I'm taking another trip in May. I'll be flying into Dallas, picking up a friend then driving to Little Rock for my grandmas 90th Bday. Then I'm driving down to Houston, San Antonio to see some friends and family I have there. I just want to know if there is anything I must see while I'm in Texas. I'll only have about 5 day in Texas. If any BBS'rs any in the area I could stop by and say hello

Hmmm

funny how you take for granted what's there to do until someone asks you. Then you brain freeze.

Houston...Port of Houston does a free boat tour of the Ship Channel. while it isn't the prettiest, it's pretty fun, and free

Place to take a tourist
Houston Ship Channel

Hey, we're not kidding. It sure beats the obvious, obligatory trip to The Galleria for a day of conspicuous consumption of Chanel and cheesecake. Instead, get on board the 95-foot M/V Sam Houston for a tour of the Houston Ship Channel. The air-conditioned boat takes passengers on a 90-minute tour of the Ship Channel, where the air -- contrary to what snippy neighbors may say -- smells like money. Your guests will marvel at the 50-mile-long channel lined with huge cargo vessels and sprawling industrial plants as a chatty guide boasts of the port's accomplishments. You'll also save yourself lots of cash because the tour, including refreshments, is free, courtesy of the Port of Houston and your tax dollars.

and in san antonio do the riverwalk. it's filled up mostly with chain restaurants now (used to be a lot of great local flavor full of mom & pops, but it's pretty and peaceful). the riverwalk boat tours are fairly reasonably priced too.

and the alamo, which is free, and a great piece of history.

If you like History:
San Jacinto Battleground - not in SA but close
The Alamo
The Spanish Missions

There's Fiesta Texas, a Six Flags Themepark
Sea World
Cascade Caverns
Ripley's Believe It or Not
SA Zoo
SpalashTown - In May the water might still be to chilly
The River Center
Natural Bridge Caverns - not too far away
The River Walk
Botanical Gardens

That's about all I can remember doing. We've been 5 times in just as many years and we always have a great time! Have fun, I wish I was going.

I know what you mean, I don't live there but we've been a few times in the past few years and all I can really remember doing is driving past the oil refineries and going to Galveston...maybe I need another road trip, lol.

San Jacinto Battleground, monument, and battleship texas are very cool, but can get a little steep due to admissions if you want to tour each one. I fyou pick only one of the things to do on the battlegroun, I recommend the battleship texas.

I used to to correspond with a guy who lived in Houston and he always talked about Astro World. lol I think the admission price is probably around $40 for an adult so I don't know if that is something you would be interested in or not.

astroworld is only ho hum as far as theme parks go. it's pretty small and while they have some decent coasters...IMO it's not worth their full admission price.

you can usually get tix cheaper than gate admission somewhere like kroger

The Johnson Space Center (NASA) you might find interesting....the zoo is pretty nice, too, and there are great museums around the zoo area. You might be able to catch an Astros baseball game at Minute Maid park if they are home when you are here...

I'd suggest a drive to Galveston....but since you are from CA, you'd probably just laugh at our idea of beach! :p

If you are a baseball fan, there is a Nolan Ryan museum in Alvin which is really close..........

From what I saw in our Sunday paper try the Aquarium. It has a walkway under the sharks. ( or maybe it was a small train )

No offense to anyone originally from this area but DO NOT come near ARANSAS PASS. I know we are kinda close to Houston. Come only if you like SNOWBIRDS and COLLEGE KIDS.
