I just got my first pair of bifocal glasses, and they make me dizzy. Any helpful hints on getting used to them?

Time and patience.
I *hated* mine when I first got them -- after a few weeks I adjusted and now I forget that they are bifocals altogether.

I've had bifocals for 10 years or so & never had any problems with them. However, I started out with the no-line bifocals. I've heard that the regular bifocals do take some getting used to. Just try NOT to use or look through the lower part of your glasses EXCEPT when you are reading. Just be patient. If you're still having problems in a couple weeks, call your eye doctor. The prescription could be off or they might not have the bifocal placed correctly in your lenses.

My DH got his 2 years ago... I think he has worn them a total for 2 hours the entire time
His DO told him that the more he wears them, the quicker he will become adjusted.... he still won't wear them.

I just down't look down thru the bi-focal part when I walk. Makes me feel like I'm walking on my knees. The hardest part for me is keeping them clean.

I hate going to the eye doctor. The new prescription is never right and I end up going back several times then giving up and going back to my old pair.
The last time I got a new prescription it took three exams before I could wear the new glasses. Guess my eyes got to a point they were that bad the new prescription worked, at least, the new prescription helped more than the old ones.
My relatives and friends have the same problems. Can't wear the new glasses. It's hard to believe the new doctors are so inept when they come out of school. Maybe they go more strong than is necessary. Something is happening.

I've worn bifocals since I was 10(when I wear them, I'm bad about only wearing them when I have no choice). I agree with Jaybird, there is a huge difference in lined and no lines. As soon as you get the hang of looking up and looking down as needed it gets easier to deal with.

I have the ones with no lines also. I definitly had trouble walking down stairs for a while! I also had some fairly decent headaches the first week, until I realized I was always looking out the wrong part of the glasses. I guess I had a tendency to move my HEAD, not my EYES. Once you learn to look out the right part, you'll be fine.

thanks all - these are no line bifocals . They are the first part of "real" glasses I have had, but I have been wearing cheaters for about 4 years. Guess I will just have to keep trying!

Mine have lines and just the inner corners are bi-focal.
Its so weird but i am getting used to them and learning how to look down to read and not walk as others have said.....lol

I first got bifocals after 20+ yrs wearing contacts. The first thing I did was walk out of the door and prompty fall down a short flight of stairs! LOL Didn't take me long to adjust.
