I am so mad! I live in MA and there is this great drive in 10 minutes away from me, its the only one in the area, I think there are only 2 or 3 in MA. Well anyways I absolutely adore the drive-in, its a summertime tradition for me and everyone I know, it is very popular. Well lovely WalMart just bought the place, and they are tearing it down and putting in a SUPER SUPER WalMart. Its not a regular super one, its going to be the biggest one in MA, like its own mall. I am so upset, not only did I lose one of my favorite summer time activities, but now I have to deal with ANOTHER flippin walmart! I know they are cheap, but they treat their customers like animals, long lines, horrible customer service. The traffic around walmarts are just horrible. Now there are 3 walmarts within 15 minutes from me, and I live in this little cow town, in the middle of the boonies. It kills me that Walmart is putting all of the little places out of business, once they get everyone out of business by offering low prices, they will probably jack their prices up sky high, and what can we do about it?? I'm sorry, I usually don't mind walmart, but I think its getting a bit ridiculous, how many do we really need? I decided yesterday after waiting in line for 10 minutes for one item (I really needed it or I would have left) that I will no longer step foot in a walmart if i don't ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO! Lol, thanks for letting me vent guys, please dont yell at me! ::hiding in the corner::

I agree Wal-Mart is taking over alot of places and running the other stores out of business. Unfortunately that is the closest store to me.
It is a shame they are tearing down the drive-in not many of them around anymore.
We had a drive-in here but they shut it down years ago and has been for sale for a long time. Rumor had it Wal-Mart was going to buy it but I don't guess they did because the land is still for sale.

I totally agree. We live in a small town, they put a Super Wal-mart in the town nearby 2 years ago, and now one by one we are watching the smaller business close down. I refuse to buy groceries there, I may pay a little more but I'm not going to help Wal-mart take over and put more people out of business.

Trust me, its a good thing the nearest supercenter is 40 miles away. I have to drive to that plaza to go to work, and it is such a pain, the number of people who will kill you on the road just to go to walmart. It is incredible. Not to mention the lines. You do your grocery shopping there but you cannot buy ANYTHING frozen because it will melt waiting in the 30-40 minute lines. Ive waited 30 minutes there just to walk out. What are people going to do when Walmart puts everyone out of business, then doubles their prices? You'll be stuck! Lol, sorry for venting again, just frustration that has built up I guess.

I love WalMart. I like my local WalMart and all of the people who work there. I feel sorry for those of you who haven't had the great experiences that I have had when I shop there.
WalMart is just great business. It has become what Sears once was. The place to go to get what you want. Obviously Sears isn't exactly WalMart but the idea is the same. You can buy good merchandise at great prices. Small stores go out of business all of the time. It has nothing to do with WalMart as much as it has with a changing economy. People aren't willing to pay the $5 more for the item at Joe's Store even if he has great service. They want to go one place and get everything. And that is what WalMart has become. You can go in and buy everything from diapers to lawn mowers. And at a great price.
Times are changing. WalMart doesn't sell everything that I like but I do enjoy going there.

I happen to like WalMart too, not only because my mom works there (and no, she's never been treated like "dirt" at the one she works at). Where I live, I've never seen WalMart really drive out the little businesses because there are hardly any little businesses here anyway. I was young when the WalMart was built, and before it built, there was a big open field. WalMart didn't drive anything away here. Two years ago they built a Target about a block away, opened up a whole new shopping center with a TjMaxx, B&N, etc...
We also just got a two story WalMart built in the outdoor shopping center about 10 minutes away, and in February the one being built in our mall will open up. Okay... maybe they are a bit cheap because that store was supposed to open in September, was supposed to be the first two story one to open that was built from the ground up (the other one used to be a department store), but due to the building being unsafe do the construction problems or something, they have to rebuild parts of it because they probably hired cheap contractors.
Anyway... I can't really think of any other places around here that would sell stuff that WalMart has if there were no WalMarts. If I need shampoo, I could go to Target, if that was here, or Maybe K-Mart, but they do just about as much business here as WalMart. There are no smaller places. There's the drug stores, but their prices are way higher. Grocery stores rip you off for stuff like that (V05 shampoo is like $3!). I've heard people say that once the "MallMart" opens then the mall will go out of business... I doubt it. People that go shop at the mall usually shop there for all the gazillion clothing stores they have. WalMart isn't going to replace all the more fashionable stores that they have. If anything, I'll be happy when it opens, because I can buy stuff like health and beauty stuff while I'm at the mall, because none of the other stores have that except B&BW and the Body Shop.
Oh... and the door greater at our WalMart here is really nice, she's been there for a loooooong time and she's such a sweet older woman. Sometimes though they have this other lady, and I don't like her much because when I go in with bags from other stores I shopped at while I was out she looks at me like I'm going to steal a bunch of stuff with them.

