Survey: grilled cheese or cheese toastie

I'm originally from Decatur, IL. Talking to my friend the other day, I discovered that (apparently) calling a "grilled cheese sandwich" a "cheese toastie" is only a Decatur, IL thing. Is this true? What do you call it where you are from? Having been born and raised in Decatur I find it hard to switch the names. Please tell me I'm not the only one who says cheese toastie outside of Decatur, IL! :confused:

A girl I work with said the same thing. So as of now, it's still just a Decatur, IL thing. How weird! I now live only an hour and a half away and people look at me crazy if I say Cheese toastie.

We always said Toasted Cheese - no matter if they were broiled or in a skillet. I really like them better done in the broiler, though - then add a slice of tomato!

Grilled Cheese for me in Minneapolis and Chicago, but when I lived in Amsterdam, a "Toastie", so sometimes I say that, too!

to me a grill cheese is made on top of the stove and a cheese toastie is made in one of those sandwhich makers that seal the edges of the bread like a pocket :rolleyes:

HEYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY I grew up calling them CHEESE TOASTIES !!! My DH always made fun of me for calling them that so now I call them grilled cheese LOL My mother still calls them cheese toasties! :D

Wow...thanks everyone. I guess my friend was right. Cheese Toastie seems to be just a Decatur, IL thing. Have to remember to start calling them Grilled Cheese. Oh Well, at least they still taste the same :D

I grew up around Yorkshire England calling them cheese toasties, but now I'm trying to adjust to California, where we call them grilled cheese sandwiches (now where's the fun in that?). I've recieved more than one humourous reaction from waitresses since relocating here, let me tell you. :)

All right, first reply to a 2 yr old thread. Why? I was researching the term cheese toastie! I am from Decatur and some of us history freaks here have wondered about the origin of the term. It is evidently not only in Decatur, but in a lot of Macon County. I see on this thread that perhaps it came from England? Could anyone tell me more about that? And don't change your ways for Californians. Stand up, be proud, say "Cheese Toastie", please. Then explain what it is quickly before some doof puts a cold slice of cheese between two pieces of toast!

I am orginally from Detroit, Mi and they call it grilled cheese there. I now live in Tyler,TX and they still call it grilled cheese. I never heard of anyone calling to cheese toatie. That's new to me!:)

Oh my God. I haven't heard that term in probably 40 years. I was born in Decatur, but my parents moved when I was only a few months old. My mother used to call them cheese toasties when I was little. I guess she changed it after many years in Dayton. I remember when I was 18 my little brother asked me to make him a grilled cheese for lunch so he must not have known about it.
