I have been dealing with this crap for 2 years, since my daughter started school, seems like everytime i turn around the nurse is calling me to come get her. I am so fed up with it, I just want to shave her head bald, but then she will get abuse at school, for looking like a little boy. I have 6 kids, and she's the only one that gets it. She's got short hair now, so I don't want to cut it any further. What do I do to get rid of these things, it just seems like the shampoo's they have on the market dont work, and even the prescription from the doctor doesn't help either. I just feel like burning my house down, I won't actually do that, but sometimes it comes to mind. Thanks for letting me vent. I feel better now................. :mad:

When my daughter was in first grade she got the lice..I didnt even know what they where...anyway she had hair down to her knees and I am not kidding she really did, so after picking for 6 hours I knew it wasnt something I ever wanted to do again..so from then on her hair was put up and sprayed with a ton of hair spray and she didnt get them anymore...since then I have heard of using lots of hairspray would help keep the lice at bay..

If your other kids are not getting them, I would bet she is getting them in her classroom.

Is she the only one in that class getting them?
Have all the children in that class been checked for lice?

Lice sucks. Don't use the over the counter stuff, and don't use the prescription stuff. I am 40 years old and never rarely leave the house. I got lice. My hair is to my knees. It was a pain in the butt. My doctor told me to go to the health department and get a non-toxic formula to get rid of lice. I think it costs around $8.00, so it isn't really expensive. It comes in a kit and it worked for me. Then I washed all the bedsheets, pillows, vacuumed all the carpet and furniture. Washed down stuff with bleach (where it wouldn't stain).

My doctor also told me of a really inexpensive treatment. Crisco. Coat the hair really good, especially at the tips and the scalp. Cover with plastic wrap and let set for several hours. I forget exactly how many. Might be overnight. The Crisco smothers the little buggers and they die. Then, with the Crisco still in the hair, use the lice comb. Rinse, wash and rinse. Comb again. It leaves the hair really healthy too. She said mayonaise does the same thing.

Good luck.

My best friend use to babysit for a lot of kid and always ended up getting lice as an adult and would use mayo and those lice treatments. Finally just stopped babysitting because should couldn't stand getting lice.

Thanks for all the advice, and hopefully this will be the last time. The nurse wont say if anyone else in the classroom gets it, its a confidentiality thing. I did soak her hair in oil overnight, and I havent seen anymore live ones, the nit combs pretty much work for crap, but I got what I could out with it, and thank god I have long fingernails. lol. I wish I had the experience to home school her, cuz this is where I would rather keep her, then in school. It's like they just cling to her even when you just mention the word they kinda just appear lol.

I feel for ya.. My daughter kept getting them all last year .. She couldnt get rid of them. I think somone must have had them in her class and just kept giving them to her because she hasnt had them once this year. I tried everything too. The health store does have a safer treatment and they also have a spray treatment that you put in her hair everyday that is suppossed to keep them away the only problem is it smells horrible, but it works. Then again, if somone in her class is giving it to her then its gonna be really hard to get rid of them just pray whoever it is isnt in her class next yr. Also someone said use Mayonaise, It does work too and i would leave it in overnight. The funny thing is the mayonaise i think makes a good conditioner for your hair. whenever i had to do everyones , i always prefered the mayo cause after washing my hair was always soft and shinny. Good luck

Hi,I read in Woman's Day a few weeks ago that if your child keeps getting lice over and over to ask your doctor for an antibiotic.When the lice get the blood that has the antibiotic in it , it kills something in their stomach that they need to survive.Also, to keep them away ,try combing a few drops of tea tree oil through her hair.

nonononon! an ER doc told me this and it works!! get some coconut shampoo..** ie suave works** wash your hair, then do a vinegar & water rinse, then take the lice comb and go over the hair thouroghly.. within a few days..it's gone. i never use the over the counter or scrip treatments.. i use the above, something in the coconut shampoo kills the bugs.. and the vinegar and water rinse loosens the glue that hold the eggs to the hair shaft.
then just wash the sheets and such as you would normaly, and vaccuum the hell outa your home. maybe get some of that spray for the couch and what not.

i hated lice when my son got them yrs ago. thank the GODS my daughter with her just over waist length hair hasn't brought any home..
and she sleeps in my bed..so..if she gets em? i will end up with them. i'm fraid i'd have to hurt the lazy assed moms out there who's kids have perpetual lice. c'mon ...it doesn't take all that much effort to deal with this..

anyway good luck.. and by the by? i'd start REALY doccumenting these episodes where they send your kid home.. call me paranoid but sounds like they could be building a bit of a case to perhaps use against you at some point..better to be safe than sorry YOU document it as well..and then after say 3 times of them sending ehr home and you treating her hair.. take the info to the health dept. and speak to the director.. get this taken care of. SOMEONE is letting this get out of hand.. and needs be dealt with.
g'luck!

