Boy, 23 months, dies of beating; Mom's boyfriend sought in death

Baton Rouge police are looking for a man who is accused of brutally beating his girlfriend's toddler son, who died of his injuries Thursday. Police spokesman Cpl. Don Kelly said Eric Johnson, 26, is wanted in connection with the death of Dalyen Chapman, who was a month shy of his second birthday.

Johnson, who was living with Dalyen's mother in a Scotlandville area apartment, is accused of beating, slapping and kicking the child Wednesday night and again Thursday morning, Kelly said. Johnson is also accused of beating Dalyen's mother when she tried to protect her child, Kelly said.

Johnson is accused of repeatedly knocking the child down, standing him up and knocking him down again, Kelly said.

Kelly said Dalyen had a medical condition that necessitated him breathing through a tracheal tube and eating through a feeding tube.
Dalyen's medical problems worsened the effects of his injuries, Kelly said.

Kelly said paramedics found Dalyen unconscious inside the apartment after his mother called 9-1-1 about 10:30 a.m. He died about 2:30 p.m. at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center.

Johnson is believed to be driving a white and blue, 1988 Chevrolet van with license plate V954241. He is wanted on counts of first-degree murder, cruelty to a juvenile and second-degree battery, Kelly said.

Johnson is a black man with gold teeth, about 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing 172 pounds. He has two tattoos on his right arm -- one says "murder" and the other shows a skull and cross.

Johnson might be carrying a handgun, Kelly said.

That poor, poor baby boy with the trach and the feeding tube. He had to have had a lot of pain in his short lifetime just from medical problems. Wonder if they Xrayed his little body, how many old broken bones he'd had in the past from previous beatings.

I am like a momma bear. If ANYONE ever touched my child like that, it would be the last thing they touched. I am sorry, I would risk being beat to death trying to save my child. Not to far from here in Clinton, Illinois 3 small children were left to drown in a car. The a few weeks ago 20 miles away a dog drags a newborns stillborn body into a rural yard. What the HELL is wrong with this world?????? People are leaving these babies to die or they are killing them. I have a 22 month old little girl. If I accidentally scratch her when I am changing her clothes it breaks my heart and I want to cry. I would NEVER EVER ONCE think about hurting her in a way these parents in the news have. She is my angel I never thought I would have. I wont be able to have any more kids, and she is my heart.

My thoughts exactly I would have killed that b_____ or died trying. Why do these women stay with these abusive horrible men??? I would leave and live out on the street before I stayed with someone that was abusing my child...I just don't understand...Another story that turns my stomach. I say throw him in jail and let the inmates beat him to death...sorry but this is how I feel. This crap has got to stop.

Women have to try and get it in their heads to respect themselves and wait for a nice man to come along. If he doesn't, he doesn't. Why keep dating and relying on losers?

I understand loneliness, frustrations, and financial problems drive some women to seek any port in a storm, but is your baby's life worth it?

Just an observation....I noticed when a man commits a crime against a child. (In a alot of these threads) Everyone wants to kill him, but when a woman does the same people pitty her. Why is that?

Even if the man is found insane no one screams he wasn't in his right mind, it wasn't him who committed the crime. Let a woman be found insane people say, "Oh that poor women she didn't know what she was doing. A mental illness will cause you do to things you wouldn't normally do if you were sane. So, it wasn't her fault she took the children out side and bashed their heads in. That poor woman needs help."

Hell why not punish her also. People want to punish the fathers of the wives who kill their children. The husbands are either asleep or at work when the wives kill their children. The husband is guilty just because he's married to the woman. So, why can't guilt by association play when the genders are switched?

IMHO It makes no difference what gender a person may be if they murder a child. They should be put to death, no questions asked.......If they are insane or mentally ill theres no sense in wasting tax dollars to try and help these people. You can't help a mentally ill person by putting them in an institution or prison. All we are doing is wasting thousands of dollars on useless lives. Who have no right in living in my opinion. Once you kill a child, your rights should be taken away. In America those who kill children have more rights than anyone.

Like I have said before, People need to be held accountable for their actions. The insanity BS is just that, BS. I have no pitty for anyone who takes a childs life...I do not care if they are mentally ill, it's no excuse to take a childs life.

Johnson Turns Himself In, Faces Murder Charges


The man wanted in the beating death of a toddler is now in police custody. Authorities say 26-year-old Eric Johnson turned himself in Monday afternoon. Johnson is now charged with the murder of 23-month-old Daylen Chapmen.

Daylen already had a medical condition requiring breathing and feeding tubes. Johnson, who was living with the boy's mother in an apartment in Baton Rouge, is accused of beating, slapping and kicking the child the night of Wednesday April 14th and the morning of Thursday April 15th.

Authorities say Johnson also is accused of beating Daylen's mother when she tried to protect the baby. Paramedics found the boy unconscious inside the apartment after his mother called authorities. He died about four hours later at a local hospital.

Suspected child killer Eric Johnson turned himself in late Monday afternoon, according to the Baton Rouge Police Department. Johnson is accused of kicking and slapping his girlfriend's 23-month-old son, Dalyen Chapman, police said. The toddler died after the April 15 incident. Johnson is also accused of beating the child's mother when she tried to help her son.

Police had been seeking Johnson since the child's death. "The beating was very brutal, very deliberate," said Cpl. Don Kelly of BRPD. "It did not appear to be a case where there was somebody who just snapped and lost their temper for a few seconds. This was a very brutal beating and kicking of a 2-year-old child."

Johnson is accused of repeatedly knocking the child down, standing him up and knocking him down again, according to Kelly.

OMG you want to put the mother in jail becuase she was beaten while trying to protect her son?

We had a man sentenced to 20 years for killing his child. There is a difference between insanity and people who kill their children because they just want them to be quiet. There is a difference between someone who has a history of mental illness and hears voices, than that same person who gives their child an overdose of codine because they are tired of hearing the child cry or they don't want to be bothered to cuddle the child and find out what is wrong.

This man will go to jail and might end up back out on the streets in a few years. The insane to go mental hospitals and are never allowed out again.
