I'm packing everything in the house to move. What kind of things have you learned to make it easier? Help please!!!!!

Hehehehe, do you really want to know? Seriously, I have moved so many times, and am so tired of wrapping the breakables that, I have decided, risk them, to heck with wrapping, if they break it was meant to be, if they get there in one piece, Hooray for me,lol.

1)You usually can get boxes for free at the stores(rather than buying the expensive ones from uhaul)

2) This is the perfect opportunity to do spring cleaning with your property, dust as you go, and throw away stuff you don't use, or have no use for anymore(or donate to good will or salvation army)

3)keep stuff organized, and mark every box, kitchen stuff goes in boxes marked kitchen, batroom in bathroom, ect group things like this together.

4) Try to use up as much of your can goods as possible, it is not fun having to tote can goods from one house to the next(them boogers can be awful heavy)

5) con family to help as much as you can, it is alway nicer to have more hands on the job, than just you doing the work.

6) start packing as soon as you find out you are moving, saves on hurried last minute stuff(not fun, been there done that, hate it, but then again, that is usually how I move, lol, thanks to hubby, he gets the bug to move, it is always last minute, before he tells me,lol)

This is not so much a "moving "tip as it is an "AFTER moving tip....

I recently moved cross country from NH to Mo and have learned to keep my boxes after i move. I bought good sturdy boxes and after i unpacked i stored the boxes away in case i needed them again and sure enough....... i moved across town to a bigger place and repacked them and off i went........now they are stored safely away in case i ever need them again :)

Do keep things organized and instead of buying stuff to wrap your breakables. Use items of cloth from that room. For example use towels to wrap breakables in the bath, etc. You get two things packed at one time.

HIRE SOMEONE ELSE TO MOVE YOU!!! But if that is not an option, try and contact a local Avon representative and get all of her unwanted boxes. They really do make for some great storing and moving boxes! Also check to see if anyone just moved in to a place near you and ask if you could have all of their boxes they no longer need/want.

don't take hardly anything, realy deside what you need and what you don't need. you probably don't need as much as you think you do.

don't buy any food, just eat what is all ready in your house and hopefully it'll all be gone before you leave, give away whats left to neigbors.

don't pack junk, i mean if the plastic bowls you use came from the dollar store than they are easy to replace. only pack things that have real monitary or emotional value.

have a huge moving sale and sell all this stuff, you can even sell your food if you want. i had a gigantic sale when i moved from houston to ohio. i even sold thinsg i was planning on taking just because some one was there offering cash, when you think about having to move it it suddenly looks good to sell.

make sure you find out if there is a welcome wagon in your new town, if there is they give you coupons and stuff for all the area buisnesses, some for free stuff. they may also give maps of the area and other helpfull stuff.

if you are moving for work all your moving expenses are tax deductable.

duct tape is great packaging tape

Take gallon trash bags and put them over your clothes with the tie around the hangers. That way you can just pick up each section and then rehang in the new closets. Then untie the bags and use them to put all of the paper that you used to pack your kitchen ware into the bags. That way you don't have to hunt anything down.

Flatten out your boxes as you unpack. You will have lots more room. I don't know how big the house you are moving into is, but I had the movers put all of the boxes in the garage. I took one box at a time to unpack. It was better than having packed boxes all over the house. And I felt like I was in control of the move and not the boxes.

the boxes from the liquor store are great for glasses and bric-a-brac items.

When you get to the new place ste your bed up first sheets and all. When the end of the day comes you can sleep right in your own bed and it will be all ready for you.

We moved last year and I agree with a lot of what's been posted. We got rid of lots of junk. We were waiting for our new house to be built and moved in with our daughter and SIL in the interim. (Our old house had sold). Almost everything went into storage. And even though our friends helped us move...my rule of thumb to decide if something was worth keeping..."Would I pay someone to move this?"

You would be surprised how many things ended up with a resounding "NO!"

But I have several nice sets of dishes...THAT I USE! Plus I collect depression glass and tea cup sets.

Besides the tape gun...we purchased a box of bubble wrap (about $20) and a roll of butcher paper ($16). It was definitely worth the cost. Not one item was broken!!! I didn't use newspapers because you AND your dishes/collectables end up filthy.

I also printed out labels for all the boxes which said where they were to go...i.e. Kitchen, Dining Room, Master Bath, Christopher's bedroom, etc. Our movers (friends) really appreciated knowing where the box went immediately.

I also printed up labels which said "FRAGILE".

Thanks guys, great ideas. I not only have my things to move but also my mother's and my FILs to take care of. I am moving my mother into a care home in the same city I'm moving to and my FIL died so we are going through his things to see what we need to keep--pictures and sentimental things (he kept everything of his kids)--and what we need to get rid of.

I am having a sale so maybe I can get rid of the things we don't want. The rest will go to the VETS the next day when they come to collect. Nice coincedence.

My neice sells Avon and a friend sells Mary Kay, never thought of that. I'm using newspaper and I am filthy. LOL Gallon trash bags are going on my list. I was just at the store last night darn. That's how my clothes are going, I was going to fold and pack, yuck. I think the bags will also be used for non-breakable things like baskets and such. I'm finding it impossible to put a basket into a box without it taking up the whole box.
