I just got a paper from my sons school asking for parents to supply some materials for a class project, tissues, and some Easter candy, I really don't mind helping out, but they just did a fund rasier not even a week ago come on. This has been the 3rd on already this year. What do they do with the money they collect from the fund raisers? Every time I turn around the school is always wanting money for something. We haven't had alot of money latley and we do what we can for the school, but I feel like screaming. LOL!!! ANd to top it all off my son has been charging breakfast so now I owe money for that and I feed him at home before he goes to school, I was sooooo mad at him. The school called me and told me they have sent a note home about this 3 times and my son was hiding them from me in his pants pockets. Sorry this was just bugging me and I had to get this out.

oh i would be mad about your ds charging breakfast too. Specially if u feed him before school. Tell him next time, he'll be paying for it. As far as school fund raisers, u have every right to ask the principal or even the Administrative Assistant where the money to those fund raisers go.

Tell them to contact the Lottery officials in your area (if your state has a lottery) and demand the money that was supposed to be the magical cure all for the shortages in the schools. LOL!

with 5 kids in school.... uggghhhhh

mine kids are in 2nd, 4th, 6th,7th,and 9th and they are constantly needing supplies for one thing or another. Our schools sent out a supply list at the end of last year for this year, which includes a separate list for art supplies. Then this yr they sent a new list home because they got a new art teacher and she wanted dif stuff! Then to find out it all goes in a tote and everyone uses it. Not that I mind my kids sharing but man thats a lot of stuff. Seems like atleast one of my kids is doing a project lately for one reason or another. I just had to go buy rubberbands and string last night for one of them. Plus they are constantly doing fundraisers as well. Having one next week as a matter of fact. And I dont care how much kleenex you send in it never seems to be enough...lol. My kids were required to bring in 2 boxes each at the beginning of the year then they asked for more after Christmas break.

didnt mean to whine on your vent .... just Im right there with ya hun

I have no problem sending things they actually need but my vent is stuff they don't need, my DD is in 9th grade and I can't believe what we need to shell out money for, like in spanish they decided they need to wear sweatshirts ($40), or in Phy Ed they decide they want to go on a ski trip($50+)and then there is the T-shirts for the pep fest, then they were selling carnations and a note like a secret telegram for St. Patricks day ($2) but she had to send to 10 friends, it just NEVER ends!

...and monii222, my DD did the breakfast thing in middle school too, she and her friends decided one week that breakfast would be like a social meeting and needed to have breakfast while they chatted...geeesh

Most fund-raisers are for specific items...computers, PE/Gym equipment, etc. Money for those items are not in school budgets, yet most parents want updated equipment at their schools.

One way to know how the fund-raiser money is being spent is to be active in PTA/PTO groups...or at least go to the meetings occasionally. Ask for an accounting from the treasurer. It is your right!

My kids went to private schools and we went from one fund-raiser to another. My son went to a public high school but was extremely involved in the band program. There is no money in the school budgets for these types of programs...so, the parents pay for it. (I'm so glad they are now grown...LOL.)

Anyway...it's tough nowadays. I wouldn't mind paying for supplies...but I guess I'm selfish...I would hate for them all to be dumped in a communal bag for anyone's use.

My 10 year old twin daughters have been eating breakfast at home and then at school too. So now they have to take their lunch to school instead of eating hot lunch. So I can relate on that one.

It is always the same kids that bring in the supplies, the kids who dont are the ones who take advantage of the supplies. I have also noticed this for parties the same kids will bring stuff but who always asks for seconds. If your kids take in stuff it should be just for them I believe.

My son was in special ed. On top of bringing in supplies, he was bringing home a note every week requesting that he bring $5 to school with him, so he could go to the mall and learn how to order lunch.

I don't know whether it took four weeks for the kids to learn to order lunch or 4 weeks for parents to get ticked off. I know I was sick of it. Kept thinking how nice it would be if someone to give me 5 bucks so I could go to the mall and order lunch.

Wow. Well to all those who posted about their kids buying breakfast without asking (PLUS on top of that already eating breakfast at home- which is unhealthy causing obesity plus having lunch again like 2 or 3 hours later at school) maybe for those that are old enough can get a job or if they're not old enough do they have an allowance that it can be taken out of? Maybe you can give a set allowance for the week and if they go past it too bad? Than they'll have to make their own lunch or something and tough luck for them if you give them the amount they need for lunch weekly.

lol this is timely, i just sent 6.70 to school with my oldest so he can build a rocket, lmao, then when i get that check written, they tell me, "OH WE'RE TAKING CLASS PICS TODAY" another 6 bucks apiece, not sure what i'm gonna do next year when they are all in school. and they just took spring pics, THEY ARE SOOOOOO EXPENSIVE....

Has everyone forgotten how to say no?

Tell the schools/teachers that your child will only be bringing supplies to school with them for their use. They will not leave them there for everyone to use. Granted there are those who may not have but have you ever stopped to think about what happens to all the extra supplies? Most children end up sharing a couple of boxes of crayons and if you have a class of 25 kids and they want you to supply 2 boxes each, thats 50 boxes of crayons. No way is the class going through that many in a school year.

When it comes to fund raisers, before having your child participate in them, find out what they are raising the money for and when they are over, follow through to make sure the money is spent as they said it would be.

My beef on this subject is that we never get more than 2 or 3 days notice when money is due for something. For example, memory books. It was only $7, but $7 we wouldn't have until next payday, and it was due before then. Bug misses out on alot of stuff like that because our money has already been budgeted and spent when we get the notices.

What about the kids that has parents that can't or won't send stuff, should they do without because of it?????????? I do send lots of stuff for my kids, but when DD was in K. I just did not have the money to send very much. I now send in extra for those kids that don't have the needed things. It is not the childs fault!

I guess we are lucky here.. our area passed a school bond levey.. its an extra tax.. (not even enough for you to notice) and the money covers all book costs, and supplies.. we haven't had to fill a school supply list in several years.. I still buy my kids the basics, some notebooks, and pencils, but everything else is covered, infact if I didn't buy them those, they would still beable to get them at the school... I think its great.. that way everyone is taken care of... even the ones who's family may not be able to afford the stuff, or you know there are always those few parents who just don't care...
