View Full Version : Got my computer fixed & for only 20 bucks--here's what he found

The "Computer Guy", that's what he calls himself charged only 20 dollars instead of 150, usual price. It's good to have connections. LOL :p

He also gave us a report---

The computer had 42% free system resources. That means 58% is already busy doing something else. ( That is just going online and nothing else.)

He found Gator--(course, I use it to fill in forms) Bargain Buddy, Comet Cursor. He said all of these programs are spyware and/or adware. They will slow down your PC and your internet connection and can cause your PC to crash. He removed them. (Now how am I going to fill out forms? Guess I'll try Roboform unless something better is out there).

He found "Spyware Nuker". This program is simply a rip-off of "Spybot Search and Destroy". SSD is free, but SN is not. When SSD is updated the updated get used to create updates for SN. This means SN is always several versions behind SSD. I removed it. (OK with me). :)

He installed "Spybot Search and Destroy". Ran it and found 546 problems and fixed them. It also discovered some of your network setting had been changed by malicious software, it fixed them. (Yeah) :)

Could not find a working anti-virus program. (We didn't have one?) (Oh NO)

Installed Symantec Corporate Anti-Virus. found and removed or cleaned 21 virus infected files. Make sure you keep it up to date by doing frequent Live Updates. (That is fine if I knew how to do them)

Ran "CWShredder" and removed setting changes made by "Cool Web Search" (duh whatever that means. LOL) :)

When done booted system and checked system resources, 77% free. This is not a bad number. Zone Alarm is taking some resources, but it is a very good program to have so no problems there. The DSL software takes a few % but is needed. If you use eFax often, then the resources it takes are not a big deal. If you do not use it then the lost resources are a waste, consider removing it.

Scanned and defragged hard drive. Found large number of bad sectors, a sign that the hard drive is failing. Considering speed of PC I would suggest planning to replace PC in future. As always I recommend IBM and DELL for a new PC. (We may get a laptop if we get anything new.)

Thought I'd put this report on here if it helps others with their computers. He worked on it for 3 hours. The 20 dollars is "Annoyance Charge" to keep friends and family from bugging him to often. LOL :D :D

I have the same question about Back Web Agent. Spyware Sweeper says its there. But I cannot delete it. I have a feeling it has to do with Windows Update, but I am not positive.

69.20.62.53/yyy2...........with htpp: in front of it and html at the end of it! there reason i wrote it out like this is because i WOULD NOT want anyone clicking on it! it is a form of spy ware and it connected to my Hkey_claases_roots..registry key file

I tried everything to get rid of it

spybot
adware

So i even went to my registry keys and deleted it to get rid of it... After that i couldnt connect online....GUESS WHAT!!

Yep! You guessed it!! I had to reformat..It took me about 3 hours to get back online! Iam exhausted..lol! going to bed! night! chat with you all later!!

KEEP A REAL CLOSE ON EYE ON WHAT WEBSITES YOU VISIT! I think i got this bugger visiting a hollywood gossip site! :(

Uninstall it from your add/ remove programs in your control panel. It is not a necessary program, and you will find your computer, and your internet will run a little faster without it.

Thanks everyone but now I'm worried on how to keep it bug free. Does anyone know? Like not clicking on unfamiliar sites? But what site is familiar unless you have clicked on it and looked around? I like surfing. That is the way I find interesting sites. So all of them have spyware and let it attatch to your computer?

What sites do I stay away from? That is the important question. In search sites lots of sites come up and if you are searching for something you need to click into a bunch of them.

And removing programs is not so easy for lots of us. I tried removing Comet Cursor lots of times but couldn't. My computer would not remove it when I clicked "remove" and "uninstall". Maybe I was doing it wrong but having a computer guy do it can run into big bucks. Just glad I only had to pay 20 instead of 150.

I run Ad Aware on a daily basis and I have Norton Anti-Virus that I also run on a daily basis. I spend time dialing into other people's computers and you never know what they have on their systems that might get into yours.

Some on here use Roboform. My DH says I could use the form on MSN, my home page, but I don't know how to access it.

Hope others on here have some ideas. I think Roboform isn't spyware like Gator but I'm not sure.

I have this on my puter too, it always says it has to do with my Kodak Digi Cam???

You better write down all your passwords before you get rid of Gator. I usually use the same passwords in different combinations but if none of the passwords work, you can always send for your passwords from the sites. They all have a "forgot my password" and you give them your email address or answer your secret question and they will send the password to you. Not too hard just time consuming. Write them down before uninstalling Gator and then put them into the next form filler you choose.