ITA, Walmart is a market drivin business. They do massive studies to make sure an area will support the building of one. It wouldn't do them any good if they oversaturated a market. It is a trade off sometimes with the service(although I haven't ever had a problem with the ones around here) but a lot of us are willing and happy to make that trade if we can get more for less. When you are supporting a family of 5 plus a FIL on $7.50 an hour walmart can be your best friend. :D ;) :D

there are 2 threads in here about wal-mart...i didnt see this one until 2nd. here is what i wrote in the first thread........
Wal mart sucks......i hate them. they are a bunch of greedy, corporate money hungry b**tards, who want nothing but to run EVERYONE out of business and take over the world. (ok..i may have exaggerated the 'take over the world part..lol) Wal-marts whole purpose is to put the 'other guy' out of business. whether its kmart...or joe schmoe's hardware down the street...they dont care! Wal mart moves in....has insanly low prices....sucks the customers away from the competition.....the competition goes out of business...and since there is no more (competition), wal mart is able to raise their prices. i have seen it happen many times! i have seen 3 kmarts close within 40 miles of me, because of wal-mart. now, all my friends who 'just loooove wal-mart' are b*tching because their prices have gone up, and there is no other place to shop. i have never had a good experience in there...and i only go there if NECESSARY! i would rather drive out of my way to go somewhere else. i cant wait for the day that wal mart has to start closing some of their stores! where i live, there are 3 wal mart super centers within 15 miles! (soon to be 4) is this needed!? they are planning on tearing down a church to put in a wal-mart! the church still doesnt have anywhere to relocate yet! and when they (w.m) do build, their loading dock will be 25 feet from some old couples back door!! yeah...wal-mart really cares (NOT!)
i agree with those of you who said its the managers/employees who make for a bad shopping experience, and a sloppy store. thats a fact ANYWHERE, for any retail store. some stores and neat and clean...some i wouldnt send my dog in.
and the reasons for the lack of cashiers isnt because of scheduling.....its lack of people who want to make minimum wage, with no benefits, and be put in those conditions. thats just the way retail (and fast food) is. thats why, 90% of the time, there are "Help Wanted" signs in the windows.

They are just finishing up building the second walmart here in town, both about 10-15 minutes away.
really I don't have any complaints with them, except for the tire and lube center. seems you'll be collecting social security by the time they get your car done, but other than that, there are just some days I don't feel like running to 10 other stores just to pick up what i need.
I did learn a few things at walmart though:
1. Always do your christmas shopping at 3am. there is barely anyone out, and its the time they start to restock the shelves. What they didn't have a 5pm will be there at 3am.
2. avoid walmart on saturdays at all cost. only the criminally insane will put up with that sort of madness.
3.if you want good parking, park over in the tire or lube. you go get what you need, check out, and leave. keeps ya from having to park out in BFE
4. unless there is a huge line, check out in the electronics department. there usally are less people, and they will mark your bags so you can leave without a problem.
5.also over there, there always seems to be a manager availible.
just some things I learned.

Ya, they do those studies... but they're a freakin joke! Maybe in tiny town america those studies matter... I can imagine in a little town that ppl want walmart, and that's understandable cause the mom and pops ARE expensive, despite their quality service. But where I live, in the past year they've done 2 studies and begun work on 2 new stores DESPITE the citizens of those two burbs BEGGING their city counsels NOT to let them build. I mean, they are everywhere, you don't have to drive more than 5 miles in any given direction to find a wal-mart... but now they want them right next door to schools and neighborhoods... you know, those places where our kids play, places that DO NOT need to be that much busier due to the overwhelming traffic... and instead of letting voters VOTE on it, the city counsel holds sessions to hear the citizens voices and then ignores them! I really think in situations like this that walmart is paying the counsel members some kind of pay off. I'm really not one for just saying stuff like that... but when hundreds of voters, who w/out you wouldn't have your seat anyways, show up to protest walmart in a big way and they let them build anyway... well something is just wrong w/ that picture.
