Our cat, Milwaukee, has something wrong with him. At least, I think he does. All of a sudden he has what looks like a jelly or vaseline around his lips/mouth. There's quite a bit of it. Having cats all of my life, I've never seen this. He is still eating just fine, but refuses his treats at night (he usually loves these). His behavior has been off too, but we've just attributed that to his lonliness (his brother/best friend, Bijoux was hit by a car on June 7th). Does this sound familiar to anyone? TIA.

I don't know what that could be but I hope he gets better soon. :)

Are you sure he isn't eating something he shouldn't be eating. If he is let outside maybe he is getting it there. If he is strictly a housecat see if he is eating your plants or look around and see if he has found some kind of substance like that to eat. Have you wiped it off and smelled it to see if there is a oder to it that may give you some idea to what it is?
I know cats will drool if they are really upset but that shouldn't be like vaseline or jelly.
You might consider taking him to the vet so he can check the cat out and maybe test the substance around it mouth to see what it is.
Good luck hope the cat starts feeling better.

I don't think he's eating anything he shouldn't be eating...but you never know. He is an indoor/outdoor cat. We never feed him ANY human food. We don't have any house plants....outside, well, we really cant' tell what he could be eating out there. We have a lot of gardens and many different kinds of flowers. We do have new trees out by the pool...they're Palms, but they don't look like they've been touched. A racoon or something got into our trash the other night and it sat on the lawn for a few hours before DH could pick it up...other than that...I dunno...

Maybe try keeping it in the house for a few days and see if it continues to happen. If it stops then more than likely he is getting into something outside.
If it does continue you could try keeping it outside for a few days as well and see what happens.
You may need to take it to the vet so they can determine what is going on.
I have 5 cats and have had a couple of other cats they have passed on and I have never seen or heard of this before.

Ok this sounds gross, but could the cat be getting into dirty diapers, sounds like the gel thats in them...I had a friend whos dog was forever digging in the trash for old diapers, he always wore a smile of gel...gross I know but it could happen...lol. Good luck, I hope that whatever the kitty is getting in, that it doesn't harm him.

That's a great theory, Mary, but unfortunately doesn't fit with this case. Adam keeps wiping the stuff off of Milwaukee's mouth and it keeps coming back---even when he was kept out on the porch all night long.
I just don't understand this. I've had multiple cats all my life and never heard of anything like this. I've done a little research here on the web, but can't seem to find any feline ailments with this as a symptom...

  Not sure, myself... we've had cats all my life and the worst that I've ever seen is my cat Dusty kinda foam at the mouth and it was because of Cat Treats. I think it was Friskies and there was just something in there that made him foam at the mouth, shake and act strange. As soon as we took him off those, he was fine.
Please update us on this... I am a HUGE cat lover and I want to know how Milwaukee is doing!

We had a cat that was foaming at the mouth for the lack of a better word. The next day he got worse....you had to keep a towel on your lap when he sat with you, cat was drooling like a faucet. Took him to the vet and found out he had an upper respitory infection. Gave him antibiotics and that took care of it.

How's your cat doing? Did you ever find out what the substance was he keeps getting around his mouth?
Hope he is better by now.

Thanks for asking, Eyore. He has since stopped 'gelling' lol at the mouth. He does, however, have an appt with the vet on this coming Wednesday. I'll post after that. :)

Glad he stopped doing that. Maybe the vet can shed some light on it for you.
Yes, please keep us updated on what the vet says.

UPDATE ON MILWAUKEE:
He went to the vet's yesterday for his booster shots and we asked about the clear gel. The vet told my husband that it was just saliva and that Milwaukee had a slight case of gingivitis! So, we have some meds to give him for a week and he should be just fine.
Strange! Never heard of cats with gingivitis before! lol
:)

I've never heard of that either. But glad it wasn't something more serious and that he will be ok. Thanks for updating and letting us know.

Some cats are very prone to gingivitis. Before Buddy passed we had to take him for annual cleanings. And we also used to have to use a special enzyme cleaner in his mouth daily. Glad he is feeling better ;)

Glad he's okay. :) My vet told me to brush my cats teeth. They have special toothpaste but he said even if I just brushed them with a wet toothbrush it would be better than nothing. Cats can end up with very bad teeth. My vet recommends bringing the cats in for a cleaning every now and then.
