I am moving to Phoenix next week. How much heat am I in for? I know there are some people from there that are members. Maybe we can meet up so I can get to know some people there. We will be on the West side of town by Luke AFB.

There is humidity in Phoenix? I thought it was supposed to be a dry heat. Isn't that the running joke there? I don't deal well with humidity. California is bad enough.

Hopefully things will go smooth, and we will be settled in quickly. I have gotten pretty good at moving the last few years.

We were there the first of June and it was HOT, HOT, HOT. They were having a heat wave but that meant it was 110 everyday instead of 102. Some of us did sweat, I hardly ever sweat bad. I think it's the airconditioning and going in and out that makes one sweat.

My brother and family have lived there for 30 years. In the summer you get things done early in the morning or late at night. You stay indoors in the afternoon.

Also I noticed everything is beige. They do have pretty flowers but the buildings and homes are all the same color. If you take a walk you can get lost when everything looks alike. Even the houses are built to look alike.

I don't know why they don't have more colors on houses. Must be an ordanence or something. Kind of like a club. LOL

Also be careful of the sun. My brother has had to have lots of pre-cancerous bumps removed from his face.

I have lived in Phoenix (well the Suburbs) for 9 years, but moved to Arizona (an ever hotter area-Lake Havasu) from Chicago-area. YOU FIRST SUMMER WILL SUCK. PERIOD. No, there isn't much humidity, but when it's 115, it's still 115 regardless of whether there's humidity or not. That being said, your first winter will rock!!! You'll be laughing at all of us walking aroung freezing, with winter coats on int he 55 degree weather. Watch who you make fun of though. Next winter, you'll be right there with us, freezing your butt off at 50 degrees! It's beautiful here and I would never live anywhere else. (Oh, OK except maybe Hawaii or the Bahamas, etc) The people are pretty friendly, there are wide open spaces, skiing is about 3 hours away and one of the most beautiful places on Earth, Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon (if you have kidds, take them to Slide Rock) is only a few hours drive. goog luck with your moving! Welcome to Phoenix!

P.S. at 10:56 am (according to Fox 10 website) it was 93 degrees. 18% humidity

Thanks everyone for the info. 18% humidity is not too bad. In California it hits the 100's with 40% humidity. I can deal with this.

I have never seen a scorpion. Except for the souvenier-type ones encased in a paperweight! Have never seen a snake either since I've lived in Arizona (between Lake Havasu and Phoenix) for 18 years.....

I'm from IL so I can handle the humidity. I don't like it though! This is my one and only summer here and it sucks! I hate heat. Watch out for snakes, scorpions and black widows. My husband killed a baby scorpion and a black widow on our porch last week. Don't be surprised if you find lizards in the house either. We found a small one in our bedroom in the spring.

Not everything is beige, but a lot of stuff is. LOL. Also, not all of the homes are the same colors, there are lots of different homes that are different colors. There are some neighborhoods where all of the houses are the same color and look alike, but not all neighborhoods are like that. The same goes for the way they are built. Our house is gray and there is a house on our street that is painted bright yellow, every house is a different color and style.

Snakes? Scorpions? Spiders?? Oh My. Lizards are no biggies, and we have black widows in California, and I have seen scorpions out in Barstow.

As for the houses, we call them cookie cutter houses in California. They all look the same. I would think that the beige would be to cut down on reflection and heat absorbtion.

MySonNick1, what side of Phoenix? I hear it is a good size area.

I visited there a few years ago. It was definitely a dry heat for me. I'm from Louisiana! I didn't think it was too bad. I was really shcocked as that was the first (and only) time I have been to a desert area. I couldn't get used to the fact that it is not as green as I am used to.
I actually looked for scorpions, but did not find any. It's a good thing as I would have probably totally flipped out! :D
They do have the cutest little quail there, though. I used to love to watch them. :p

I love it here! :D And you will too! I'm from TN, but the heat doesn't really bother me. I've been here a little over 3 years and I would never go back to the humidty! The 1st few weeks we were here tho, I thought I was gonna dry up, lol! I had use saline drops for my contacts, 'cuz they felt so dry.

You won't be too far from me, I'm in Northwest Phoenix, and I would love to meet you! :)

We lived at Williams AFB before it closed. I loved it there. HOWEVER, our first summer there took a bit of getting used to. I had horrible headches from the heat. I finally got used to them (and then we moved). And do be on the lookout for bugs. I did find a scorpion in my shoe once. Be on the safe side, and give them a shake before you step in.
By the way, is the JC Pennys outlet store still there? I LIVED there. lol

I always wondered why the back yards had walls around them. This time I was told the pets become cyote food if you don't keep them in the walled area. Cyotes won't jump walls so the pets are safe. Not sure about cats since outside cats are hard to keep in a yard. Same goes in the mountains in California. My SIL said people move in with animals and they turn up missing. They don't realize the cyotes love to eat their pets.

My SIL in Phoenix has a friend who has had a scorpion bite her when she put on her shoes. Another one bit her out in their yard so be careful. Some scorpoins are more poisionus than others. I think they stay under ground during the day cause of the heat but come out at night.

Unless you have undisputed proof that a person is not who they say they are, and have forwarded it to the mods, there is no reason to bring any of this up on the boards.

Welcome to Phx, I live in Mesa Az which is pretty far east of where you will be living, but I think that it would be great to have a get together sometime for all of us Phx people.
And Freeplease I am sorry to have to tell you this but to the best of my knowledge the JC Penny outlet closed down a few yrs ago, I now have to go all the way back to Kansas to go to one.
Please let us know when you get all setteled in HVANWINKLE and if at all possible take advantage of the evenings to do your moving, you will find that it goes much smoother that way.

I haven't been there for a few months, but I believe there's another JC Penney's outlet at AZ Mills Mall down in Tempe.

I live in NW Phoenix, and we get black widows all the time in our yard too, but never had one in the house yet. Lizards we have plenty of too. I've lived here for 6 years and never seen a scorpion or tarantula though. Some people have seen rattlesnakes, but I've never seen one in town yet either. Termites are pretty common out here too...subterranian termites. Not like they're dangerous, but can cost some money preventing or getting rid of them.

Yeah, pretty hot in the summers, but I'd take it any day over the cold winters up north. Here at least in the early morning or at night you can go outside in the summer, while for example in a Minnesota winter, you don't escape the cold by waiting for a different time of day to go outside.

I heard a few reasons for the walls around the yards, so I'm not sure about the truth behind any or all of them. I've heard they've been called "privacy fences" (as compared to "view fences") since many homes have relatively small yards in the tightly packed communities out here. For instance, it helps prevent the view into our neighbor's greatroom from our kitchen...so instead we have a shot of the concrete wall! I've also heard about the protecting pets. I've also heard someone say it was to help cut down on erosion and dust kickup in the summers by adding barriers. We get some pretty blinding dust storms in the summer, with a lot getting picked up from the open/undeveloped areas.

Hey AZROCKY!! I got an ad today for the JC Penny outlet store. How funny is that? Anyway, they list the addresses on it, and there IS one in Tempe. How cool! It's 5000 Arizona Mills Circle. In the Arizona Mills Mall.
Just passing on the good news. ;) Let the bargains commence.

I haven't been to AZ Mills in months, I need to go! :) I really love their Rave and Charlotte Russe outlet stores! :D

I'm only about 4 miles from Metro Center, so that's usually where I go.