I had a friend who's kids kept getting this. I went and got 4 cans of shaving cream :) Baby Oil and Head Wraps. I covered the childrens hair with shaving cream ( and their face hehehe) Put a wrap on it and sent them out back for a hour to play. then took the water hose( it was summer) and washed their hair out. then put oil on it wrap back on for a hour. washed again and combed all them boogers out! worked great! kids loved it! it was fun for them! :D

once its gone, hairspray keep them away as well. When one of my older girls kept getting it, I started putting hairspray in her hair (old wives tale) and she stopped getting it. Something about the lice suffocate in the spray.

I feel for all of you!
We have been battling this all year ewith our
youngest son. He keeps bring it home from school!
To top it all off the teacher has carpet in her room!

There's only two other white kids in his in his class, one of which we have sent home before!

We put lotion in his hair and it seems to help keep them out as well as condition any dry scap he may have.

Hope this info helps!

Wow, thanks for all the advice, so far I havent seen anymore since I got them all out, and I will try everything that you all have suggested, they say that the critters get immune to the nix, rid etc. If that's the case they really need to make something else, but I like the home remedy's much better, and its a lot cheaper. ;) But the school tells you that you have to use the over the counter stuff or the script, else nothing will kill the bugs, obviously they just go by a book, and not what really happens in your home.

I think this is rather harsh. I have a dear friend who went through this and it lasted over a year.

She went to incredible lengths to eliminate the problem. Everyone's hair was thrashed by the end of the year because of the numerous treatments they had used. Plus...she used the prescription med every day for a week...only to find out that it wasn't suppose to be used more than once or week (or something like that). They replaced like everything in their house attempting to get rid of the lice problem.

Her daughter just had hair that attracted those pesky buggers. She would catch it from someone and would keep bringing it home.

My friend was hardly lazy and certainly did all the recommended preventative things...plus a few that were never even heard of. She was ready to burn her house down because she was so frustrated.

Use mayonnaise .. not Miracle Whip and not light mayo. That is what my doctors nurse told me to do and it worked. You put it on their head and than tie a plastic bag on top of their head and leave on for at least an hour.

Last school year my daughter got lice and I used everything .. besides prescription stuff cause my doctor said it is no better than the OTC stuff .. I used brand name and generic and none of it worked .. mayo is what did the trick.

"I think this is rather harsh. I have a dear friend who went through this and it lasted over a year."

obviously your freind is NOT one of those moms i was referring to.

look i knew a family.. my gf was dating this married guy **yeah a whole other theread on that one** anyway..his kids had lice so bad.. you could see them crawling.. in their braided hair.. it was foul.. thats how me & my son got lice. the rid made us sick. so i used the coconut suave shampoo and vinegar and water rinse, and then sprayed anywhere those kids had been. let me tell you they had FLEAS as well as lice crawling in their hair...so when i say "lazy assed moms" i mean the ones like theirs..she plainly did not care. and yes i got a look at their house, i stood at the door for all of a minmute and ran back outside!! yeah it was that foul. so..please understand i am meaning this example not your freind. and i DO feel for her. a few montsh later.. when we finaly got an apt in fl.. and moved out of the homeless shelter.. i didna have the $$ to turn the water in the apt. on...so we .. got water from various sources.. thing was.. my lil man ..i found 1 lice on him.. i didn't know what else to do.. so we shaved his head. later family helped me get the water turned on.. but..still.. i have been there. and what i mourn over to this day? is that ,...y son had curly hair.. after we chaved it.. it never curled again..
i do feel for your freind.

ciao!

IT is so funny someone started this thread beacause.............

My oldest was sent home yesterday with live bugs :eek: :eek: :o :mad:

I also used the mayo and let me tell you the vinager water rinse makes a HUGE difference!!!! I did everyones hair, washed every linen we own, vaccuumed and sprayed all beds, couches, and floors! OMG AM I TIRED TODAY!! Whew, I took her back today and after a 30 min inspection she was clean, BUT I asked her if her intire class had been checked and when she said NO!! I turned around and left, I am not going through all of this again. So they are rechecking her class and she will go back tommorow!!

My kids onlu have 4 weeks left of school, and I just said the other day, I think we have made it w/o lice this year, MAN ME AND MY BIG OLE MOUTH!!

Well its gone now and I pray we dont have a return episode!!

~~~***Also I wanted to add a link, this is what the Dr's prescribe here.....
It is called Ovide, and it contains Malithion!! It is the most horrid stuff on earth and I cant believe we are suppossed to put it on our childrens heads!!??!!
Ovide *head lice treatment* (http://www.healthtouch.com/bin/EContent_HT/drugShowLfts.asp?fname=usp0530.htm&title=Malathion+Topical&cid=HTDRUG)
Here is a page about what malithion does :O:O !!! (http://www.chem-tox.com/malathion/research/)
The thing that alot of ppl I talk to seem to forget is to re do the hair in one week, becuase any missed eggs will have hatched.
I hope they find some kind of immunization for lice some day!
I don't have kids in school anymore but I think if I did I would do a mayonaisse treatment once a week whether there was an outbreak or not just to be safe. I don't know why we have such rampant lice outbreaks anymore, when I was a kid in school we never ever had an outbreak and half of us did not even have running water at home. Maybe its because there are more of us these days. Darn just reading this thread makes my head itch! LOL
