TRENTON, N.J. -- New Jersey's top civil rights official has ruled that taverns cannot offer discounts to women on "ladies nights," agreeing with a man who claimed such gender-based promotions discriminated against men.

The ruling came after the man complained that women could get into Cherry Hill's Coastline nightclub for free and receive discounted drinks while men had to pay a $5 cover charge and full price for drinks.

The director of New Jersey's Division on Civil Rights rejected arguments by the nightclub that ladies' nights are a legitimate promotion. The ruling applies statewide.

Judges in Pennsylvania and Iowa have made similar rulings. But courts in Illinois and Washington state have found ladies nights are permissible.
