View Full Version : G-Mail - petty vent

I am one of the lucky ones who was able to set up a G-mail account and I am slowing switching everything over to it.
This is a petty vent but, oh my goodness...I have never gotten this much spam in my life. Did G-mail sell my e-mail address to everyone under the sun?
Now I will say that most of this junk e-mail gets automatically dumped in the Spam folder but I've noticed that there is a new piece of spam every couple of minutes. I must get over 100 pieces of spam a day!
Normally, this wouldn't be a problem but I need to periodically check the spam folder because "good" e-mail has been dumped there erroneously.
Does anyone else have this problem...

I have yet to get a spam email in my gmail accounts... It must be things that you are signing up for.

I have yet to get a spam email in my gmail accounts... It must be things that you are signing up for.
But I am NOT signing up for anything. The only ones who have that e-mail address at this time are the three messages boards I visit (of which BBS is one), as well as Home Shopping Network which sends me a daily update. Plus, I have two friends who always inundate me with jokes, hoax warnings, etc. I gave them that address as well.
I use my netscape e-mail on the rare occasions that I sign up for a contest or something like that.
The thing is...you wouldn't necessarily check your Spam folder unless you were looking for something. The vast majority of this mail goes directly to the Spam folder. I have just gotten a couple of 'spam' e-mails that did bypass the filter and get into my box.
The only reason I checked the spam folder was because I was missing a 'confirmation' e-mail that I was expecting. It had gone directly to the spam folder. That's when I discovered all the mail in the spam folder. I also found notifications of "Private Messages" etc. from the boards. That's why I check the folder regularly now...to make sure I'm not missing any messages.
So...if you have gmail, check your spam folder. I can't imagine that I am the only one getting all this stuff.

I'm not talking about my in-box. I'm talking about the gmail spam folder. Do you mean that no one else is getting tons of spam in their spam folder?

I have not gotten a single unwanted spam in my in-box, they have all gone into the spam folder. I have had 1 or 2 wanted emails go into the spam folder.

Didn't they have issues w/ this in the begining because google admitted they were going to advertise to various parties what various users receive the most mail about so that they can get advertisements? Maybe I am remembering wrong... but I know it was something along these lines cause it's why I refuse to get one of the addys.

Kelsey, if I had gmail I am sure my spam folder would be full...lol..I just started feeling sorry that you are the only one that gets it.
I don't think BBS has sold us out because I might get 10 pieces of spam a week and to be honest they are from things I had signed up for, and can't get them to stop.

The free Google email. This was by invite only for Beta Testing. I think the invites have all been exhausted though.

Well...as I said, it was a petty vent because the huge majority of the spam never makes it to my inbox. The filter that Google put in place does a great job of taking care of that stuff and diverting it directly into the spam folder.
I just thought it was weird that I started getting so much when I'm very particular about who gets my 'personal' e-mail addresses.

I checked all my gmail accounts.... inbox and spam folder.... every spam folder said the same thing:
Hooray, no spam here!
SO..... one of those 3 are sending spam.....
HSN, or 1 of your 2 friends!!! (My guess is HSN!!!)
AFAIK (as far as I know) BBS has not sold our user list to anyone for marketing purposes...

Your email address can be harested from sites like BBS..... not saying from here. I just read something about this earlier today. Something about spiderbots being able to retrieve email info from sites where it is stored or posted.
Must be a way to retreive some pics too cause I notice on my high school reunion site they have these spider bots that have found pics that I know classmates have posted at other places online and have imported them over to the reunion site.
Don't know all the details of how it works but info is out there is you google it.

Harvesting only occurs if you type your email into a post.....
it doesn't get it from your registration information....
