red pepper, and you have something you can pay as much $15 a bowl for in some restaurants ;)
