A couple of months ago we had a really strange thing happen. In one afternoon we discover that one of our dogs cannot walk, one of our cows is dead and her ear has been chewed clean off, another of our cows is down and injured and cannot get up,and my brother-in-law ,who is just up the road from us, has a cow down with a broken leg.We cannot figure for the life of us what has happened. Before the week was over ,our downed cow had died and we found two of our newborn calves dead and nearly completely eaten. :(
A few days later , the guy who rents our tenant house tells us that when he was down in the pasture that he had a run in with two "wild" dogs and that when he shouted at them ,they came running at him growling.A few days after that , my brother-in-law sees two dogs fitting the same description chasing our cows and tells us.Finally ,my husband happens to see those two dogs and realizes that they belong to a guy through the woods from us.So he goes over and explains what has been going on and the guy says "Next time you catch them doing it ,just shoot them". My husband tells him that we have already lost x amount of cattle and he doesn't want to wait till they do it again and shoot them. That he wants him to tie the dogs. The guys tells him that he can't tie but one of them because the other one bites him whenever he tries to tie it! What freaks me out is that this guy already knew the dogs were vicious and kept them around anyway! He manages a mobile home park that has little kids running all over.
We have already spoken to the sheriff's office just to ask what we have a right to do and we were told to shoot the dogs. Our tenant shows up this morning and tells us that he heard a calf hollering for dear life (turns out was the one just born yesterday) and he drove down to the field and there were the same two dogs holding the little calf down biting it all over. It's mother's ear is ripped to shreds and bleeding.I guess they hurt her when she was trying to save her baby.Well when they saw him they ran and the calf jumped up and walked off so maybe it is going to be ok.
My husband went and brought the owner over here to see what his dogs have done been looking for them all morning and can't track them down. The owner has plans to shoot them when he finds them.I am just so glad they so far these dogs haven't happened upon a small child.Because they will team up on anything they come across and try to kill it.

You guys need to go out and hunt those dogs down. They could very well be rabid. You also need to sue the pants off that guy. He has no right to allow his dogs to be running around doing that kind of damage. Lord help a little child if those dogs get near. Go and hunt them down and SHOOT THEM. DONT WAIT FOR THAT GUY!!

Is there an animal control you could call. Maybe they would do something. I can't believe the sheriff's office not going over there and doing something. I would also find out who the owners are of the mobile home park and call them and let them know what kind of animals he has.

I assume the cattle are fenced in, do you know where the dogs are getting in at? If you can find where they are coming in at, can you put snare at that spot. Thats what DH used to catch coyotes with that used to get in and go after the babys. Its an idea.

They are fenced in with electric fencing, the dogs can just go under.I would love to set a trap for the little turds but most likely I would just end up snagging one of my own dogs. And I would also hate to get one of the neighborhood dogs that come around but cause no harm.We haven't had a problem like this in years. When DH went and found the owner yesterday he said at first the guy said he just didn't have the heart to shoot those dogs. And the guy's own father was there and told him that he really has no choice and then informed his son that those dogs have also killed a bunch of cattle of another local farmer. He told him that since they killed once and got a taste for blood that they will not stop.So by now ,those dogs have killed thousands of dollars worth of cattle.
Last night we couldn't find the baby calf that the dogs had down yesterday. :( But the mama cow was acting all nervous like maybe she had it hid somewhere.I hope that is it.As far as I know , they still haven't been found and shot yet.I'm mad about our cows and we have lost a lot of money, but a cow is just a cow. What I am really worried about is them happening across some little kid outside playing alone or something. That's what keeps me awake at night.
Thanks for all of y'alls help and I will post as soon as I know something more.

Can't you sue him for your monetary lose?

I agree "SUE HIM" or threaten too. Let him know that he has until a certain day to put those dogs down or you will sue. Put a little fire under his butt to get the job done!!

Keep us posted!

If he owns the dogs, know they are vicious, then he is liable for the $ you have lost.

A cow is just a cow? Maybe, but to be mauled by dogs is cruel. I hope y'all find the dogs and shoot them.Hopefully no other animals or heaven forbid children get hurt by the dogs.

We love our animals and take good care of them. What I meant by "a cow is just a cow" is that us losing a cow is nothing compared to someone maybe losing a child to those crazy dogs.We can hold him liable for the times we have actually caught the dogs or have witnesses to other times that saw the dogs. But like the first time anything happened, when we had a cow dead ,one injured,a hurt dog and BIL had a cow with a broken leg, even though we feel sure those dogs were responsible , we cannot prove it.

Go out to the pasture and just stake it out until the dogs show up. They have found a place where they can make an easy kill so they will come back. Can you pasture your cows nearer the house or in a barn for the present at night?

I would get several locals together and just form a hunting party for those dogs. They are killing your neighbors animals as well so it's only a matter of time before they start going after people. At least if you know they are dead, you dont have to worry about them dragging off some three year old who can't defend himself.

There is really no way to put them closer to our house. And the thing with these dogs is that they show up during the day and go home at night.I hope they went hope last night and had a shotgun waiting.

ok.. here is my opinion. shoot the SOB that let em run to begin with.. then have animal control get the dogs..and have them put to sleep.
by the way.. the owner of said dogs? when you shoot him, make sure you hand him his sign first.. you know the one that says STUPID
ok.. good luck...oh and hey make him PAY fopr the cattle that were infjured/killed. then shoot his ass through the sign.
Ciao!

that is horrible. that man should be held accountible for the damage his animals are doing. you should sit out there with your animals and wait for his dogs to come and shoot them. he don't want to do it, then somebody has too. and i am with you, what is going to happen if those dogs get hold of a child??????????

I'd be calling a lawyer first thing in the morning. That man should have to pay for the cattle you've lost! Who knows how many other farms around have lost livestock due to these dogs, I bet if you'd ask around there'd be a bunch of people pissed at the jerkoff.

When we went down last night to feed , the little baby calf was there with his mother. The dogs haven't been back so far and there has been no sign of them at the owner's home the times we have driven by.I think he must have shot them but we haven't seen him home to ask.My husband's aunt passed away late last night :( so we will be busy with the funeral and such for the next few days. But so far all is ok concerning those dogs.
