When I was growing up, we had dinner in the evening, around 5ish or so. That was back in the day when all the aunts uncles cousins, etc... would be at gramma's house. Kids outside playing, men glued to the game and women in the kitchen....

Over the years we have gradually phased out gramma's house ( :( ) and we rarely all get together anymore. So we either eat at moms or go out (like this year) and we normally have lunch and are back on the road by 3 or 4 pm.

When do you eat?

We're going to my sister's in Pueblo, I guess it's about 100 mile drive. She says we will be eating about 2:00.

When we growing up, we ate around noon, so my dad had to get up around 5 A.M. to put the bird in the oven. He always complained about it the night before, but I think it was easier for my mom to eat early and then just let us nine kids pick on it for the rest of the day. :)

Oh yes I miss those turkey days at Grandma's too. Our family is so small now, there are barely enough for us to fill a table. And now the kids all want to do their own thing or they have inlaws to visit. It is all changed. We are going to my daughter in law's parents house to eat at 2:30.

This TIME thing is the reason we always have a problem when we get together. Usually my mom cooks. Okay. Well, my sister has four kids and a hubby and they live 1/2 hour away. She complains because my dad and mom will say dinner is at 3 (let's say). She gripes because it is too early for dinner. She will have to serve the kids something else when they are hungry later that night. So what? My mom and dad ALWAYS give them a pack of food to take home. Anyhow, she complains the whole time.

Secondly...my dad will say we will eat at 3. Well, we live downstairs from them, so that is okay. But, my dh and son are vegetarians and I have to cook them something else. Meanwhile, I will have the food ready for 3 and my Dad will say "Um, we are not ready yet." (so the food I made for my son and hubby gets cold or needs heating up..) and or my father makes my mom serve the food earlier so my husband's meal is NOT done in time......

This year we are opting out....my sister is going to her sister in laws and I told my mother to just go to their friend's house (she and dad were invited to 2 places but WANT to stay home). We are having a meal (just me, DH and son). We usually do the same at Christmas. (We all go out for Christmas Eve dinner). It is just easier than dealing with all the nonsense.

Every year it's different. DH works swing shift 7am-7pm or 7pm-7am. When he works days, turkey day is after 7. This year, he works nites so we'll be eating at 2 or 3. The years he don't work Thanksgiving at all, we eat whenever it gets done. lol

We have always eaten at 1:00 but this year since daughter has to be at in-laws at 2pm we are having later around 5:30-6:00
we have just the kids and spouses and grandkids and every 6th year my mother in law so this is our year to have her this year.

We normally eat around 2 (if it's just us) and just pick at, or eat a full plate(S) again, whenever we get hungry :D

It varies w/ going over to other family members' houses, if we do go (anywhere from 1-7pm.. and the later times are at my in-laws' houses... they spend most of the time gabbing instead of cooking or anything else lol) .

We always ate at 2 and tried to eat more at 6, but mostly was just piecing then as we was still too full from dinner. This year we will probably eat around 1 as there will not be any family here except me and my parents.
