Do you have stomach pains because of it? I get stomach pains that double me over! Something has to be causing it and I was wondering if it could be the hernia. The pains even wake me up during the night and the only way I can get some relief is to drink milk. Can I take some kind of OTC stomach pills to help? The pains are at the main top of my stomach and kinda in the middle and goes over to the right a little.
At first my doctor said it was gallstones and removed my gallbladder but I was still having the pains and thats when he sent me for stomach x-rays and I had to drink barium and thats when they found the hernia. Although when the nurse called she said they didn't find anything and I told her that something had to be causing the pain and then she said "Oh, well we did find a small hernia but it's not big enough to cause you any trouble". Umm, how does she know what causes me trouble or makes me sick?? lol But anyway, I was just trying to figure out whats causing all of this. I get sick to my stomach almost every day and the pains are just killing me. If I get up and don't eat something within the first hour or so then I'm doubled over. It woke me up at 6:30 this morning and after I had some milk it quit.
Could it be something other than a hernia? Help! LOL

hmmm
i had gallstones, they took them out. When they did the imaging for my stones, they noticed I also have a hiatal hernia and the doc said that reflux must be killing you. What reflux? I asked. Come time find out, I have severe GERD, up to the cervical esophogus. Baiscally up to right behind my mouth. I had no idea, I had been so sick from the stones and other things, it never bothered me, and still doesn't. So I have to be exceptionally careful because it doesn't hurt me so I have no danger signal from my body if damage is occurring.
Anyway, back on track...Apparently GERD comes along with the hernia, because you're not able to close your throat right so stuff comes back up. You probably have a refulx issue and all the acid is causing your pain & discomfort. Bring it up with your doc.
aoh yeah, what raven said too. the acid can contribute to ulcers, so bring that up too when you see doc.
I have notice it's a triple combination that most people have....GERD, hiatal hernia, gallstones, so i bet you have the reflux too, & strongly suggest you talk to the doc.

Thanks everyone. I do believe that I have the acid reflux problem because at times its almost like I can hear it squirting up into my chest and throat. I know that sounds gross but its the only way I can explain it. Then a few seconds later the pain sets in. :( I'm not really sure if thats how the acid reflux does or not though.
I guess I need to find me a doctor here and see what I can find out.

yup got one to....found out when they checked me out with the small scope they put down your throat....yuck....but they sprayed it so i didn't feel it going down to check out my poor tummy....also got the reflux....yuck again....feels horrid when you bring stuff up....yuck....the doc put me on some medicine for the acid reflux cuz the otc wasn't enough to help things out....the pain i had has calmed down some....always felt like i had something coming out from under my ribs....hurt like heck....so i pushed it down and in and it made me feel a little better....yup they go together for sure....just watch the caffine you drink and other foods that could be bothering you and making it worse at times....sometimes that is hard to do as some of those foods are just toooo darnnnn goodddd to miss...hehe
best advice is get back to the doc and tell him what you want....the pain to go away and the acid reflux to settled down....he can give you a scrip for that for sure....good luck!!!!

My grandfather has had 2 of these. Getting to the point where he could not eat anything w/out choking.
He's had this done 2 x's to see what the obstruction is/was:

I've had the 1st one done several times to check for ulcers, GERD....not painful just sounds like it.
My grandfather has also had this: http://health.yahoo.com/health/encyclopedia/003888/0.html
It's done to see why you can't swallow. I know there's another procedure he's had that enlarged his esophagus so he wouldn't have/get the gag reflex....if that's what you're having.
I would check into it if I were you. To be honest it gets worse at the time goes by....Thus, you eat less, can't drink well.
Good luck

Thanks y'all :) Well I've been wanting to lose weight and I need to cut down on the caffeine so maybe this is going to help. LOL All jokes aside, this really hurts. My MIL told me to try Prilosec (sp?) or Zantac and see if any of those help until I can see a doctor. Thanks for all the replies and I'll build my nerve up to see a doctor pretty soon. LOL I am soooo scared of doctors. :o
