The 84-year-old actor, who played "Scotty" on the '60s TV series, decided to retire after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease several months ago. He blew kisses to a crowd of Trekkie faithful gathered at Sunday's finale of a two-day tribute held at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel.

Doohan, who played the USS Enterprise's affable chief engineer, Lt. Cmdr. Montgomery "Scotty" Scott of "Beam me up, Scotty" fame, has won the goodwill of fans who say he always took time to sign autographs and talk trivia.

Many fans planned to attend Tuesday's ceremony honoring Doohan with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The event was expected to be his final public appearance.

"We're just very proud to honor dad with this star," said his son, Chris Doohan. "A lot of Star Trek fans helped us out with this."

Doohan, who also has Parkinson's disease and diabetes, mingled with fans at the convention and spoke at a news conference between Scotty impersonation contests and a panel discussion titled, "The Influence of Scotty on Society."

"He wanted to say goodbye to his fans," said Dave Mendel of Berryville, Va., who was dressed in full Klingon battle armor. "How could you not show up for that?"

The event's proceeds will benefit an Alzheimer's research foundation.

I met him at a "mini-con" years ago -- very entertaining gentleman. So sad to hear of his decline ... :(

Scotty was my favorite character on Star Trek....:(

Really sorry to hear he is ill. You never realised he was "pretty old" doing the series. If he is 84 now...he was about 44...he looked younger. Even old Doc McCoy is quite old. He used to be in movies in the 50s before Star Trek.

It's corney, but the original Trek is great....

mccoy is beyond old. DeForst Kelley died back in 1999.

shatner is still hamming it up, and once in a while you see Leonard Nimoy. I like the new hotel commercial he's in with the Shatner.

the character you played will live on forever in everyone. how many of us have used the scotish lilt and said "captain im no miracle worker" when something was broken and we needed it fixed.
i am saddend by the lumps in life you have been given.

i raise my glass to a fine actor!
godspeed!

And then in 1974 he found his one true thing that made his personal life complete, finally. While doing a play in San Francisco, he was met by two young ladies who came backstage to get autographs. Julie brought Wende to the play as a gift, because Wende was a big fan of Scotty's. Jimmy couldn't keep his eyes off Wende. He invited her to come see the play again, and they went on a date. On their second date, he proposed. A few months later, she accepted. On October 12 of this year, Jimmy and Wende will celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary. (By the way, Jimmy's best man was William Campbell, known to fans as "Koloth" and "Trelane.")

That marriage produced three more children for the Doohan family: Eric, Thomas and Sarah — the latter born in 2000 when Jimmy was 80. "Oh, she's gorgeous," he bragged to convention of astronomers that summer.

At first I thought this was going to be a thread to say he passed away. I'm glad he is still around. I have always been a big fan of the series, there isn't one series I didn't love in my own way.

Good luck in all he does.

I think I am gonna cry. Alzheimers is such a cruel disease (but aren't they all). My father was diagnosed with it last year.
It is wonderful that he met with his fans one last time. I hope the rest of his years are peaceful and happy.
