5 week old baby dies after being attacked by dog

JACKSONVILLE, Florida (AP) -- A 5-week-old baby left alone by his grandmother died after being mauled by the family dog.

Jose Diaz was on a bed Tuesday when the dog jumped up and attacked him. Police believe a 7-year-old mutt hurt the boy, though officers also found two other dogs in the house.

The baby had bites on his face and head when his parents, both 19, brought him to a fire station after the attack. He was taken by helicopter to Shands Jacksonville hospital, where he later died.

Sun Woodjinski, 49, was supposed to be baby-sitting the boy. The baby's mother, Jennifer Woodjinski, was working at a nearby Taco Bell and his father, Albert Diaz, did yardwork.

The mutt belonged to Jennifer Woodjinski, but she left the dog at her mother's home when she moved away and had her baby.

Homicide detectives were investigating, but it appeared the death was accidental, Jacksonville Sheriff's Office spokesman Ken Jefferson said. It was unclear what would be done with the dogs.

I think the article over exagerated on that point... it says the baby was on a bed... I would imagine, since they ruled it accidental, that the child wasn't actually left alone in the house but probably left alone in the room for a nap? I don't know, but I think if she had really left him alone that they would have charged her w/ something?

At any rate, that poor baby and my prayers are w/ his fmaily.

It happened Tuesday on Jacksonville's west side. Authorities said the 7-year-old mixed-breed dog jumped on a bed with infant Jose Diaz after the boy's grandmother left the room for a minute.

"It was just a split second and that was it," said Frank Michno, the grandmother's fiancé.

The baby's mother, Jennifer Woodjinski, was working at a nearby Taco Bell and his father, Albert Diaz, did yardwork.

The baby's parents wrapped their son in a blanket and rushed him to a nearby fire station with severe lacerations. A firefighter gave first aid, but the child died at a hospital.

Police found three dogs at the home and had all of them taken away. Preliminary investigation indicates the death was an accident.


All three of the grandmother's dogs were taken to Animal Control.


The dog belonged to Jennifer Woodjinski, but she left the dog at her mother's home when she moved away and had her baby.

The family was very distraught and still can't believe it happened.

"He's never ever bitten anybody," Michno said of Chance, the dog found on top of the child.

Animal Control took all three of the family's dogs -- two lab mixes and a terrier mix. It's not known at this time what will become of them.
